Performed on a brutally cold ski day!
I am always so leery of trying new ski gear. You know, once you're out there, that's what you're wearing and that's that. My husband got me these gloves for Christmas. He searched everywhere for my specific criteria: 1. mittens 2. no inside finger separators 3. no gauntlet cuff. I took them out on New Year's day when it was 2 degrees at the base, windy and snowing. I didn't even need my usual handwarmers!! I'm so impressed. They were soft and easy to grip my ski poles, cozy warm and didn't even get sweaty/soggy either, and the cuff kept the cold air from going up my sleeves. Hooray for REI Guide Mittens!
The Answer to Cold Hands in the Winter
After having these mittens lay around, I finally had a chance to wear them in the cold. An early October snowstorm with temps into the mid- 20's allowed me the chance to use these mittens. The first thing you'll notice is the plush, sift lining that makes your hands feel comfortable, but also does a good job at wicking sweat away from the fingers. The leather exterior is soft enough to wipe your nose without chafing, and allowed for good grip on surfaces. I would highly recommend these mittens for winter! They are very warm, but not warm enough for extreme cold temps. I'd say hat these are perfect for the average person doing normal outdoor activities in the winter.
Great Mittens - Just Not "Guide" Mittens
Super impressed with the quality of the REI Co-Op branded products, which are not a step down in anyway from the major outdoor gear brands. The overall design of the Guide mittens is perfect for their intended purpose. Material selection is spot on. Love the inside softness and warmth. The stitching is flawless. The nose wipe patch on the back of the glove is a nice feature. One small issue is that these are called "guide" mittens, which might make you think that they are similar to BD's top of the line professional level guide gloves. Unlike the BD Guide gloves, you are not going to use these mittens as your final line of defense against cold hands on a Mt. Rainier summit attempt. The CoOp Guide mittens offer a "walk your dog around the park on a snowy day" kind of protection. Given that the intended design addresses less severe weather conditions, they are very high quality, warm, attractive, and functional.
Looking forward to cold weather
I used the size chart guidance to measure my hand length and circumference and got a small. These fit me perfectly (ill-fitting gloves of any kind are really annoying). It’s hard to judge how warm these will be in real winter conditions, but I was just walking with my dog in 48 degree F weather and my hands got hot. The leather reinforced palm has a nice grip and grip isn’t necessarily what comes to mind for mittens, so I really like that. The lining is soft and cozy. I like the fact that the gloves come with Nikwax water proofing wax, which gives the implicit message that these are a long-term investment one should take care of, as opposed to the numerous cheaper gloves one can collect over years and rarely wear. The PrimaLoft is 55% recycled and leather is a renewable resource, so I feel like this is a more sustainable choice than many because of the material and the fact that they should be long lasting. I am looking forward to cold weather walks with my dog in these. Perhaps some snowshoeing when it is really cold, but they are likely too warm for vigorous snowshoeing.
Keeps My Ice Cold Fingers Warm
These mittens are the amazingly warm! My fingers get cold in low 50's and 40 degree temperatures and go from ice cubes to tingling/no feeling as the temps get colder. In 40 degree temps my hands were warm. In 30 temps, with a Thermasilk liner, my hands were warm. In 20 degree temps, with Smartwool liners and my hands were toasty. I've only had them a short while, but the quality seems very good. My only issue is it's a bit awkward putting on the second mitten. I'd also like them in a different color, but function over form takes priority. I'd buy them again in a heartbeat.
Cheap construction
Bought these last year and the seam connecting the cuff to the mitten ripped the second day I used them. Would have liked to return the but got distracted and was two weeks past the exchange date. Would have preferred for them just to last at least half the season. They weren’t too pricey but next pair I’ll probably get something more expensive and better made from a different store.
Superb mittens
I am an avid outdoor enthusiast from Minnesota. I’m 6’ 5”, I typically buy size XL in all gloves, and am glad I did with these. I would say these are a nicer pair of my old “choppers” that I used heavily for many years. The fit is fantastic, pretty good dexterity for a mitten, great synthetic insulation and very useful nose wiper soft leather on the thumbs. It has not been very cold yet, on my morning walks it’s been down around 15 degrees Fahrenheit, and my hands have been toasty warm. I’m excited to see how well they perform at and below zero degrees Fahrenheit. I have no doubts that they will stand up well to the harshest colds Minnesota will throw at them. I am extremely pleased with these mittens, and at under $50, you absolutely cannot go wrong with making this purchase. Thank you REI for a great product!
Gorgeous mittens
For women, size one down. My usual size is 8 or L (due to long fingers) but Medium fits fine with these. They are cozy, warm, soft, perfectly curved/shaped to mold to your hands, and the cuffs are not too tight. Excellent quality for amazing price. I wore them out in mid 20s tonight and they kept my fingers toasty.
Perfect All Around Winter Mitt
I have purchased a lot of outdoor items this year and these might just be my favorite. As a reviewer mentioned before it is a mix of old and new- the old chopper mitt with a modern update. Love wearing these- have worn them in about 8 deg F weather and they have performed well on a hour walk. Can’t wait to test them out in Fairbanks and see how they perform in the winter.
Best Ski Mittens
I have used these mittens to ski for two seasons and like them better than the Black Diamond and Hestra mittens that I used prior, even though these are 1/4 the cost. They keep my fingers and thumbs warm but not too warm, are easy to take on and off, and the elastic wrist keeps snow out. I treat the whole glove with Nikwax waterproofing twice a season, and they stay nice and dry.
