Finally the perfect improvements, now its worth every penny
The farpoint finally fixed the laptop and water bottle issues, which were the two most glaring problems. The new laptop compartment is on the back of the bag and fits a 16-inch MacBook pro with a giant charging brick with no problem. The fact that the laptop carry area intrudes into the main compartment did not seem to matter but it is none removable and I was able to fit two medium and two small eagle creek packing cubes with toiletry and tech roll bags with no issues. The new carry system is vastly improved and feels 10/10 no matter how heavy I pack this bag. The new small pocket on the hip belt is great for a small wallet or chapstick. My iPhone 13 pro did not fit however in that small pocket. The new front pouch design works well for either a packable rain jacket, a smaller toiletry 1 Q bag, or even an 18 or 26-oz yeti bottle. I would recommend using a carabiner to make sure the water bottle stays in place and thankful osprey has put two attachment points right by the top of the pocket. There is a total of six attachment points so there should be no issue attaching a puffy jacket, speaker, travel pillow etc. The compression straps do a good job of not only hiding what's inside the front pocket from sight but also compressing the bag. The material the bag is made from feels even more durable than my version 2 Farpoint 55. The new quick grab top pocket is smaller vertically but it is very deep horizontally. I would recommend leaving some space in the top of the main compartment to get the full pocket volume. It really is good for small items like a phone, AirPods, sunglasses, and a passport. It does seem a bit smaller compared the farpoint 55 packable daypack quick grab pocket. Another issue is the new buckle attachment points for the daypack do not work with old daypack bags. Of course, you could still use the compression straps to attach the daypack to the back of the farpoint 40, just not the front straps. Overall I would buy this pack for the price
The only backpack you’ll ever need
Bought this bag 1 year ago for a solo backpacking trip across Europe. Since then this bag has traveled thousands of miles across continents from Boston to Budapest and back and still looks & operates like the day I bought it. Was skeptical of its ability to keep a weeks worth of clothes plus everything else you need when solo backpacking while staying at hostels yet this thing fit it all and got through several airports without ever having to check it. Even flew Easyjet with it fully packed and never had to check it (Easyjet is known for their love of upcharging for oversized bags) so it was perfect. I don’t typically write reviews but this deserved 5-10 minutes of my time to give other travelers the lowdown on this gem of a backpack. Buy it.
BEST TRAVEL BAG
I have been using this bag for 4 years now and it hasn’t disappointed me once. It has probably been to well over 25 countries with me and still looks almost new. It is the perfect size to fit everything in like a carry-on suitcase, yet travels easy on a backpack. I don’t travel anywhere in the world anymore without this pack. If you become a lightweight packer then you will never need anything bigger than this! My only complaint or annoyance is having the laptop sleeve on the outer shell of the bag, instead of on the inside of the bag closest to your back. Other than that I recommend this bag to everyone
Easy to carry, does the job
This is a comfortable bag to carry, then the straps can be put away. Note there are no frills here- like extra pockets and organization features, just one small pocket on the top and the laptop sleeve. I picked this as the max "carry on size" and couldn't help but notice that most folks on the plane had something larger. Fit easily in the overhead of a large plane. More expensive packs have all kinds of extra pockets but this works for me as I have a "personal item" carry on that takes care of the little things.
Great Pack with a few things left to do
The Farpoint 40 is a great overall travel pack. It does most everything well. I really like how adjustable the pack is and the weight seemingly disappears even without using the hip belt. My only issue is the lack of external pockets, zip or otherwise, beyond the “stuff it” pocket that doesn’t really work if the pack is full. And the small toiletries pocket is tiny and isn’t useful either if the pack is full. A great effort that is almost perfect.
Easy to travel as carryon
We have just returned from 10 days in Portugal my husband said he loved how much room there was in bag and how comfortable it was to wear. Will be taking on many more trips. Fit easily in over head on plane.
New travel pack
I received this and compared it to the one I have used for years. My old one does not have a waist strap but is very well designed. When I go on dive trips, I put quite a bit of weight in the pack and as the shoulder straps carry all of the load, they are showing weakness along with my shoulders. This pack has a great waist strap, comfortable shoulder straps, and seems to be quite well designed. Looking forward to my first trip with it the end of February.
Great backpack for anyone!!!!
I bought this bag for my spring break trip, I was able to pack enough clothes to last me 2 weeks with room to spare. I love that it has straps inside of the bag to compress the clothes and hold them in place. I probably had close to 40lbs in the bag and it didn’t feel heavy at all. Adjustable shoulder straps and waist strap distribute the weight so it feels comfortable to wear for hours at a time. I would buy this again.
Excellent Travel Pack for Flying
I took this backpack around the world on multiple aitlines, and it was flawless. The size was perfect as a carryon, and the ability to stow the straps is clutch(do this before going down the jetway). The harness system is great and the back air circulation worked in super-humid Buenos Aires. You do need packing cubes to make the most of the internal harnesses. Overall, get this if you want a great carryon pack.
Very comfortable & well const. but limited volume
I had to buy yet another carry on bag to comply with British Air size restriction for a flight to Scotland. I wanted to walk hands-free but be able to put the straps away for stowage. This pack is attractive, extremely well constructed and does exactly what it says it does. It has comfortable handles that allow you to carry it as a bag and padded straps and hip belt when it is a backpack. However, the compartment that stores the straps and distributes the load on the back takes up about 15% of the total volume. There are also no outside pockets for water bottles or misc. items that need quick access. Nor are there interior compartments to separate socks or dirty clothes. The zippers are very sturdy. Unfortunately, you pay for the heavy duty construction with some additional weight.
