Trail-Running Shoes Buying Guide

Where do you plan to run?

Light trail: Best for well-groomed trails
Rugged trail: Work on a wide variety of terrain, including technical trails
Off trail: A more aggressive design protects you on rocky, extremely variable terrain

Cushion comes down to “feel” vs. “float”

Minimal and barefoot cushioning: little to no padding, more ground feel
Moderate cushioning: more traditional ride
Maximum cushioning: softest, bounciest ride

Check the heel-to-toe drop

Barefoot and minimalist shoes are very flat with 0-4 mm drop. Moderate and maximalist shoes have higher drop. Choose what you're used to.

Consider the fit

Don't assume you know your size—go to your local REI or running-shoe store to get a fit assessment. Happy running!

I love this shoes so much it’s my 3rd pair of different colors it’s very comfortable and great support my only wish is they should offer in more colors like blue shades

Ive ran in peregrines for years but I find they just don’t have enough cushion for my 60+ km races as after around 50-60 km my feet really start to feel it. I decided to try these out in the Canadian Death Race last weekend and wore them for the last 60/118 km. They were great! My feet felt good all the way to the end. They performed well on various types of terrain from steep rocky ascents and descents, to wet single track and the final stretch of gravel and concrete road.

Great traction and fit perfectly. However I bought this because it was said to be good on all surfaces. In my opinion it stinks on actual roads. It gripped fine but there’s zero cushion. I’m older with a bum knee but l walk/jog on different surfaces. My favorite it the Triumph 22, but it lacks speed- I’ve been searching for a Saucony with speed and cushion and decided after many strike outs to try a different route- not my jam.

I returned the shoe because I felt like I couldn’t feel the ground underneath my feet. It was roomy enough in the toe bed, but it made my step feel sloppy. There was too much cushion on the bottom of the shoe so it’s not good for what I wanted, which was trail walking/running. I did love the color!

At first, I LOVED these shoes. Absorbs a lot of impact. About 2-3 weeks after wearing them 4-5 days/ week (about 4 miles each day) they started squeaking! It is beyond annoying especially when running on a paved road in the woods. Totally bummed.

I absolutely love these shoes. The shoe is very supportive, and with this particular Saucony shoe when I step in low rain on the ground it does not seep through the shoe. I would definitely recommend this style of Saucony shoes.

These shoes are comfortable, but I had to return them because they caused me to roll my ankle on the right shoe. It could be my foot rather than the shoe, but I was nervous hiking in them after that happened.

I have been a regular customer of the Xodus model and these, the Xodus 3 are the best yet! The toe box is a little bit wider which I need, and the style this time is the most beautiful one I have had, too

Great trail shoes! Very similar to HOKA Speedgoats. They are super comfy and bouncy and I feel very fast whenever the trail leads to pavement. We’ll see how they hold up on mountain rocks!
