Truly Waterproof Rain Jacket/Shell For Layering
Andrew

I used this product almost a dozen times in the weeks following it arriving, on hikes and nature walks as a single layer jacket, as well as in combination with a sweatshirt while being out in fully exposed heavy rain. I am located in Northern California. The jacket is definitely waterproof, and has all the standard adjustable options you would expect for personalizing the fit to your body, like the cinching cord around the waist & the sides of the hood, the velcro on the wrists and the back of the hood, the latter of which helps with sizing the hood to the depth of your head. I took the opportunity to test this jacket in two hours of straight downpour rain while at work, and there was absolutely no leaking or soak through on my inner clothing. I personally don’t like the size of the jacket, but I am very firmly between a Medium and Large size; I typically wear L shirts and M jackets, for reference. This product being reviewed is a L jacket, and I have a lot of extra room in the body and some length on the sleeves. One other note is the jacket is purely a rain jacket, so it doesn’t provide much warmth if you decide to just wear a shirt underneath. This part makes me believe that the reasoning for it being larger is so that you may be able to make any jacket/sweatshirt combinatio0n waterproof. Overall a solid jacket and you’ll be paying for the waterproof and sturdy quality from REI Co-op brand.

Poor Quality; Not Made to Last

Within 6 months of owning this jacket (used regulary- I live in a rainy climate) the inside white liner began to peel off leaving white flakes in my hair and on my clothes. When I attempted to return it (slightly over one year after purchase as I live out of the country) I was told by REI that these jackets are only meant to last for 1-2 years and the waterproof liner is "painted" on. Planned obsolence at its' finest. I thought this jacket was the perfect packable jacket, but now I am left with a piece of trash that will contaminate the planet.

Perfect for any trip (wind or rain)

This was a last minute purchase before our 4 week vacation in Italy and Greece. Thinking I would need something for wind and rain and that was light for traveling, this jacket seem to fit the bill. Easy to fold and pack in my bag. It worked well when I was on the ferry in Lake Como, as it helped to block the wind a bit that day. The arm vents allow for great circulation. The best part was when we were in Milan, we had a major rain storm and this jacket was perfect. It deflected the rain and did not absorb. The hood has a velcro to adjust the depth, so my head was not buried inside. I could see side to side, which was helpful when crossing the busy streets. Well worth the investment. And it dries quickly.

Excellent Lightweight Rain Jacket

I received my new Ranier Rain Jacket just as two huge, cold storms rolled through the Bay Area. I'm an avid hiker /walker and wore the jacket through 3 days of heavy rain storms. I was initially impressed by how light the jacket was, and was a little concerned as to how it would hold up. This turned out not to be a problem! The jacket (I got a large) fit well and easily covered several underlayers. I like the underarm vents which provided good air flow without water intrusion, and while every other part of me was soaked everything under the jacket was dry. The hood is good sized but I think works best when wearing a hat. I also packed this jacket for a day trip; in addition to being lightweight it folds into a very small space. I would definitely recommend this as a daily lightweight rain jacket.

Starting pouring as I was waiting to pay

I was in need of a thin waterproof jacket as my current one was looking ragged. Has a 15% coupon in my inbox about to expire so I stopped by REI on the way home from work and found the Rainier to fit all my needs. As I was waiting to pay, it started pouring outside. If that isn't a sign from above that I made the right choice, I don't know what is! I had the cashier snip off the tag and I wore the jacket to my car, about 100 meters away. Really liked the fit and really appreciated the armpit openings which will come in very handy when I wear this while cycling. Very nice product that doesn't scream RAINCOAT.

REI Rainier rain jacket

My last raincoat literally disintegrated so happy to get this jacket for review. Positives for me is the light weight of 11.3 oz, windproof reportedly up to 50 mph, waterproof with the base 2.5 layer, recycled ripstop nylon, pit zips for ventilation. I also like the Velcro interrupted patches that are in the front of the jacket for those times you just want to use that instead of fully zipping up. Finally the fact that it’s packable is also great. The main negative for me was the sizing. I’m normally a medium and this was very large for me. Luckily you can adjust the cuffs and the hood, otherwise I would be flapping in the breeze. I would definitely size down unless you’d like things feeling loose or wear multiple layers underneath.

The rubberized inner lining does not last.

The inner lining of the jacket falls apart. I've only worn this a few times, since it doesn't rain much in So. Cal. I have worn it to keep myself dry while traveling on my boat and that's it. After my last fishing trip, I noticed white flecks on my wrists after I removed the jacket. I had no idea where it came from until I looked on the inside of my jacket sleeve. I'm staying away from REI ranger from now on. I had my rain pants go through the same problem with the lining. And this issue is not covered under warranty. Bad product.

First jacket that fits!

This is an excellent rain jacket. I am 6 foot 4 inches tall and this is the first jacket that has ever fit like normal! There are a few features I really like: Waterproofness: I wore this jacket in a rain storm and I never once got wet under the jacket. The hood has a little flap near my forehead that kept water from dripping in my face. The sleeves were long enough to keep water off my arms (hard for a tall person). And the overall jacket length is perfect for a tall person. Material: The waterproof material is great! But I the other materials make this jacket great. The pockets are made from different fabric than the rest of the jacket. It’s a more comfortable pocket to put my hands in. The chin area near the top of the zipper has a soft fabric liner on it so when the jacket is zipped all the way up, there’s no skin irritation. Small Details: The zipper pulls are made from paracord or climbing rope material like other REI products which make for a nice touch. As mentioned before, the fabric in the pockets and chin area is comfortable. The Velcro holds strong but isn’t rough on the skin. It’s small details like this that make me enjoy wearing it! Sizing: As a tall person, the jacket fit very well! I’m tall and thin, and the jacket has enough room in it to wear another layer or two under it if I was in a colder area. The hood was large enough to cover my hoodie under the rain jacket. Overall, this is well made jacket that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a rain layer. Bonus, it folds up into the pocket for easy transport!

good water resistance & breathability great price

Overall a very good rain jacket for backpacking/hiking or just wearing around town/shoveling snow, at a reasonable price. I've been in a couple of downpours in the white mountains of NH (a memorable storm in the late fall with freezing rain and snow near the top of Mt Washington) and it performed well; no rain penetration, and a good job of breathing through the jacket and the pit zips. It does not have a breast pocket, but all the important features - zippered pockets, pit zips, hood synchs and adjustment, good front zipper with snaps at the top and bottom and velcro in between - seem well thought out and reasonably roubust. Hope it holds up over time.

Wet Through first time wearing

When shopping for a new rain jacket I compared this one against similar jackets from North Face and Patagonia and decided this was a good fit for me and had several features that I liked. However, on my recent trip to Quetico, the first time wearing it in the rain, the jacket's outer layer wet through in many locations. Fortunately the inner layers kept the rain from getting all the way through but I was very disappointed in its performance. It's almost like the DWR layer wasn't applied or wasn't applied evenly. Maybe I just got a defective product but I certainly expected a lot more for what this jacket cost. I will be returning it and start looking for a new jacket.

Useless as a ran jacket.

I'm not sure how this qualifies as a rain jacket. I wore it in the shadow of a waterfall and after 15 minutes of being misted on portions of the jacket were saturated. Zero wicking. It's a glorified wind-breaker at best. They don't make rain shells like they used to. I'm going to try to return it.
