Osprey Excellence w/a few Trade Offs
Excellent quality pack that I knew was 36L going into the purchase. Genius to make it exactly to spec' to meet airline carry on standards (only exception some budget European lines). 13 days in Europe, no checked luggage? Perfect! Fit two large, one small Thule compression packs, 2 pairs of shoes, and miscellaneous items. I thought I would lose packing ability in smaller top zip compartment (toiletries, quart bag for liquids) with the pack so stuffed, but still had surprising amount of packing ability, got it all in & was able to zip/unzip in airport to remove liquids. Even fit 1" memory foam pillow pad & few flat items in outside zip compartment. Telescope handle easy to lift & close. Was glad to have compression straps- it fit in overhead plane bins great. Wheels performed well over curbs, cobblestone-you name it. When I did wear it the Osprey comfort was 10+. No tired back? Priceless. Game changer for me to be able to zip up backpack straps when not in use. Bag has a sleek clean look as a result. Is 36L on the small side for two weeks in Europe? Yes. I just packed a small adjustable clothesline & washed a few shirts, socks etc a few times during the trip. It was a trade off that was more than worth it for me. Hey, hanging laundry just made me feel at home (when in Europe😉). This pack is acutely aware of what it has to do to not have to be checked by airlines. I could even wheel it through a packed flight isle and not bump or bother people. Would I prefer 40L? Yes, but if giving up 4L means no checked luggage with comfort & adaptability I will take it. I really studied the market before buying. Maybe they will find a way to provide 40L and wheels one day, but until then I found this to be the best convertible bag you can buy. Whatever you can't fit in it can go in your 20L personal item. I look forward to many more trips with this bag.
Good for Rolling!
I’m enjoying this pack so far. My physical therapist told me I should not carry a backpack heavier than 5 lbs while dealing with my rotator cuff issue, so I picked up this pack at the REI near the Burbank airport. It worked well rolling on the mile and half walk to the airport. I like the water bottle holders in front and storage compartments. It is larger than the personal item official size (is too long to fit under the seat horizontally), but will fit underneath in the other orientation. This would require resting your feet on top of the bag, so only reasonable if you are lucky enough to not have someone in the seat next to you.
Great for My International Travel!
I used this bag for a 3 week fall trip through Slovenia/Croatia and a spring 3week trip through Italy. It held my travel clothes, extra shoes, toiletries, hair straightener, & electric toothbrush! Easy to pull, comfortable backpack, and fits as a carryon! I’m 5’1” so would not want anything larger when I need it as a backpack!
Terrible use of space.
I don't know what the H the designers were thinking when they made this bag but the rod that is used to store the handle of the bag protrudes about 6 inches into the main pocked that you are supposed to store things in. It is an incredibly poor use of space because you lose 6 inches of valuable space for storage. They put so much emphasis on making the shoulder straps high quality that you loose the purpose of the bag all together.
Well made but too small in practice.
Stitching and fabric high quality, straps comfortable, lightweight bag, wheels work well. Unfortunately the compartment containing the collapsible handle humps into the inside space of the pack, greatly limiting the volume inside the pack available for contents. Too small for traveling in Europe.
Great purchase
I got this Fairview 36 liter for my Japan trip because I love the convenience of a backpack, but my lower back injury has been asking for wheels. It faired well, rolls beautifully and has lots of space. Wish it was a little smaller because it didn’t fit vertically in the overhead compartment, nor does it fit under the seat, which is the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. My dream bag would be a roller backpack that fits under the seat. Otherwise, it’s a great bag!
Perfect bag for efficient packers
Really researched size, weight and carry on dimensions before purchasing. It was perfect for month long trip to London, S. Africa safari and Doha. I used packing cubes, ziplocks and stuff sacks to help with organizing. 36L is for efficient packers. It is tough, great zippers, sturdy enough handle. This was the only bag I took, besides a Cotopaxi day pack that I could strap on the front. You can even slip flat items in the compartment that holds the backpack straps, like sandals and first aid kit. I sometimes used it as a backpack over rough terrain. It meets safari standards for soft sided bags. It met carry on requirements on all the airlines I used. Those front straps are handy for cinching it down and attaching things like a daypack. Choice of rolling or on your back is really nice. I’m 60 and 5’4” for reference.
Perfect for an international travel
I really love this bag. It’s been a life saver for my trip to Europe. I can roll it when the ground allows and wear it when I need to. It packs quite a bit of stuff for a carry on.
Versatile solution to travel challenges
Excellent travel solution with just one real flaw: would fit most airline carryon requirements if it measured 20 centimeters instead of 23 at the wheel base. Other than that, it’s a versatile bag for light travelers who need to save their backs.
versatile for travel
After trying to lug my roller bag through a busy NYC evening I bought this bag for a trip to the UK in the spring. I like that I can attach my day pack to it. But the outside mesh pockets are useless and they ripped on my first trip.
