Spacious, versatile, functional and fashionable
Opinions about handbags, totes, purses, etc. are very specifically personal and you really can't tell another person if they'll like a bag or not. What I can say is that there are a lot of things I like about this bag and just a few I don't (the biggest one really being more about preference/nature of the design rather than quality or design flaws). I really wanted it to be an everyday bag, which for some people it could be, but for me it will likely remain a travel bag and for that purpose I'm quite happy with it. I have my personal pros and cons, as outlined below, but overall I think the bag is well worth its cost given its versatility, security and perceived (in my use over a couple of weeks) quality – and it’s eco-friendly and looks lovely! What I like: - Material/durability: The material seems durable and is water resistant. It seems the type of material that won’t hold/show dirt and grime immediately; I chose black and it shows no signs of being well used after a few weeks, which is 1) important and 2) impressive. I would guess the lighter colors may show use a little faster and more obviously, but the black is great for avoiding that. - Security: I can’t say for sure that the RFID blocking material works as I don’t know if anyone has tried to hack me, but it seems the standard construction for such a thing. There is indeed an extra lining on the bottom that is slash proof and it doesn’t seem to interfere with the functionality, weight, etc of the bag. The exterior zippers are said to lock, and technically they do, but it’s enough of a hassle (one is a loop lock and one is a clip) that one most likely won’t use them all the time; however the zippers do seem “tight” enough that they will stay in place, so unless you are concerned about theft there probably isn’t an issue. Two features I have not come across before that I quite like are the attached chair lock loop and the find me tag. There is an actual loop made of cable lock cord that is attached to the side of the purse (removable by clip for when you don’t want it hanging around, but it’s also got a handy elastic loop to tuck it into so it’s not just flapping all over the place!) that you can use to secure to a chair or table leg or something else you may be sitting near so that when you’re eating, imbibing or what have you, someone can’t just casually walk by and grab it! No more wrestling straps that can be cut or pulled off easily. Very cool. The find me tag is just like a little dog tag on one of the zippers that has a QR code whereby you can be contacted if your bag is found – by someone scrupulous . It takes just a moment to activate – simply scan the QR code (or enter web address and enter tag id) and it will take you to activation where you enter your contact information. That’s it. The code can be scanned by someone who finds your item and they can obtain your contact information to return it. - Ecological impact: the entire bag is made from reclaimed, recycled or upcycled fabrics. Really cool. Ocean bound plastics, “ghost nets,” and billboards from Asia make up all the parts that are not hardware. The inner lining from reclaimed nylon billboards is particularly fun. - Functionality: it’s kind of like 4 bags in one. 1) smaller sized cross body/shoulder bag; 2: smaller size hand bag; 3) larger cross body/shoulder bag; 4) larger hand bag. There are two different straps – each removable – one is a hand bag style strap (short) and one is a longer, but adjustable, strap like a standard purse/bag, which can be long enough to be cross body, or adjusted to be just a shoulder strap for people of pretty much any size it would seem. The bag itself is quite large, but can be essentially folded in half and has a clip to keep the folded material down. It’s really quite versatile – you can use it for just the essentials (wallet, phone, keys, etc) folded down, or you can keep it unfolded and it can be a pretty much full day pack for all sorts of activities (beach, horseback, etc) where you want to bring water, sunscreen, bug spray, and things of the like that take up more space. When used as a full size bag it is rather spacious. These options are probably my favorite feature of the bag, but also contribute to a bit of my dislike, as the fold down method is somewhat cumbersome (see things I don’t like). Inside the bag there are 2 pockets without zippers that will hold smaller items (even fit my iPhone 12 Pro) and one small zippered pocket – these are great for internal organization, without going too overboard as some bags do. There are 2 pockets on the outside of the bag (one is not really external if you’re using it folded down, as it’s covered by the folded down material) and both have zippers and a relatively fair amount of space for things. What I don’t like: - Locking zippers: A pro and a con, the locks on the zippers are somewhat inconvenient, but that is just the nature of security I suppose. Each zipper head has a long piece of heavier duty fabric on the end which is meant to slide through a loop at the end of the zipper. I’m actually not seeing such a loop on the main compartment zipper, but there is a clip lock there, so that’s fine. The clip lock is just a good measure to make sure your zipper doesn’t come undone resulting in contents spilling all over. If using the bag as a full bag (see functionality description) there is one additional external zipper, which has neither a clip nor a loop for locking. It is a small pocket though so likely not an issue and this one is covered if using the bag as the handbag/half size. - Find me tag: Also a pro/con; just as likely, maybe more, as someone finding your lost or stolen item and getting your contact info to return it, the find me tag could just as easily be used to get your contact information for less appropriate purposes. The tag comes on the outside of the bag, but it is attached by a removable key ring so it could be moved to the inside of the bag (that way it doesn’t eventually get lost too), but if your bag really is lost and someone honest finds it, they may not go snooping inside and accidentally find it. - 4 bags in 1: just as the versatility is really cool, it’s also not; I mean you really can’t have everything, this is just a really good effort and I honestly can’t offer any input on how it could be changed – it’s the nature of trying to have all the options (and some people may not even have issues where I do). It sounds contradictory to my earlier statement, but the thing is when you have a very large bag that you’re trying to use as a small bag, you’ve got a lot of extra space/material that, even though isn’t used, is taking up space. For example, I decided to use the bag as a small purse for a meet up in town and I found that just having my wallet, phone and keys in the bag left me folding and unfolding, clipping and un-clipping, and digging deep for what I was trying to access. It’s just the nature of having the options really, it’s not a design malfunction or anything like that. Just something to be aware of – that if you want to use it as a smaller bag, you are still “digging” through a lot of space to get to things (the bag is deep!). Overall, I still like the options and it does work well as a smaller bag; just know that it’s pretty floppy if it’s not very full and you could find yourself swimming no matter how much you’ve packed in – little to lots.
Purse like sling bag - a traveler’s friend!
Pretty cool bag for everyday errands! I have several slings and daybags that I use for errands, travel, etc. I’m always on the lookout for a good one that best meets my needs at the moment. Right now, I typically carry a Steam Deck, a book, some pens, and a grocery bag. This works great! I have done three road trips with this bag - one where I was in and out of shops, one where I spent a lot of time on transit, and one where I was just hanging out at a coffee shop. Given I didn’t need to carry a lot, this was great. It didn’t dig into my shoulders, it was easy to adjust and stay adjusted, and it had just the right number of pockets to separate items. I was really worried that the long unpadded shoulder strap would hurt after a couple hours with the weight but it didn’t. I loved the grab handle on the bag too. Since I had my Steam Deck on me most of the time, I really liked that the bag was still super functional and easy to get into. I did find it easier to get into the bag once it was full rather than mostly empty with small wallet and keys and grocery bag (the folded over look) but enjoyed carrying it both ways. I haven’t used the built in anti-theft features but I suppose if I every need them that will be a plus. The material is really nice. I got caught in drizzle and snow a few times and it did fine. The zippers are smooth which is a definite plus. I’d really prefer the top zipper to be better attached though - the gap it has is both unsightly and is what makes it harder to get into the bag when it is less full. I love the light colored and recycled inside! It makes for easily finding things. Compared to my Mountainsmith TLS Day, this carries less but is better distributed on the body. Compared to my Chrome Kadet (regular size), they hold about the same just in a different arrangement. If you’re more about the sling life, both work but if you are looking for more rugged the Kadet is better. If you’re aiming for sleek, this one is better. If you are looking for a purse replacement, this is it. If you’re not a purse carrier (which I definitely am not), this will feel like a purse so just be aware. I’m looking forward to using this on my next trip this weekend!
