Sizing Notes

Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.

SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.

TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.

Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.

Inseam is measured to the floor.

To give some background, I have used several different hiking pants from different brands. My most common use case for this style of pants is hiking, backpacking, and traveling. For this review I’ll cover the aspects that matter most to me for this style of pants. Breathability: My biggest challenge for hiking pants has always been that my legs easily get hot and sweaty. I often like to hike in shorts because of this. These pants feel cool to the touch and seem to be the most breathable pants I have ever tried, which means I can try to wear them in warmer weather. For this review, I wore the pants on a hike and a couple of runs, but only in cold weather. I won’t get to test them out in warm weather for a few months. Comfort: The pants overall feel comfortable to move around in and are not tight in any areas. Most pants are usually tightest in my thigh area and these are not. They also have a mild amount of stretch. I do like the drawstring you can tie behind the zipper. I was able to wear these pants without a belt by just using the drawstring. Protection and Durability: The biggest reason I wear pants when it’s not cold is for protection from sun, bugs, and rocks and brush. The fabric is on the thinner side, so I’m not sure how they will hold up to hard use. They do seem tough enough to block mosquito bites, which is a main reason for me to wear pants during warm summer weather. Fit and Style: To me, this category is the biggest shortcoming for these pants. For reference, I got the 32W X 30L size. I normally have a 32” waist and a 28-29” inseam and weigh about 150 lbs. The 30” length seems about right for these pants, which means they are long on me. The 32” waist is a little bit wide with some extra room. I think the pants are too baggy and my wife did not like how they look on me. The cargo pocket zipper is also very obvious and seems to be a style choice that was made for these pants. I am not crazy about this zipper but I could see some people liking how it looks. Summary: I think these pants are good for active situations in warm weather where I want to wear pants instead of shorts. The breathability is the best quality to these pants because my legs are prone to get very hot and sweaty in warm weather. The pants are also too baggy for my taste, and I think they are better suited for trail use as opposed to town or travel use. To me, the best use case for these pants is in warm weather when I want extra protection than shorts can offer from the sun, mosquitos, or rocks and brush.

For the Tall Ladies

For my fellow tall ladies - I tried the women's regular version of the pants on and they were great but more like capri's than pants so I went online to order them in the tall size and found out they discontinued the tall sizes?!?! My dad jokingly said I should just order men's pants, and that is exactly what I did! I ordered 3 different waist sizes because I was unsure how the sizing would differ (I ordered a 28, 30 and 32 all with 34 length) and I ended up going with the 32 waist x 34 length because it fits with and without my long underwear underneath (I usually wear a women's 8 or 29). I now have a great pair of hiking pants with real POCKETS that are long enough for my legs and don't look like highwaters on me - the only way they would be better is if they were just a half inch longer. If you have as much of an issue finding tall women's hiking pants I would highly suggest trying some of the men's pants.

Durable, light weight, and comfortable!

Wonderful pair of pants! I highly recommend getting these for hiking and camping. I do most of my outdoor exploring in Ohio, so these make for fantastic summer hiking pants. They're lose and comfortable, and keep mosquitoes and ticks off my legs, as well as protecting me from getting scratched up in the brush. They also keep me fairly cool. Overall, the construction of the pants seems very durable and lightweight. They have a drawstring inside, belt loops, and a good old fashioned button and zipper. Would recommend to a friend.

changed manufacturing facilities?

Just bought my 5th pair of these pants in 32x30 because the previous model were legitimately some of the best value pants I’ve ever bought. Trim but not slim, lightweight, dried faster than any other pants I’ve owned… But these are not those pants. The pair I got had loose threads sticking out of them in six separate places, and the fit is blocky and awkward, like they took the longer lengths and just shortened the legs instead of having a different template for shorter lengths. All around, the build quality is just abysmal comparatively, and I wouldn’t want to buy the pair I received for 50% off, much less $70. I’ll be returning these.

Good Pants, Flimsy Mesh Pockets

These are good, simple, lightweight pants. I wanted nylon instead of polyester and without external cargo pockets. They're similar to adventure pants which were discontinued years ago. Those had a zipper on one of the back pockets to secure a wallet and sturdy pockets all around. These do not. I like pants for hiking as well as travel and my big complaint with these and some other REI pants/shorts are the mesh pockets. If you plan to put anything in your pockets other than a protein bar expect the mesh to fail long before the pants are worn out. Bummer!

Ideal hiking pants

I bought these before a trip to Iceland that included 4 days hiking the 34 mile Laugavegur Trail. The weather, temperature, elevation, and terrain varied widely each day of the hike and these pants were comfortable in all conditions, whether I was wearing down and Gore-tex jackets across snowfields or a t-shirt in sunny sections. The pants I wore on Day 1 slipped down constantly while wearing a pack up & down steep parts of the trail; switching to these on Days 2-4 eliminated the problem due to the drawstring that kept them in place at all times. They dry quickly and are extremely lightweight at 9.5 oz in my size. Best hiking pants I've ever owned.

Pretty good but some key misses.

I really like the overall cut, weight and layout of these pants but there are some key misses in the design. Firstly, the belt loops are absurdly small for hiking pants and I can't get most standard 1.5" belts through them. This a critical miss, especially for those of us that like to carry a belt knife or similar while hiking. The drawstring is also weird but I'm hesitant to remove it given that I can't get most belts to work with the pants. Lastly, I wish the pockets were a bit more robust. If they'd just beef up the pockets and fix the belt loops, these would be a 4 or 5 for lightweight hiking pants in my book.

Women's Trailmade has more features!

The Good: The pants are very comfortable. I find the fabric to be very breathable on hot hikes. The side pocket is useful. I think the other pockets are deep enough. I'm glad they added the draw cord, because they skip waist sizes. The Bad: Today I was folding my wife's pair of trailmade pants and found that she has pull-cords on her leg bottoms and an elastic waste! We were hiking in from a back country hike yesterday and I had my pair rolled up to my knees to keep cool. Of course the rolls would fall down every once and a while. These pull-ties would have been so useful!! My big gripe now is...I paid the same for my pair as hers and received less product?

My every day, go-to pant

These pants are outstanding! As a Phoenix dweller for the kast year, I wanted a light, sun protetive pant I could wear year round --- from office to trail, without the goof y zip/look of convertible pants. These pants check every box. The fit is outstanding for my large 6'3" 225 frame (40x34), and the crotch gusset is a bonus to the overall fit. They don't "swish" when you walk, and they have really held up well in the wash. REI hit it out of the park with this pant. As a self -described minimalist, these pants replace seveal other pants in my closet (and shorts too). They are my daily go-to pant.

all purpose pants

I'm going on a trip to Italy and the surrounding area this summer and I need a pair of pants that can do it all: very lightweight and won't take up a lot of room in my pack, breathable and won't make me hot, rugged enough for trail hiking, casual enough for walking around town, dressy enough for visiting churches and such (long shorts or pants are required), formal enough for an evening out. So far all my testing indicates that these pants are a win across the board. If I could change anything, it would be nice if the zipper for the zipper-pocket was a light gray instead of dark black. This would allow the pants to go completely undetected as hiking pants, in formal settings.

great summer pants (p.s. black *is* black)

After years of wearing shorts from May to October, I've switched to long pants in order to put the kibosh on mosquitos, scratches and random itches. I sleep better at night! These pants totally fit the bill: super-light, comfortable, and pretty good-looking. I wear them all the time, for every activity, and since they're just a tad stretchy and cut close to the leg--not form-fitting but not a lot of flapping material, either--they're great for mountain-biking. "Black" in the product photos looks more like gray, but I can attest that it *is* black in real life.
