Received free product
First time I have paid for a clothing item that was supposed to be new and unworn, but wasn't. This jacket had a used tissue (stuck together), a receipt from an Italian restaurant (in Rome, Italy, entirely in Italian and for Euros), as well as a used napkin from an ice cream store in Rome, Italy. Therefore, I did not really receive a "new" jacket, but paid the full price for a new one with trash in the pocket.

Torrentshell 3L Jacket

Just recieved the jacket today! I definitely recommend ordering a size larger if you intend to use multiple layers. I ordered an XL which is usually baggy on me with any other rain gear, base layers, T shirts, jackets, coats etc., but this was only allowing me to layer with a standard cotton Carhartt T shirt and still provide enough room for free movement, especially in the chest/ arms area. I need to be able to wear a base layer plus a light wool jacket and or a down vest, so I will be returning and ordering a XXL. The jacket itself is very well made! Will review it in the wind and rain when the XXL arrives.

This is a real waterproof jacket

Finally a real waterproof jacket, after a few disappointments with other brands. One recent failure: I bought an OR Foray Goretex jacket which was supposed to be waterproof. But when I went out in even a light-medium rain, the jacket soaked through within a few minutes. The claim of "waterproof" was a farce. I have relegated the Foray to a snow-boarding jacket where it does well. I feared a similar experience with this Patagonia Torrentshell. However, after an hour-long walk in heavy rain, I was dry. The water beads and rolls off of it. The one comment I have is that the visor did not keep out the rain as much as I would have liked and my face got wet. I tried adjusting the tension on the elastic threaded through the hood, but still, a wet face. Not a major issue, and not an unexpected result when walking in a storm.

Passes the Zipper Test ...and more

My rule of thumb regarding jackets says that the zipper quality indicates the jacket quality. Since the REI images did not show the zipper, I prepared myself for having to return it. Happily, the zipper and the jacket are both great! In the attached photo you can see fabric being held back that protects the zipper from the rain. This seems to cover a wide weather range with suitable layering.

Great Waterproof Breathable Jacket

This is the best rain jacket I have ever owned. I have rain tested it many times now, and it is has kept me absolutely dry in the worst possible conditions. It is also very breathable, especially with the pit zips open. It is reasonably light, and the fit is perfect (for me) for layering underneath. When new, the material was a bit crinkly and noisy, but that has subsided after several months of use. The material has never snagged even when hiking through dense shrubbery. When stuffed into its own storage pocket (only one pocket is double zippered) is packs down to a nice manageable size. I highly recommend this jacket.

Thank You Patagonia

This is great: a well built, simple rain jacket made with a three-layer waterproof breathable fabric from a reputable brand at an affordable price. For far too long the budget rain jackets (most of the REI models, at a glance) have used flimsier two- or two-point-five-layer fabrics with the three-layer only being found in overbuilt or overpriced models. Now you can get performance with no bells and whistles for $150, awesome. I used this jacket on a six week canoe trip in the Canadian Arctic and had no issues, worked great. Sized up from my usual Patagonia L to XL for bulkier layering.

High Quality

Worth the price, though I was able to get mine through a sale which made it extra sweet. The jacket is waterproof and after owning for 4 years with 0 additional waterproofing, the jacket still beads and sheds water like it did day 1. The fabric is really sturdy too. I scraped my head against a sharp pine branch hiking while wearing the hood and to my surprise the hood was totally fine. It’s also a great wind breaker on windy hikes to help cut the wind and keep you warm. Plus Patagonia will hook you up with their warranty so imo this jacket is worth it. Highly recommend.

Breathability is an issue

I've had this jacket for a year and a half now. It works nicely as a windbreaker, stuffs nicely in my pack for use on windy summits. The problem is with breathability while hiking. Well before I break out into a sweat there is water condensing on the inside of the jacket, even with the pit zips wide open. The problem is mitigated a bit if I leave the sleeves wide open with no mittens/gloves on so air can vent that way, but with mittens on and the sleeves snugged against them it's hopeless and my outer layer becomes soaked with condensation. Upon taking the jacket off the inside is simply wet. Can't use while mountain hiking, especially on cold winter days where you want to stay as dry as possible.

Really is a great product.

My only complaint is that the sleeves are a bit long. I had a previous Patagonia rain jacket that stopped working, and I got replacement credit, so I got this one. My biggest test was on a three day bike trip on the GAP (Greater Alleghney Passage) Trail during weather than one never wants to experience on a bike trip. Sunlight for a few seconds, bracketed by rain/sleet/snow and just otherwise miserable weather. But wearing the Torrentshell jacket kept me dry, and I could even put my camera in the pocket and keep it dry. Another Patagonia product underneath the jacket kept me warm.

So grateful to have purchased quality

I bought this raincoat, hoping it was going to truly be something that was meant to keep rain out, period. It was put to the test, when a storm came up, and stopped me for a brief time from fly fishing. There wasn’t anywhere to go, but stand next to the stream, as the rain poured down. After about an hour, the rain slowed down and I was able to do what I had intended to do. Being completely dry, made my experience all the better. Would I buy it all over again, YES

A durable run shell

A great waterproof and windproof shell. It keeps me dry while running and the pit zips offer great ventilation when I start to warm up without having to open the main front zipper.
