Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I bought these Waterproof sneakers for double-duty wear....wet, muddy trails, and as my new replacement golf kicks. Surprisingly, this pair of Altra's with a roomy toebox offer great traction and stability on the golf course and range So far, feet have remained dry in wet, dewy, and moderately puddled conditions. Relatively easy to clean although the light color will darken after one clean. The shoe's interior stays dry after rinsing the shoe's with running water on the shoe's exterior in order to remove mud and debris after 18 holes. Haven't tested them much on rough, rugged, and soaked trails, but I would imagine the Waterproof would hold up.
I bought these shoes for the Camino Portuguese from Porto to Santiago (~160 miles), which I just finished. It was my sixth Camino and my fifth pair of Astra shoes. On sunny days the GTXs are hotter than the Olympus 5s, on rainy days they are just as wet inside. If all you're doing is stepping in puddles on a short walk to the bus, the GTXs will fit the bill. But if you're walking for hours in steady rain the Gortex holds back the water for a while but once the socks get wet, the feet get wet. That said, for keeping occasional water out the GTXs are better than the 5s, My biggest concern with these shoes is they squeak - badly. The squeeks in both shoes started one wet day and have continued ever since regardless of the dampness (or lack thereof) of the shoes or the walking surface. For a while I thought it was the Sole insoles I was using. Changed back to the OEM insoles and squeaks continued. It's loud enough that my walking companions could hear me coming. For me, the squeak is a deal breaker. My four year old Lone Peak 4s are worn out but never sounded like this. Because of the squeak, I am taking them back to REI to exchange for something else. All up, I love Altra shoes. I wouldn't walk long distances in anything else, but because of the really annoying squeak, I think I may go back to the Olympus 5s and save the price difference.
Just came back from completing the Tour Du Mont Blanc! A 100 mile hiking trek through the mountains of France, Italy and Switzerland. Super comfortable, no blisters and the water proof helped a ton through many water crossings. Definitely would recommend!
If you are new (like me) to zero/low drop shoes, be prepared for sore legs the first week as you stretch. So far I have hiked, paraglided, lounged, and done office work in these shoes. I don't even think about them, and at the end of the day my feel still feel great.
The width is great, allows my foot to move without cramping. This is important to mitigate pain that can develop in my metatarsal area. This still allows me to lock down my foot comfortably with maximum support including the heal. Highly recommended.
I live in Alaska, and its wet--almost every day, either from dew or rain, and its muddy. I am very hard on these shoes, and they have held up incredibly well after months of abuse. I do wax them also.
My first pair of Altra's and I, (along with my feet), could not be any happier. About 50 miles in on this pair, ZERO complaints. Definitely buying a fresh pair before my AT attempt next year. 10/10!
I like these shoes. Cushy just like the Olympus Trail Runners but waterproof. Only issue is the right shoe squeaks. It does it on all surfaces. Guess I'm not sneaking up on anyone .
I wear these every day as a work shoe, and got the Gore-Tex for waterproof. I hate wet feet. Everything is great about these shoes...and highly recommend.
