The Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX is by far the best pair of hiking shoes I ever own. I have to give it 5 stars although the sizing is a bit weird. I wear 6.5 for Nike, NB, Vans, Asics, etc but I bought 5.5 for this pair, as many previous reviews said the size was big. Size 5.5 fits really well for me as I have long and narrow feet. The shoes are very lightweight, have a strong grip, and have great support for my ankles. Believe it or not, I did not break in these shoes. I bought them in June 2021 and they arrived a few days before the summer trips. I wore them for back-to-back hiking in Utah and Colorado. I also like the waterproof feature.
I bought these in hopes that they would last and perform as well as the X Ultra 3 - which lasted me a good two years through 250+ km of trails in the mountains. Unfortunately, these lasted about a month out of the box before the seams fell apart and opened up completely around the toe box. An additional month in and the "lugs" were flattened to the point where the sole was smooth at the front of the shoe. This is very unsafe especially when in the middle of a hike where traction is actually needed. Otherwise, the lugs actually fell off and it began to feature negative lugs. Absolutely would recommend if you would like to try hiking in flats masquerading as hikers or if you like your feet to be air conditioned during your hike.
I have been wearing Salomon XUltra hiking boots for years and they rarely disappoint. These 4’s get 5 stars and are my favorite pair so far. However, I did not find that they ran large and had to return my first pair because I downsized as recommended on the site. I re-ordered and purchased my regular Salomon (and sneaker) size. I love them so much I bought another pair immediately in case Solomon decides to change the style/fit which they tend to do. Even after my weekly 12-14 mile hikes over rocky terrain my feet never get hot spots, blisters, or get wet. I especially love the generous toe bed. Right out of the box I’m ready to hit the trails with no break-in. These boots are little work horses that also happen to be quite stylish. Brawn & beauty works for me!
I wanted to love these boots! The boot hurts the top of my foot, near the bottom laces, upon flexing with every step. The REI person thought the boot was too small even though they run large. They are the experts so ordered a 1/2 size bigger and still have the same problem. Its a very stiff material. I cant imagine hiking in these.
I’m absolutely obsessed with these shoes. I’ve worn many different brands of shoes and my feet have killed me after long hikes. Many have rubbed blisters on my feet making the rest of the hike unbearable. There was so breaking in period with these at all. I’ll definitely be buying the low tops.
I bought these boots to prepare for the Half Dome hike with the cables at Yosemite. I broke in these boots enough to feel confident I’m for the day long hike. During the break in, I noticed that the hook eyelets sometimes were a nuisance. But it appeared to be a minor problem that I brushed off. Big mistake. I hiked Half Dome and through out the hike I continued to notice how the hook eyelets really didn’t allow me to keep the laces as tight as I’d like around my ankles. I also hit the hook eyelets a few times while merely walking. Then during the upward climb on cables, when I was quite tired, I somehow hit the hook eyelet and the shoe lace came off. I was petrified and shaking. Someone who was coming down on the cables offered to tie my shoe. I owe that person so much! Overall, the hook eyelet is not in the proper position. I’ve never had this problem with other high top boots with similar hook eyelet. The placement posed a safety risk for me and I would not recommend these boots to anyone.
I am a dog walker and HATE having wet feet so I bought these for the winter months. They were warm and truly waterproof. Super comfy and treads were great for anti slipping and wear and tear. Honestly, I only buy Salomon after trying very different brand of shoes. I walk about 20km a day and Salomon’s are the only ones that stand up to that distance and actually last. Their soles are what make them stand out as they will last and not wear down: I was going through other brands that would only last 2 months before the soles were done: So happy with these and every other Salomon I’ve purchased so far. Definitely a must have for dog walkers!
I’d been after some lightweight mid-height walking boots for a while. Nothing too heavy but with additional ankle support. After a great experience with some Salomon Millstreams I thought these might do the trick and I’m pleased to say that I wasn’t wrong. They’re comfortable from the off (probably thanks to the cloud-like Ortholite insole) and I didn’t find there was any breaking in time required. They also kept my feet dry whilst submerged in water at the beach. Contrary to some other reviews, I’d say my usual size was just right. I wear them with normal everyday thickness socks and found them to fit perfectly (I would agree though that they run fairly warm, so probably wouldn’t wear them with thick socks unless in winter). There is ample room in the toe box as others have described (I’m personally a huge fan of that) but most importantly there’s no movement in the ankle/heel resulting in happy feet with no blisters. The ankle support is great too and just what I needed. Thanks Salomon. I am a die hard fan and will keep returning all the time you’re producing amazing footwear like this.
My original pair were amazing. I bought them and then immediately went on a 6hr walk and the comfort was incredible. I hardly felt I was wearing boots. On the back of this this, I'd worn them to death so I decided to purchase the same ones again. Unfortuntately this time the fit was not as good. The hard edging dug into my toe joints and I had to endure this for a 7mile trek across the Seven Sisters. Now I'm hoping that they will eventually settle BUT the main purpose to purchase was the original pair had not needed any time to feel fabulous. Such a shame as they cost a lot of money. I think the fabric or design has been altered.

Boots were easy to break in and were wonderful for majority of the Half Dome hike. Toe box protection and ankle support was absolutely perfect on the hike. But while going up the cables my laces came undone because I nicked my lace off the metal hook at the top. A kind soul tied my shoes who was passing me going the other direction. If it wasn’t for him, I think I would have had to nervously scramble up the cables with an untied shoe. I’m tempted to get a hammer and push the metal clasps closed a bit more so this doesn’t happen again.
