This is my 4th Garmin Edge, I started with the 800 then 810 830 now 840. The feature I appreciate the most is the ability to upgrade and transfer settings from my previous Edge to to my new edge computer. The reason I upgrade is because I wanted the daily suggested workout feature. So far it is exactly what I wanted.
Awesome device 840
I am a first time owner of the any Garmin product and I love this little thing. Very user friendly, love the touch screen, solar powered, so much info and now I never leave my house without it.
Thank you for posting a review we appreciate it!
Huge range of features, but too complex
Huge range of features that can be customized in many ways, so if those are your priorities this could be the right product for you. I felt that a lot of the features were targeted at top athletes, not everyday riders like me, and in fact I didn’t even understand what some of the data meant. But the main reason I couldn’t get comfortable with the unit was the non-intuitive menu structure and obscure methods for accessing and changing different fields. Also the speed reading seemed to fluctuate wildly when riding in areas where maybe the GPS reception was poor, like under trees. Eventually I returned it and bought a Wahoo Elemnt for its simplicity; it does what I need and I don’t have to spend a lot of time trying to figure it out.
Reliable great performer that will do everything
Works beautifully though you should watch Shane Miller’s YouTube video about setup when you first get it. You need to turn off several unwanted alerts out of the box. Great for navigation, clear screen, turn-by-turn directions, and tons of available data points. It starts up much faster than my old computer and immediately gets GPS lock. Speed and location is spot-on. Finally I love that it has both physical buttons and touch-screen for all functions.
Constant disconnects from the phone
Constant disconnects from the phone. Uploading a ride almost never happens automatically, you have to connect and disconnect Bluetooth, stop and restart Garmin Connect, etc. Its not the phone because an older Edge 520 Plus was rock solid with the same phone for years. It also has a music control screen, but it's useless for the same reason: when you go to that screen, it more often than not says "Phone connection required", then it takes a minute or two to finally show the song name and gives me an opportunity to skip the song (by that time the song is often over anyway). I was looking for a safe way to control my music while riding, but unfortunately it's so buggy and slow to connect so it's next to unusable.
Awkward menu layout and altimeter doesn’t work
Overall, this is a good unit. I like the amount of features that it has in the battery life. But I don’t like, is the clumsy/awkward menu layout that takes time to find things. I’ve had this edge 840 for about a month now, and still have trouble navigating certain areas. Today try to do a benefit charity ride in the rain and the altimeter stopped working a few miles in. Not the end of the world as the navigation still worked. But this seems like an issue that should have been fixed in the last version and it’s kind of frustrating when you are trying track stats and plan efforts on climbs. Wish I had known about the altimeter issue before I purchased.
Too much
So many features, so many options- most of which lead back to the Garmin store. I haven't used it long, but I'd be happy with about 1/2 of the screens and analyses available- and the ability to lock the screen on speed & heart rate, with pop-up course prompts. When you hit a significant climb, the screen shifts to a profile of the climb, and you lose the other data until you swipe a few times. It's possible to get lost here! A learning curve for sure- but mostly I'm going to have to learn to eliminate most of the features! Battery life good, touch works well, screen big enough to read the small boxes (speed& HR) that I can't seem to put in bigger boxes. Maybe if you have a power meter and like geeky stuff this is just right. Telling me how much water I consumed /should consume-Dubious!
Not Worth It
I purchased the Edge 840 to replace my Edge 810 which Garmin no longer supports (I needed a button fixed). The 840 is substantially more expensive than other Edge products out there. I’ve ridden with it on 25+ rides now and I feel it is not an upgrade over my 810. The new features are gimmicky and, when enabled, hide the data I really need to see (like power and heart rate). I will not be activating them. Other issues are glitches in the software (ride profile pages that revert to factory settings for no apparent reason) and a new type of charging cable. I now need three different cables to charge my three Garmin devices. My advice would be to save some money and look for a different product.
Returned, too complex and unreliable.
I hated this thing after four rides. Crazy complex to set up. Terrible UI Screen reflective in sunlight. Yes, on a bike computer! New functionality would come on out of nowhere while riding that I didn't want and didn't ask for. Would stop collecting data while riding or disconnect from Di2. Constantly bugging me to login to social media. Does Garmin collect and sell your data? I finally got some peace by disconnecting it and putting in my jersey back pocket while riding. I can't wait to return this thing. I will probably try the Wahoo although my Apple Watch Ultra is enough for now.
First bike computer
Easy initial sync with Garmin Connect and my existing Garmin gear (HRM, Cadence). This let me get a basic set up and get riding without much friction. First ride with a bike computer and with no custom configuration, and I had all the data that I needed (and more) available right in front of me. As a first time bike computer user, I am just scratching the surface of what this product can do and I'm already happy with my purchase. The only improvement I'd like to see is more configuration capabilities within Garmin Connect, ex. Customize profiles and screens in Garmin Connect. If this capability exists, it wasn't prominent enough in the initial onboarding.
