I live in California, but I bought this jacket for a trip to New York - and it handled both climates really well. In California, it might be a bit overkill during the day, but at night when temps drop, it's actually perfect. Super comfortable, lightweight, and totally weatherproof. In New York, it was exactly what I needed. The GORE-TEX keeps you dry and blocks wind like a champ. It breathes well so I never felt sweaty walking around the city. The fit is roomy enough for layering, and I liked that it didn't feel bulky or stiff. Feels durable and looks sharp. I'd definitely bring it on future trips or keep it around for cooler evenings here at home.

Bought this jacket to replace an old NF jacket I had for about 20 years(!). I'm sure this new jacket will be great once I get out in the winter months and start using it, but only giving 3.5-4 stars right now because I'm questioning the sizing. I typically wear a Large (5'10, 195 lbs), but I tried both Large and Medium. I was drowning in the Large - it was 4-6" too long and I would have had to roll the sleeves over to fit. The Medium fits, but is about 1" too short, and the sleeve length feels too long. Is there a "Medium-and-a-half"? Bottom line, I wish it was more comfortable, but once I'm on the slopes, I'm sure it will be great...and I hope to keep it as long as I did my last NF jacket.
Jacket, is beautiful, lost for words. Would I recommend yes. Simple but amazing. Worth every penny in my eyes, light weight but stiff if that makes sense, thank you northface for another great peace
It truly is windproof i was in a bit of a windstorm and it definitely held up not to mention its extremely stylish and comfortable
This in my opinion the best jacket TNF has put out. I have a retro 1994 Mountain Light Jacket, 1990 Mountain Jacket which is the same as the one this jacket replaced due to a warrantee issue. This jacket is basically the same design with some improvements like a better reversable front zipper, button down front flap has a water gutter now, way better hood adjustments and it's lighter in weight but still has a tougher outer shell than other TNF jackets. Also still has the zip in jacket or vest ability. It's rapidly becoming my favorite jacket.
Stunning jacket, beautifully made. I was put off by other reviews regarding the high pockets as that often result is a weird unsightly and uncomfortable bulge, but in this case the pocket goes deep so no midriff bulge and the placement makes it easier to access, the two interior zipper pockets are also excellent and rest at the lowest bottom part of the jacket. the material is heavy, the red/black color makes one very visible and the craftsmanship makes the high price tag fully worth it.
This jacket has impressed me on every front. It's reliable, durable, and comfortable, with excellent weather protection for a variety of outdoor activities. Whether you're facing down a snowstorm or braving a rainy day, this jacket will keep you dry and comfortable. Yes, it's an investment, but for anyone who spends time outdoors and wants something that will perform at a high level, it's absolutely worth the price. I can see this jacket lasting me for many years, no matter the adventure.
Great jacket, almost as good as the original. New Medium size is the same cut as my (now faded) ‘93/‘94 vintage Large size (that one got retired to snowblower duty years ago). The new design is missing the external & internal chest zipper’d pockets (very useful & why only 4 stars) as well as the powder skirt (less useful). Otherwise, it’s a solid piece, regardless if you’re “of a certain age” and replacing an OG version or just wanting to rock your first classic Mountain Jacket.
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! I had my previous Gore-Tex Mountain Jacket from North Face for 25 years and now have reduced it to wearing it while doing yard work. It is still in good shape ( only a few holes and tears), but I wanted something that felt new again. I worked that old coat to death, washed it 1000 times and he really held up. I ordered a couple of competitive brands while deciding on a new coat, and sent them all back other than The North Face. I LOVE THIS COAT!!!
