Breathable but not waterproof
This jacket is very light and packable. It packs into its pocket, and the women's size large weighs 202 grams. There are no waist pockets, just the pocket on the chest to the left of the zipper. The fabric is a little stretchy and feels well-made. The hood is big enough to accommodate a helmet, but you can adjust it to stay on your head when you're not wearing one. I wore this jacket on a 20-minute jog when it was raining lightly and 40 degrees out (Fahrenheit). The shirt I wore underneath did not stay dry. My arms, shoulders, and belly were wet. My phone stayed dry in the chest pocket, and the spot underneath my phone was the driest part of me. On the bright side, the jacket was more breathable than my rain jacket; I didn't get clammy at all. If you care a lot about weight and don't need full waterproofness, you might like this jacket.
Love this jacket!
Living in rural Montana, we don't get to go to REI that often so I am not up to date with the new tech in jackets. Wow, this softshell is so lightweight and comfortable. I have a size medium and the fit is flattering without being tight. While I didn't go climbing with the jacket, I did do a winter hike. The temp was about 30 and I had a midweight zip-T under it. This jacket wouldn't be used for standing around, but I was very comfortable hiking with these 2 items on. There was a breeze on the ridge and the wind didn't affect me. I don't like anything tight around my neck, so I zipped the jacket all the way up. It was nice and loose but still blocked the wind. The hood is comfortable. I can't wait to try this snowshoeing as the back of the jacket covers my rump. I am always kicking up snow and this should help. This will definitely be a jacket I take with my on backpacking trips due to the weight, feel, and protection.
Great, just missing pockets.
I wore this shell while on an extended walk with my son on a 40°F, 98% humidity, overcast and somewhat wet day, and it did it's job well! For being a lightweight shell jacket intended to keep you dry and keep the wind out, it performed perfectly. It was a little tight, but likely because I had a thicker quarter zip, somehat bulky sweatshirt on underneath. Between the shell, the quarter zip, and a long sleeve T-shirt, my core didn't feel the wind at all. The bottom band also had a little bit of stretch, which was a pleasant surprise. I love how thin yet effective this jacket is, and the ability to stuff into a small chest pocket makes this ideal for travel. The only thing I can knock on this is the lack of pockets. There are no pockets anywhere other than the chest pocket. So if I'm wanting to carry things with me, it'll have to be in a separate light pack.
“New slim fit” is too tight at the hips.
I owned an earlier version of this jacket in size Large. It was great!!!!! I broke my arm and the ER cut the jacket off of me. I bought this newer “slim fit” version in a Large and I could barely get it zipped. It’s way too tight in the hip area. I may have to size up to an XL but then the shoulders might be too big.
Very breathable jacket
Don’t need to take clothes on and off all the time anymore during my ski tours. Would be better if there are side pockets.
Gigantic hood
Love having this jacket in my running pack as an emergency layer or for windy ridges. However, the hood is comically large. I get that this is so they're helmet compatible, but I do find that the hood splays out and exposes quite a bit of your neck when it's down (rather than standing more upright). The sleeves are also super long. Not the first BD piece I've owned with strange proportions in the women's clothing (doesn't seem to be as much an issue in the mens clothing ....)
to be seen
I bought this for backcountry skiing. I've had several layers like this in the past. I bought this because of the color, has a hood and it seems roomy; not too tight across the back. Seems to breath well when skinning uphill. I also like the length which seems a bit longer than my similar layers that I wear for biking which is good. Fits true to size although the arms may be a bit longer than a normal small size. Doesn't bother me.
Wow! Extra light and super effective, tech gear.
Great fit. I'm slightly rounder in the middle, and this garment in my normal medium fits well. The material is super light. I plan on wearing this running, as I don't climb. But will work wonders for windy and light inclement weather. I love the hood as it's ample. The pocket on the chest is its only pocket. Looking forward to getting more wear.
Thin, lightweight, breathable
I like the magician (lol) jacket from another brand, but this is much more breathable and comfortable to wear for everything from hiking/approaching and climbing. Sort of wish it had side hip pockets for more versatility, but I get the desire for a very lightweight jacket. The Piton Purple color is amazing (leans magenta).
Schoeller
This is a great jacket. Any item made with Schoeller fabric will have a great weight to warmth ratio and enough weatherproofing to handle a brisk hike in light rain. The minimal features is a plus. This a daily wear piece especially in the early morning mountains, fall and spring.