Fiddly, but flexible for urban adventures
I really wanted to love this bag, but it's a little too fiddly to become a daily carry for me. However, when I do international trips, I'll probably bring this as my purse. Pros: This bag is surprisingly big. If you're out sightseeing, this would hold a water bottle, some souvenirs, your wallet and phone, etc. It can start as a small bag (folded over), and then become more like a tote. Similarly, if you want to carry a sketchbook or notebook around, this will hold a them, easily, with space to spare. But overall, I just find it too fiddly to want to use it frequently. Cons: The bag doesn't have the firm structure that it appears to have in the product photos. It flops around, but not in a cool, slouchy tote sort of way. I didn't realize the closure (to make it the smaller size) is a hook sort of method. I really wish it had a hidden magnetic closure so that I could just flip the flap over and have it close. Also, the loop (of the hook and loop closure) gets in the way of the top zipper. A good quarter of the time when I was opening or closing it, the zipper would get stuck against the loop, and I'd have to adjust my angle to use the zipper. Really poor design to have that stiff loop right against the zipper run! Speaking of zippers, the zipper locks are nice, but I find the one next to the Return Me tag is a pain to open and close. I'm not sure what I'd keep in that pocket that I want to protect, but not access easily. The things I most want to protect--my wallet and my phone--are also the things I want to access the most. And the ring from the Return Me tag get in the way too. Poor placement there, although at least it's a removable key ring, so I can move it somewhere else. I also don't know how often I'd use the cable to attach it to a chair. The few times I tried to use it, I found the cable very springy, and the lobster clasp a little small. When I opened the lobster clasp, the cable once flew several feet away. Other times, I had to be very careful about looking closely to make sure I could cram both loops into the clasp area. I get that these safety features are supposed to make this theft resistant, but I can't imagine trying to manage this in a busy, crowded area. And if you have any arthritis or grip issues, I'm not sure these clasps would work well for you. Overall: This bag has its place, but it could be be better designed. It's plain enough to carry without drawing attention to yourself, and it's flexible enough to be a good "going out for the day and might buy things and will need to carry them" bag. But it's a bit over-engineered, and that makes it hard to use.
Amazing little bag
This is a beautifully made bag. I adore it and the other two Sherpani products I purchased. It is, like other reviewers have noted, more of a travel bag than a purse since it’s very focused on security. When using it as a foldover, the clasp to close it isn’t meant for quick access. However there are two outside pockets for such items. Just be mindful the main compartment is intended to be more secure. When carried upright, my one concern is the part of the clasp that’s attached to the bag (for use fastening the top flap when carried the other way) just sort of hangs there and has no function; it sticks out in an awkward way from the clean line of the bag. I may end up removing it and replacing it with a magnetic closure since I do adore the rest of the features. I’ll carry it as an around the town bag on my next trip and will probably pack inside my overhead Bellroy backpack. My larger Sojourn bag will be my personal item, carried tote style. For overnight trips, I’ll carry this one as a crossbody and use my Sojourn in backpack mode. Psyched! Thanks REI for the great product and price!
Impressive design, appearance, and safety features
I was very pleasantly surprised with this Sherpani crossbody bag! I originally thought it would be best used in less safe places (maybe during overseas travel, or in less safe areas of the US), but I'm finding that this bag has become my everyday purse! Some really great positives: -security features like the claw-shaped hook that latches the purse closed; the lobster clasp that attaches to the main zipper pull to prevent it from being easily unzipped; the cut-resistant piece of coated wire that can be used to clip the bag onto a chair leg (loop around chair leg and clip both ends of the wire onto a lobster clasp on the bag; the tag/tiny keychain thet hooks onto the bag and has a QR code on it so someone who finds your lost bag can report it found I like that using these safety measures is optional. For example, you dont have to secure the rear zipper pull under the stretchy piece of material that keeps the pull taut to the bag. But, it's there if you need it. Other positives unrelated to safety: -Nice color combo -Very lightweight - Holds a lot of belongings -Cool Asian pattern liners of the interior pockets -Bag is upcycled The only negative, in my opinion, has to do with the claw clasp on the front (it attaches the folded over top of the bag to the main section of the bag). It's hard to describe, but essentially the bag needs to be more full of stuff than I have been putting in there in order for the clasp to have enough tension. Without being pulled upwards by a larger amount of personal items, the clasp hangs a bit. I find this unappealing visually, but the hang also doesnt keep the clasp's tensiok sufficient enough for the clasp to secure the bag closed. The idea is to make the bag hard to easily open by a stranger, so you need good tension on that clasp. Overall, super happy with this crossbody!! Highly recommended. It's great for all seasons, all locations of the globe, and doesn't hurt your shoulder, either.
