Great backpack, just one issue
Clare
I bought this backpack just over three months ago for work and travel. I have now used it as a travel bag several times, taken it with me on hikes, and bike/train commute with it to work every day. It has held up great. Pros: - very stylish -daisy chains on the back are useful for bike helmets, climbing shoes/chalk bags - water resistant (haven’t had any issues with light rain, but haven’t taken it in downpour) - easy to travel with. I’d say you could comfortably pack for 2-3 days. I’ve packed for a week but that was a stretch The ONE con: - the handle on the top of the bag is on the wrong side of the zipper! On the older version of the bag, it was on the side closer to your back, now it’s not. This is a problem if you are standing somewhere and need to hold your bag while getting something out/putting something in, it’s really difficult and awkward. I know it seems trivial, but with commuting I’m often taking my coat off and putting it in my bag, and it’s just so awkward. Not to mention the kind of stress this design puts the zipper under. Overall, I would still recommend the bag as long as you’re not someone who would like to open your bag while standing and holding it. It’s great otherwise! I will likely keep my bag and sew on a strap on the other side myself to make it work.

Good backpack, but some design flaws.

I like the size and weight of this backpack and the compartments are great. The water bottle holders hold most sized water bottles but taller ones will flop out. It is mostly water proof, but the top pouch did just let some water in. I was in moderate rain. The reason why I am only rating it with 3 stars is that the backpack cannot be placed on the ground and sit upright when I am loading it. It topples over because the bottom is slanted. It drives me crazy that it falls off chairs or on the floor as I am loading or if I am trying to get something out. I wish this backpack had a flat bottom so that it stayed upright. It would be so much better. I am considering getting a new one and bummed that this was so expensive.

Exceeded Expectations

I recently purchased this backpack in the sale color of bright blue for a trip to Europe. The backpack exceeded my expectations- and it was on sale! It was easy to spot in a crowd over all the black other black backpacks due to the nice blue color. It fit under the airline seat as a carry on. It was a perfect size to take on excursions. It is sturdy without being too heavy with a somewhat waterproof finish. It has one large central compartment that allowed flexibility in items to carry. It also has a handy flat zip pocket in the front for paperwork or thin items and a small pocket on top for glasses or small items for quick access.

Not the Patagonia of yore...

Been looking at this bag for a while and like the simplicity, volume and materials so was excited to order. Excitement quickly went out the door within a few seconds of taking it out of the box. One of the strap keepers was not sewn in on one side so the strap just dangled and cannot be secured. Looking at it, the finishing for the strap is clean and finished but it looks like whoever sewed it just missed looping the strap around the buckle? I am disappointed that this actually made it beyond quality control since it was so obvious that the bag is non-functional as is.

Great for airplanes and much bigger than it looks

Can’t say enough good things about this pack. I use this as my personal item on planes and it’s soooo thoughtfully designed for that. I mean, just perfect for that use case. I also use it as my ‘stuff hauler’ when I ride my scooter or bike, and it can haul an amazing amount of stuff. I’ll buy groceries that fill up a decent amount of my cart, and I’ll get looks from the checkers when I start loading them into this pack - like ‘no way that’s all going to fit’… but it always does fit! One time I even loaded a whole case of wine into it with room to spare, if that helps give you an idea of how much this can carry.

Edges out the Refugio for Travel

I already have the Refugio pack from Patagonia and really like it. But it doesn't have a trolley sleeve on the back to attach it to a rolling suitcase. When I saw this one does, and that it was discounted in the beautiful Belay Blue color, I had to get it. Not only does it have the strap, the strap is oriented so the pack attaches sideways and doesn't get in the way of the suitcase handle. It should pass as a personal item if not overfilled, and has a good selection of pockets to sort smaller items. The only negative I see is that the laptop sleeve is inside the main chamber, not in a separate compartment as on the Refugio. And of course the quality of the materials and construction are hard to beat.

Terrific EDC pack.

Love this bag. I never owned the old style with the shiny material but know that a lot of people are disappointed that Patagonia moved away from it with this new, more matte material - not me however. I think it looks very grownup and has all the pockets and storage I need without looking overly technical. Love the hidden zipped front pocket and the back pickup strap is a nice added touch. Thankful that it doesn't have a waist strap too as it's not needed for a pack this size and intended use. As usual with Patagonia the built quality is top notch.

Compact and perfect for petite folks!

I can't get over how good this bag is! I'm 5'0, short torso, and I didn't even have to adjust the straps out of the bag. It feels like it was made for me. It holds A LOT and the outside pocket is probably my favorite. So far I've used it for travel, and its great as a carry on and holds a lot. I've seen the previous model and it seems like its at least 4 inches taller than this model. If you're on the fence, I suggest you get it!

Too tall for a personal item on a plane.

I bought this as a replacement for an Eddie Bauer bag I use for a personal item. While this Patagonia bag is better in that it has more structure, and a padded laptop sleeve, it's taller than I expected, and thus doesn't fit easily under the seat for airplane travel as I had hoped. It's comfortable, and sits well on my back (I am 5'3").
