X Ultra 4 vs X Ultra 3

For those who really liked the previous X Ultra 3 GTX in mid and low, here's my experience with the X Ultra 4 incarnation. Fit is pretty much the same but perhaps a touch roomier in the toe box (a plus for me). Weight is a bit lower by 1.5 ozs. I can't tell if the uppers, outsoles, or both got lighter. The 2nd lacing hook from the top of the boot is no longer a hook but is closed like a tunnel. This is convenient because you only need to lace one hook now. But if the end of your shoelace becomes frayed, you'll have to deal with threading the lace into the tunnel (not a huge deal since it only needs to be done once). I haven't detected any difference in the way the Contragrip outsoles perform. They seem to work the same as the Ultra 3 in dry/wet conditions. The insoles are the same as the Ultra 3 (though different colorway) - they don't offer much in the way of arch support so I always swap in a 3rd-party insole since I have high arches. With laces tightened properly, foot and ankle support felt about as good as the Ultra 3 in off-camber and rock-hopping situations. This is based on three long 8+ mile day hikes and a bunch of shorter 3-4 mile hikes, all in typical SoCal sandstone/rocky trails with creek and scree field crossings. I'll give it a few more months to assess durability before stocking up on more (I always buy 2 or 3 pair once I know a boot fits). I was initially concerned about the lighter weight but it hasn't made a difference so far. Although I miss the Ultra 3 from the appearance viewpoint, at this point I'm happy with the Ultra 4's trail performance.

Had these boots for just over a year. Good fit, light weight. Went for a short hike and trip over a small stone. Didn’t fall, but plantar flexed my foot. The top fabric tore open across top of boot. Rock did not touch the top of the shoe. Solomon stated it wasn’t Covered. I’ve stumbled before & have never had a shoe rip like that, especially a hiking boot.

One season and trash

I love these shoes, they are comfortable and fit me perfectly. However after less that one year they are literally falling apart. Such a poor quality for such a big brand.

Very comfortable, just do not last.

Basically these are a trainer made to look like a walking shoe, albeit a mid. Very comfortable and lightweight, I can easily walk miles in them on general terrain. I wouldn’t expect these to do anything technical as they basically a trainer in structure with ankle support. The downside is the sole outer was worn smooth just inside 12 months and most use has been fields, far too soft. And now the toe box outer has started to spilt open left to right, material failure on both. If it wasn’t for the comfort these would be a 0-1 star. Very comfortable just not built to last which isn’t good for the price you’re paying.

Pretty fast and light but needs more durability

I got a pair of these and they helped me finish many day hikes, they did ok in both wet and dry conditions, and they feel much faster and more breathable than my other hiking boots, I would hope there was a bit more cushioning on the sole though. After using them for about 20 days, the durability is kind of letting me down, waterproofing is close to totally failing, dwr doesn’t totally worn out, the outer sole is also wearing out and loosing some small pieces which happened a bit sooner than I expected, and finally one of my shoelaces are some how close to breaking like it’s been cut half way through. Curious how I can get a replacement for the shoelaces since I have not found one on the website.

Great, but not perfect

I just finished a 20-mile day hike yesterday, and these did great! I've only had them for a month and maybe put 5 miles on them to break them in, but that proved to be enough. No blisters! Toe box was a little too small at first, but that issue went away after a few days of wear. Haven't had a chance to test the Gore-Tex feature, but I know from prior experience to trust anything Gore-Tex. My only complaint is the black tab on the outside is fairly uncomfortable and hard against the outside middle part of my foot, and there is no way to mitigate this issue since it also serves as a loop for the laces. Would I buy these again? Eeehhhhh, probably not. I think there are better boots here, but I am happy with them.

Plantar fasciitis relief

I have plantar fasciitis and this boot is the best I have found for relief. I love the wide toe box and the strong arch support, very comfortable. I love them!

First time hiker

Being a runner and having used all sort of running shoes , I found my search land on this shoe. At first I was apprehensive about the harder sole compared to big cushion running shoes I am coming from but, the grorilla grip and comparatively lighter weight in its category of shoes, this one has easily become one of my favorite shoe to grab for not just hiking and dog walks but shopping and visiting friends too. One does feel big gravels under the shoe but the tactical look is unmatched with any other hiking boot. @ 45 days of rugged use , it’s looking like it will last atleast few years . I even tried running in these and didn’t feel extra weight of them. So I recommend this for both a new as well as an experienced hiker.

I will buy them again.

I hike a lot, have for years. Bought the X Ultras for a winter in the Sonoran Desert, doing 7-10 mile treks daily. After about 250 miles, my opinion: The most long-trek comfortable, nimble, secure, run-like-a-goat hikers I've found. They're wonderful. They feel just as good at mile 8 as they do at mile 1. Small footprint - no huge-boot feel at all, more like a runner - but great grip on every surface, stable on all slopes. Only downside is the durability of the bottoms. After 250 miles, (during which I completely avoided concrete and asphalt), they've eroded down to almost-flat. But that's just the other side of "soft enough to grip everything."

Great boots so far but…

I love these boots. They come in wide width which I needed and they fit live a glove. I have only had them for a month and, so far, I haven’t had any problems. But, when I was changing out my laces for the lacey system I noticed a couple of areas on the shoe that look like they may be a point of failure later. It’s where the front part of the upper connects with the shoe’s collar. Sorry, I don’t know the anatomy of a shoe. The pictures I’ve attached show what I’m talking about. I’m not saying that these will fail here but time will tell. If/until then, I’ll enjoy wearing these.

Great style

They are water proof, true to size and looks great but comfortable as compare to speedcross 5. Not enough cushion, i like to take long walks but they aren't good enough. And I won't recommend for winters as well.