Perfect for travel
This bag has a lot of room, which is great for when I am traveling. It easily fit my wallet, sunglass case, tablet, a book and small accessories, with plenty of room to spare. I can definitely see how convenient it will be while traveling because it is small enough to fit under an airplane seat, yet large enough to carry the essentials on the plane, plus snacks or small purchases. There are so many pockets! One of the exterior ones even has a locking loop so it is harder for someone to open it without one noticing. I like how it can easily be worn as a cross body or as a shoulder bag. It's nice to have the option to fold down the bag and securely latch it when I don't need to carry as many items or make the bag larger when I need full capacity for shopping trips. It is too big to use as my every day purse, but the perfect size for traveling. The chair lock loop adds extra security when out and about. The multiple key rings are great, because I am constantly digging in my bag for my keys. This will be my go-to travel bag from now on.
I've never had a bag with so many features!
I've never felt like I needed to read the instructions for a bag before, but with so many features I wanted to make sure I understood all of the cool things this bag could do. As a remote worker, I think I would love to put my MacBook Air into the bag with my water bottle, snacks, wallet, and all of the random things I have accumulated, and then go work from a coffee shop. It has an ID chip in case the bag is lost for it to be tracked, it is RFID protected, locking zippers, and a chair lock loop (basically you can secure the loop around a chair or table legs to prevent someone from taking the bag). Tons of security features, and I really appreciate the sustainability and thought that went into the design of the bag. The straps are very adjustable and I loved the convenience of a small front pocket for quick grab items (wallet, keys). The downside of this bag is that while I'm a fan of pockets and I like having a design that allows me to throw stuff into a bigger pocket, I found myself losing items in there more than my usual purse; I was rooting around at the bottom of it at the store for almost a minute to find a pen. Even using the designated slots/spots for items near the top it was tricky to find without opening the bag in its entirety and reaching around inside. I found that I am usually doing more item searching with my hands based off of muscle memory instead of opening the bag to get something out. It's also almost too flimsy, so it needs to hang on a hook instead of sitting flat on its own. Overall, I loved how much stuff I could fit inside with ease. I loved that there were so many pocket options and the style was the type I prefer (cross-body, hands-free!). However, the many security features aren't needed for what I am usually doing in my day-to-day, but for trips to the coffee ship or taking a plane ride, this would fit the bill!
Versatile bag!
Very versatile bag for any activities. It expands or collapses depending on how much space you need with different shoulder strap options. The inside has pockets to put your phone for easier organization. The green color is a more neutral color than in the pictures so easy to coordinate colors. Very well made bag from recycled materials with water resistant exterior and easy to clean. There is also a lock for the bag, RFID, and locator tag that you can sign up for. I can see using this bag for many many years.
Great, versatile bag!
Overall I think this is a nice bag! It has pockets inside and out, and the strap is very sturdy! My only complaint is the material is not as thick as I thought it would be. That doesn’t mean the bag isn’t usable by any means, it’s just different than expected. Very handy and will be making its way on a lot of trips in the future.
Off to Spain!
Just bought this for Spain trip for traveling. I’m going to use it everyday until we leave. It’s lightweight & has a ton of pockets which I love😍🙏🏼🙌🏼!
