Tough and functional carry-on alternative!
I really like the versatility of this bag. You can easily stow the straps, and carry/load it by the top or side handles. I took it on a few trips, and was easily able to fit the same amount of clothes/shoes in it as I would my usual carry-on suitcase (see review photos). The material is tough but easy to wipe down if you’re traveling somewhere with a lot of dirt. There are lots of pockets to stash your gear, and the zips are sturdy and seem waterproof. I took it out in the rain on one trip and nothing inside got wet. That said, the only con for me was that the main zips are stiff and can be hard to open/close, especially without two hands. I imagine this will get better with use and time, though. Great color, comfortable to wear as a backpack and fit everything I needed for a week easily with room to spare!
A NEW BACKPACK TRAVEL BAG THAT MY HUSBAND CLAIMED!
The Osprey travel bag is well made and more in the vein of carry on luggage, perfect if you fly a lot (we don't) My husband grabbed this bag though because he is an avid HAM radio operator and likes to do portable contacts in the woods and local state parks. This bag is perfect for that as he can fit EVERYTHING he needs into it (before he was leaving items behind)It fits him well and is a comfortable carry, he did notice issues when you try to zip the main compartment open while the bag is empty, tight in the zipper curves, they work fine when the bag is full. The accessory straps also need to be open when zipping. He also likes the fact that the straps are removeable and the bag stows like luggage in house so his radio equipment is always ready to go. We agree that this is a quality product. WE received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for an honest review
Comfortable but Needs Breaking-in
This product was provided by REI for review purposes. Archeon 40 arrived just as I was packing to move, so I was excited and had high expectations, especially seeing this as a replacement for my Fairview 40, which I didn’t enjoy using. First impressions was the comfort. When empty, this is easily on of the most comfortable backpacks I’ve tried, despite its size and weight! I thought I was putting on my old Kelty Zyp 38. The well padded shoulder straps travels on the internal frames, and offer some adjustability, but the zipper opening to the “shoulder strap compartment” is small , making it difficult to use. And moving to the storage, the frustration began. The waterproof zippers, together with very water resistant outer materials, were difficult to use at first, especially with so many curves to navigate, but nothing to grab on to. They really need to be broken in, and have finger loop on the zippers. And then the attachment straps got in the path of the zippers. Thankfully they are removable… I did not find them useful. They are not compression straps like Fairview/Farpoint. The volume inside is decent but again, as with Fairview/Farpoint, the thick padding separating laptop main components and its overall shape took away some useful space. But rest assured the laptop will be protected. I transported 2 laptops and a keyboard without any issue. Side bottle pockets are part of the side compartment, behind side flaps. One of the two side compartments has another zipper that provides access to the main compartment, which alleviates the need to manipulate main zippers. Best used when it is free of water bottle. After a few days, main zipper’s operation became smoother. though I do appreciate the overall waterproofing and comfort, I found it difficult to reward it five stars during initial use.
Excellent Overnight Travel Bag
The Osprey Archeon 40 Backpack is an outstanding choice for any business traveler, avid adventurer or casual hiker looking for a reliable and versatile pack. The backpack's build quality really stands out. It's made from high-quality weather resistant materials, and the robust fabric can withstand rough handling and adverse weather conditions, ensuring that your gear stays protected. The pack itself weighs a steady 5lbs. but once l had it loaded up I didn't really feel any tension or weight on my shoulders, the pack was very comfortable and I was able to easily navigate my way through the airport. I will note the main compartment zippers can be tough to pull up or down but I feel this will break in over time. In terms of functionality, I was able to pack a suit, dress shoes, workout and sleep clothes along with a change of clothes for travel the next day, including toiletries. On top of that it has room for my laptop, tablet and Yeti water bottle. I really liked the top-loading main compartment as it was spacious and easy to access, while the multiple pockets, including a front shove-it pocket and side stretch pockets, offer plenty of organization options. Being able to remove the hip belt made this pack more functional for my business trip, but I can easily add it back and make it ready for my next hike. Overall, the Osprey Archeon 40 Backpack is a top-notch investment for anyone in need of a flexible, dependable and comfortable pack. Its combination of durability, thoughtful design, and versatility makes it a standout choice in the world of backpacks. I Highly recommended this pack to all my travel warriors and hiking friends, especially if they are looking for a one size fits all backpack solution to support multiple uses and needs.
Nice weekend bag
The Osprey Archeon 40L is an excellent bag for those trips where a backpack isnt quite enough but you do not reslly want to lug a suitcase around. I took mine on a trip recently, holding my work gear (3 laptops and charger), clothing and toilotries for a 4 day weekend without having to overstuff the bag or bring a second bag. Because it can hold so much it can get heavy on your back. Luckily this backpack has fullblown, padded hip strips that you would expect to find on a hiking backpack. These help easily distribute the weight. The downside is that these hip straps are not the most professional looking. While the rest of the backpack would fit in in a more formal business setting, I probably wouldnt go any further than business casual because of some of the more utilitarian features on it. The fabric is really nice looking and appears to be water resistant. There are waterproof zippers to further help keep everything dry. Inside the bad there are some well thought out pockets. The laptop pocket easily can fit 3 laptops with the padded partitions separating the laptops from each other. The main pocket has some velcro and zipper pockets and a large storage area that is well suited for clothing. There is a top pocket for small items that require easy access such as phones or wallets. The water bottle/side pockets are internal on this bag, which may be irritating to some, but these pockets do provide some extra storage for toiletries. One small feature that I wish was added was a longer zipper on the main pocket. For a weekend bag I really prefer one that i can open up completely to access items that are stored toward the bottom. The zipper on the archeon only allows for access to the top, so if your socks are on the bottom you will need to do some digging. Overall I think this would be best suited as a weekend bag for trips where a normal backpack is too small but not quite enough to warrant the suitcase. It will fit a lot of clothing, laptops and other things that you may need for a weekend trip with some nice hip straps to support the weight and nice water resistance to help keep your possessions dry in the rain. This bag is a bit too big and utilitarian for many office settings, but if you are routingly bringing a lot of bulky items to work it may be sufficient. I also would not recommend this bag for hiking. There are better, more utilitarian and more cost effective options out there from Osprey and other brands. This bag looks better than a backpacking pack while offering 80% of the utility.
