Great for 12-day trip

I recently took my Osprey Sojourner 46 on a 12 day trip to Europe, and found it handled everything I need for the trip and made airport, trains and buses much easier to navigate, not to mention walking my way to the hotels from the stations. So many great features, and capacity for clothes, supplies and equipment.

The Bad: The stitching started coming apart after a short (5 day) trip. The top pocket small zipper broke on the way to the airplane. The Good: It's a nice pack that lets you carry tons of stuff. It's well balanced so you can track tons of weight without an issue. Because Osprey's service is amazing it was no issue that the stitching was coming apart. They stand by their products.

Simply Amazing Travel Pack!

I’m on my first trip with this pack as I write this. On an Amtrak, heading to NYC for 5 days. I fit so much stuff inside…too much. I have all clothing, toiletry bag, sandals, shoes, jackets, hats, you name it. In the side pocket I have 2 water bottles. Attached perfectly to the back is my favorite day pack, the Osprey Syncro 12. This pack attaches perfectly as do others besides the listed compatible packs. In my attached day pack I have chargers, cords etc and 2 water bottles in the outside pockets. It’s also still a manageable size and I have it above me in the overhead compartment. I waited for a long time and a sale to get this Sojourn 46 and am beyond impressed so far. I have it packed heavy and the shoulder straps were very comfortable walking to the train station. My wife is now going to to get one of these since her generic travel pack is not working out well so far as far as size, comfort and convenience of use. Don’t hesitate to try this pack- you get what you pay for.

Effective, Well-Designed & Built Carry On

I've taken this bag to South America, SouEast Asia, Italy, France and other locals. After 2 years of schlepping through airports, walking easily over dirt and cobblestone roads while others struggle with their roller bags, I'll never go back to those. This bag is easily the most robust of all the bags I've tried. It Is TOUGH! The few times I've had to check it (on smaller airplanes), the ground crew has never been able to damage it. What sets it apart from others is (1) it's very tough material and excellent construction quality, (2) the compression "wings" that protect the front, and its very well-thought out design—umpteen pockets, extremely easy access to contents and (3) compressability that gets it down to carry-on thickness. Those are the pros. The one con I see is that this bag is designed primarily as a suitcase. Its tuck-away shoulder and hip belts are not as comfortable as those on dedicated packs. For example, I would never try to hike from town to town in Cinque Terra (it would become painful on such a hike). It fits me just fine for getting through airports, walking a few miles to my AirBnB in Florence or Venice, so no problem there (I think that's exactly what it's designed for). BUT it might not fit some smaller people. So be advised: try it with significant weight for a significant amount of time to make sure it fits. For me, this is my dream travel bag. I'm a minimalist (Rick Steves type) of traveler, so this bag has been plenty for 3-week travels. One note: I have last year's (2022) model, without the water bottle pockets (which I think are lame since they'd be subject to ground crew abuse when checked and probably not last). My water goes on my personal carry on, which rests atop the Porter bag nicely.

Incredible! Classic Osprey. The pack

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Incredible! Classic Osprey. The pack moves with you no matter how much gear you have in it. The suspension system design distributes weight evenly whether or not you pack it thoughtfully. So if you are in a hurry to catch that next flight, bus, etc. and you pack the bag quickly, it will feel the same as if you carefully organized all your gear. Not to mention unparalleled comfort. The shoulder and hip straps pack quickly and easily making security, putting the bag in the overhead compartment or simply packing your friends car to the brim, a BREEZE. The mesh pocket on the inside is great for your dirty laundry (but could be a tad bigger). The exterior straps synch down a PACKED 46L size bag to fit under *most* airplanes seats. Multiple padded handles allow you to maneuver your bag around with ease.

Fantastic travel bag

I have been using the Porter 46 for five years. It is an outstanding bag for travel. This along with a day pack is all I take when traveling. I never check a bag which is helpful when going through airports and international travel. When flying I convert the bag into a carry-on and use my daypack to carry those items I want access during a flight.

Excellent Quality and Comfort

Not my first choice BUT the best choice. I didn't like the idea of the compression flaps on the side of the pack, it just seemed like they would get in the way. In fact the straps I didn't like enabled me to compress the bag significantly enough that it passed as an international carry-on. In order to meet that criteria, the bag was not overpacked and met the 8Kilo cabin baggage weight limitation (on Turkish Airlines, I know all airlines have their own requirements). If I had been forced to check the bag, the straps can easily be tucked away to streamline into a suitcase style bag (and so the straps don't get caught on conveyor belts). I wanted a bag with a single zipper, opening suitcase style, so I could see everything upon opening the bag. The bag was tossed and shoved and schlepped, got it home and wiped it down; it looks like new and I foresee many more adventures with this pack. It fit quite comfortably on my 5'1" frame. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5, is I wish there were other color options.

Maybe the best backpack I’ve ever owned

I bought this bag years ago to carry camera gear inside of camera cubes. It worked great for that purpose but then in 2023/24 I spent 6 months traveling around Southeast Asia and Europe with just this bag. It’s held up incredibly well, fits everything I need, looks inconspicuous (I didn’t want to be carrying around an expensive/flashy looking bag), and is as comfortable as I need it to be since I am not hiking or walking tons of miles with it. Paired with a small sling that I use as a day bag I could travel for any amount of time and fit everything I need. There’s never going to be a *perfect* bag but this is as close as it can get for me.

The design, engineering, and craftsmanship

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The design, engineering, and craftsmanship are superb! I have an older Osprey 46 L that I love. I needed a side handle. So, I bought this pack which is far and away the finest pack I have ever owned. The myriad zippered pockets are all well placed and sometimes surprised me. I love how rugged this pack is. When I use it as a carry-on for buses and trains there is nothing loose to get caught. I then pull out the shoulder straps and waistband and walk away hands-free. I'm really happy that you asked me for a review. I was blown away by how perfect this pack is and did want to acknowledge that. So, thanks for giving me the perfect pack!

Purchased this for travel to Southeast Asia on a 10 day trip. Fit everything easily, compacted down, and fit overhead on multiple flights. Now my main travel luggage.
