Missing webbing/straps
Well for one, this is just barely bigger than the MLC Patagonia which is far better and has a coating for extra waterproofness and durability. It gets shipped inside out and stuffed in it's own internal stuff sack. I had to poke the zipper out of the tiny pocket and nurse the zipper out further to fully open and use some force to unpack it. the MLC is nearly the same design but has excessive sorting pockets and layers to it. As well as a compartment to stuff your shoulder straps into while traveling and easily remove to reconnect. This one doesn't have that so it is mostly good for just the back of your vehicle if not carried by you. Finally, the shoulder strap buckle is missing webbing to connect the bag to the shoulder straps. Which isn't that big of a deal because you can just use the hand straps. Lastly. either the hand or the shoulder straps do not have a chest strap. The MLC has several tiny loops on the shoulder straps that have a little VERY secured clip on each that buckles for the chest strap. The tiny loops can place the chest strap higher or lower depending on body size. They also act to attach carabiners or clips for gear etc. or even threading cables. The Black Hole has NONE of these which is ridiculous. It is the most basic of duffels. Though durable and up to those standards for Patagonia. It is far far below standard when compared to the MLC design. What is a bit nifty is that the top is a bit of a cap that will act like a pad when worn as a back pack. I bought this to take an overnight train trip. I was hoping it was a bit larger and it will just be barely enough room for what I need (pillow and blanket in a compression sack) and personal items. This "may" fit in a larger overhead bin in a plane if not over filled. Like I said it is just a little bigger in dimensions of the MLC, If you can cut a few L's out then get that one. If you need this or larger for actual packing, best to go with an internal frame pack.
Outstanding week getaway bag!
Need a bag for going away for a week with light gear and clothes. This is the perfect duffel. Carry on the plane very easy. Carries on back very easy. Not too heavy fully loaded and carries a lot of gear. My go to bag for week long journeys.
Needs a Shoulder Strap
I’ve used the bag a few times on trips to the Grand Canyon, Salt Lake City, and Hawaii. I checked the bag at the airport and was curious to see how it held up. I’m happy to report that when it came down the chute in the baggage claim, it was unscathed. It’s a tough and rugged bag. I like the large wide open space inside. In fact, I prefer it over travel packs with blocked off sections because when I have just one large open space to play with, it allows me to organize and configure things the way I want. If I want more organization, then I can always add some packing cubes inside to keep items separate from each other. There’s just one thing I wish it had. A shoulder strap. If it had that, then this review would be a full 5-star review. But as of now, without the shoulder strap, I’m going to give this bag a 4.5
Good bag, but inconvenient to use.
Good bag, but too many inconveniences. The 55L is large, sturdy, and was easy to wear on the back. The shoulder straps tighten up nice. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I did not think a shoulder strap (for slinging over the shoulder, not wearing on the back) was necessary. If it had one, I would not have used it. I prefered wearing it on the back. Cons: 1. When the shoulder straps are in place, unzipping the bag is cumbersome because you have to reach under the straps to unzip. When the handles are closed together, that makes unzipping nearly impossible. (See attached image. The orange X marks show the starting and ending points of the zipper. The straps make it near impossible to unzip in a single pulling motion. 2. The shoulder straps are easy to tighten while wearing the duffel on your back. However, loosening them while the duffel is on your back is difficult if the bag is full, because the bag's weight pulls the straps taut, making it diffucult to lift-pull the loosening mechanism. Those are the only drawbacks, but the inconvenience they caused was enough to prompt me to return the bag.
Spacious and durable!
I got this bag for a trip to the Seychelles where my checked bag was limited to 33 lbs for two weeks. I'm an over packer that will fill a bag to the fullest, so my typical large suitcase would have been a challenge to get under weight. My husband has an old version of the 70L that would have still been too big for me (it's basically a full sized suitcase) so the 55L was perfect, especially with some packing cubes. This bag is great for me, I plan to primarily use this bag for long trips where it will be checked and there is a benefit to having a duffel bag over a wheeled suitcase. I like the water resistance it offers and expect to keep this bag for many years. I find the strap options are good but not great, the backpack straps will take at least a couple minutes to put on or take off and it's difficult but not impossible to get inside the bag with them on. I wish this process was faster and this is the only reason I rated it 4/5 stars. I do agree that a shoulder strap would be a nice addition, but I don't think this makes or breaks the bag. Please note, this should not be replacing a proper travel backpack. The backpack straps are perfect for those in-between moments when traveling, like walking to a train or boarding a ferry where you want your hands free. I don't think you will have a good experience wearing this for many hours at a time, especially while doing a strenuous activity.
Very nice duffle just needs a shoulder strap!
It’s a great bag and just the size I was looking for! I am however surprised it doesn’t have a shoulder strap my fault for not checking. It does have straps to use as a backpack but I think it’s a little too big for that for me. The construction of the bag is fantastic!
Black hole is the “you only buy once” bag
The bag was roomy and could fit a lot of items. I returned it to buy a different color as the light blue looked like it would get dirty easy. The bag folds into one of its pockets for easy storage. Folding it back in is very challenging. The backpack straps are detachable. This is a very convenient feature as they won’t get tangled if you check in the bag.
Best travel bag, especially as Carry on
This bag is perfect for traveling, it passes for carry on bag If you wear it as a backpack. It fits A lot of stuff when using packing cubes. It durable. We have used this as our main bag for Greece trip and for Ski trip to Montana, we carried them on for both trips, it fits perfect in overhead bin. It's so funny to see people travel with roller bags now when you can have this! We only travel with blackhole Patagonia bags. We have two if these in our home.
Great bag for boat travel
This was a gift for our daughter in law but we also have two of them. We bought them for boating and they’re perfect! 55L holds a lot of stuff!
Patagonia vs North Face
This bag is great ! I have 2 North Face duffles . What makes the Patagonia duffle so much better are the back pack straps that actually work and stay in the adjusted position . The North Face back pack straps on the duffle do not hold and slip out of adjustment very easy and are basically unusable . If I had to give one small negative mark on the Patagonia , it’s that I don’t love how when you use the back pack straps you either have the buttoned together carry handle against your back , or you can have the carry handles unbuttoned , but then they are snag-able loops hanging at your sides . Still a great duffle bag , and if you’re choosing between the North Face or Patagonia I recommend the Patagonia .
