Bought these for my boyfriend who is a carpenter- outdoors building houses in the winter. Less than two winters in, they are severely- like SEVERELY- pilled and completely see-through. When I spend this money on a product, I expect quality. Disappointed in these
Hi Addison. Thanks for sharing your feedback on the Rho Heavyweight Bottom. We are sorry to hear that you are disappointed and that you boyfriend experienced pilling with his pair. We appreciate your comments and we will make sure to pass them to our team.
I use this product for downhill skiing under shell pants -- and love them. The fit is loose enough that I move freely and without any restriction. I feel a nice gentle hug but no real active compression. Fabric is not skin tight, but does not bag or constrict. I have found them warm enough in 15 degree f weather to 32 degree weather. (I get cold easily, but not in these.) They wick well, and I never sweat in them even when I do "up top". A 3/4-length pair might be nice for dedicated downhill skiers (to keep out of the boots), but practically speaking I have just push the pant legs above my ski boots and that has worked adequately without significant bunching (my shell has some stretch). Similarly, you can pull these up to be high enough to use with a bib and have the "waist" above the stomach/below the pecs, or they shrink down and sit at the waist when you have regular ski pants. This avoids a cold air leak around the belly and keeps you comfy. They feel as if you are wearing almost nothing. The pocket seems useless but I guess it doesn't get in the way, unless you want to use these as pajamas on a cold night (which I've thought of!).
These bottoms are basically same in every aspect as Rho AR bottoms from the last winter season, same material same cut, the only difference is the color of the fabric on the pocket, minor issue. This fleece fabric is very stretchy however these bottoms run bit tight so purchase right size. What is missing from these bottoms is 2inch cord on the zippers to make the zipping experience easier and faster. I added a piece of cord to all my bottoms
Disclaimer only used for a day. I tried these on at the Kitsilano re-opening, just on a whim while walking to the change room and was immediately impressed with the warmth and comfort! I am a huge Icebreaker customer and I swear by their base layers, but theses feel more comfortable and the waist is a “soft elastic” which greatly adds to the comfort. I will need to take these through their paces but so far phenomenal and would recommend you at least try. Also worth mentioning I was so impressed with them I had my wife try them on and it was an immediate yes for her as well. She ended up getting both the top and bottom in black and was worn immediately when we got home. Easy purchase.
Wore them for the first time today to test them. Was 20° Fahrenheit, sunny day. Wind was about 6 mph. I went for a walk and wore them as my only lower layer. Given the conditions, I found them surprisingly comfortable. Well, my legs were not warm, they were not cold either. I think this was partly due to the sun, given they got a little cooler when I was walking in the shade. Overall, they kept my legs comfortable on the walk. My intention is to use them as a base layer under my ski pants. They fit like pseudo-tights. Not too tight and not too loose. The lining is very comfortable against the skin. I have a 35 inch waist and 32 inch inseam. I chose Large which appears to be the appropriate size.
Very good extreme weather base layer. I have had mine for over a decade. Still wear them in Alberta winters. I can layer with Alpha Pants and this is often enough to ski in. They are extremely warm and not the best for high output activities. They have a little pocket on them that I have never used for any reason.
These bottoms are extremely versatile; I have worn these several times while lounging and while out active as both a base layer and a jogger. The heavyweight warm comes without having to sacrifice bulk if using as an under layer. They feel great too, and the material is comfortable and soft. I will continue to use these on very cold ski days (under my shell pants), for jogging on dry, colder days and for comfortable days around the house. Highly recommend for anyone considering these bottoms.
I have two pairs of these and I have to control myself in order to not overwear them as I literally live in these all winter. Thick and warm, they are great against the skin for cold activities without a lot of cardio and sweating, like downhill skiing, belaying or really cold days (below -10c). These things are great and then at the end of the day you can just drop your shell and wear these around all evening until bed. No need to shower and change, just lie around the house in these evening lounge pants. Highly recommended for these activities, I love mine.
I use these pants as a standalone (for trail running in cold conditions) or as a baselayer under a shell (for ski touring and ice climbing). They are quite warm but retain a good breathability for high intensity activities but I wouldn't advise to use them with temperatures over 2-3 °C. I feel they are a little too long and abundant in the legs but this is not an absolute con, while I don't understand the absence of a fly zipper which makes peeing a hassle. Personally I don't see any utility of the small pocket. Otherwise good baselayer
Have found these to be better than heavy weight merino wool. Merino wool seems to tear easily these don’t. Very warm and seems to be more wind resistant than my merino wool. Fit was to size and very comfortable. These will be my go to from here on out.