Sleek and stylish pack great for on-the-go travel
The Osprey Archeon 40 is a sleek and stylish backpack. The main inner compartment has two smaller pockets and a larger one for storage that would be located under any clothing. The part that folds out to reveal the inside has a small pocket on the outside perfect for storing items you want quick access to like a battery pack, phone charger, etc. There are two large zippered side pockets on the outside with elastic great for storing a water bottle. My 60 oz bottle fits with plenty of room for extra storage of small items. There is also a compartment between the back and the main compartment that is perfect for laptops or large tablets. New and unused the zippers seemed to be quite stiff, but they will likely lose some of that stiffness with more use.
Wonderful Carry-On Travel Backpack
The Archeon 40 backpack is the perfect size for a carry-on and long weekend pack. It can also be used for a day pack or overnight bag, especially for camping, if you have a lot of things you need to bring along. The coating on the backpack is very useful for rainy days or the dew in the morning after an overnight camping trip. The outer zippers are a little harder to zip and unzip but it's good protection from water or accidentally opening. There are a number of little storage compartments with zipper or velcro closures for easy organizing. It's very handy for traveling with a laptop or tablet with the designated compartment for easy access and protection. I personally like the side stash pockets that can fit a water bottle and prevent my water bottle from falling out and getting dents. It's nice you can hide the backpack straps and hip belt for more compact storage. Overall, a great carry-on travel backpack!
Sleek functional travel backpack
This is a wonderful travel backpack. There are several compartments, including a huge compartment for a water bottle that easily fits a 1.5L Nalgene. The laptop compartment is big enough for my bulkier-than-desired clunker of a laptop, plus accessories. The waist belt is removable and can be worn by itself as a waist pack with two compartments. The backpack looks sleek and the main interior compartment is very spacious.
Very nice ... but not perfect
I wanted to wait as long as I could to review this bag. I travel a lot for work and pleasure and wanted to give this a good number of trips before I wrote the review. This is about 2 months in and 2 international trips, 3 domestic return flights and 2 one week car trips. The good: This seems very waterproof no issues with leaks and I feel that the way the laptop sleeve is designed that would be the last place to get water on the very heaviest mutli day rain falls (why do you have your laptop?) IT is very comfortable to carry and travel with. The straps and the carry handle are very strong and comfortable (Osprey!!) I love the hipbelt pockets and option to remove. IT is very clean for Smaller airlines with the hipbelt removed. I have not added any of the oter packs to the hipbelt, so I can't speak to that. The modular waterbottle pockets and side pockets I actually like, I think it makes this pack into a very handy travel pack. The look is very sleek and unassuming. The not so good: As has been stated the zippers will drive you a bit crazy. They really tend to stick when fully packed. Right on the top corners it really slows down when zipping and every time I'm paranoid I've gotten my jacket or sweater that is in the bag, stuck in the zipper. I believe what makes these zippers excellent is also what hinders them. They are very waterproof but they shouldn't be made to turn in such a tight radius. The gear attachment straps can also hinder the zipper experience but they will also slow any would be thieves and are handy when utilized. I'm still torn on the internal organization. I'm more of a cube kind of guy. I like the small pockets for little things but I just feel like the big internal pocket on the bottom when fully stuffed doesn't compress fully taking up more room thatn needed. It also sits directly on your computer and tablet when carrying both so It always makes me feel like i've lost a lot of room when I stuff that pocket. Overall I think this is a very good bag, probably a 4.5 if I could but I'm going with a 4 star review.
Likely to be my new go-to travel backpack
I have not yet had the opportunity to take this pack on a plane but did take it on a week-long road trip and found it to be functional and comfortable. I generally exclusively travel with a backpack regardless of trip length and was excited to try this pack out. Initial thoughts are that it is very well constructed and feels durable. The external fabric is water-resistant and seems like it will hold up to air travel and scrapes without risk of tearing. However, the fabric and zippers are quite stiff during initial use. I imagine they will soften over time, but I found myself frequently struggling to open and close the main compartment which could cause issues for some. The pack has a ton of compartments and storage which is fantastic for organization. The main body is somewhat large and I will likely use packing cubes for longer trips to keep things organized, but the design of the front zipper is great in that you can either open it up fully or leave it partly closed for top loading. I LOVE that this bag has water bottle holders and that each of the exterior components can be zipped away as needed, making it less likely that something will be damaged if the bag needs to be checked or stowed. Overall I find this bag far more structured and comfortable than other travel backpacks I have tried, making it a great option for anyone who anticipates needing to walk a ways with their luggage. It fits comfortably on my back as an average-sized woman without feeling that it is dwarfing my frame or throwing off my balance. The load lifters are effective at keeping weight off the shoulders. I would not recommend it for hiking, but it strikes a great balance between structure and function for air or ground travel. It fits a good deal of stuff and appears to be a great carry-on size. Very excited to use this on upcoming planned trips!
