Disappointed

I have to say, I'm not fond of this bag. As a 5’4” 125 lb female who was gifted it for travel use, I found it bulky and awkward. And, maybe this isn't a problem for everyone, but it is for me; it looks dorky on. I will be returning it. The framing is too rigid for it to tuck away easily. You can't hide it under a restaurant seat or something if you stop on your way to/from the airport or train. It's always just there next to you, bulky and in the way. Also, I know that it is likely designed to fit this way for the best ergonomic support and less shoulder strain, but the top of the pack comes halfway up the back of my head. I spent time adjusting it, but to wear it “properly,” this is how it sits. Even the picture on the website shows how high it goes up if you look at it on the model. Not only does that feel awkward and bothersome, especially when sitting down, but I think it also looks unflattering. Also, on a practical note, this trait makes peripheral vision and looking upward awkward. Overall, it could be suitable for some people who don't mind an unattractive, rigid travel backpack companion, making its presence known everywhere. It is durable, has good storage and strap versatility, is well made, and very comfortable regarding muscle strain. However, I am willing to sacrifice a little comfort and ergonomic support for style and subtlety if necessary. If that's not you, it's probably an excellent choice for all the reasons I just listed, and you should get it. If you care about aesthetics, it is worth knowing the things I mentioned earlier. This bag gets excellent reviews on the internet, but nobody has made these points. They are disappointing enough for me not to want to use the bag so I thought people should know.

Traveling Made Easier

Not only is it easy to carry heavy weight, everything is adjustable to your height. I managed to fit about 50lbs in the backpack and carried it off to the airport. It doesn’t even look very big, but it fits everything!! And if you have luggage compression packages from Amazon to go with it…It’s a MAJOR game changer.

Excellent quality, fits so much gear, comfortable

Used this plus the Osprey 13L Daylite pack for a 17 day trip across Costa Rica. It fits easily in the carry on overhead bins and daypack fit well under seat. First time only packing one bag, I put all the zippers to the test without any problems! Excellent quality and fits way more than I expected.

Trains, Planes and Automobiles

This backpack makes a great carry-on bag for traveling light. My husband and I spent 3+ weeks traveling through the UK and France recently. Most of our trip was spent hopping from one town to the next by train using a Global Eurail pass. Several times we had to travel by bus, especially when the storms would cause rail stoppages. This pack was a great addition for our trip. I was able to fit several days worth of clothing, toiletries, and snacks, to keep us moving until our next “stop”. The only thing I would change would be to have a larger zipped compartment on the outside. We were in many cities and trains where “security” was necessary. S-clips and combo locks were good for deterring pick pockets, but I couldn’t use the open pocket for much more than my water bottle and snacks.

Waist buckle broke during backpacking trip

This bad had just enough room for everything I needed for my 2 week backpacking trip. But halfway through, one of the pieces of the waist buckle broke. Looking at it closely, the construction of the buckle is pretty flimsy and doesn't suit its purpose. Thankfully REI allowed me to return the bag.

Perfect for carry on adventures

I need a carry on size bag for a trip I was taking and the one I has wasn't durable enough. So after some research I was looking at getting the 55L Fairview (which is just a combo of a 40L and 15L together). But I read the review that the 40L had more features than the one that comes in the combo so got that instead and purchased the 15L separately, too. It was such a great investment! The bag was the perfect size for overhead compartment (and the smaller bag fits under the seat nicely). I was able to pack everything for my adventure. The plus side was the ease of carrying both bags around. You can attach the 15L to the back or it has clips so it can hang in front of you - I did the latter mostly. Compared to other large backpacks, this one opens like a suitcase. My friends would have to take everything out of their top load bags, but I could just flip mine open and find what I needed, while leaving the rest in place.

Great International travel pack!

I bought this pack for my trip to New Zealand and Australia and I have to say I can’t wait to take on another trip. I found the relief shoulder straps so helpful for long transports and the compartments are great. I’d highly recommend, fits into the overhead carry-on too. Great buy!

great carry-on pack

I walk with a cane and wanted a carry-on pack that was well balanced, comfortable, and allowed freedom of movement for my torso and free hand while traveling; the Osprey Fairview was perfect for my needs. The 40 was well sized for my computer and 5 days of clothes. The zip away chest straps along with the side handle placements made it easy for me to stow the bag overhead unassisted. Like most Osprey products that I’ve used, every detail has been thoughtful conceived.

Lockable zippers, comfy hip belt

Superlative customer service by Porter. Haven't used the backpack IRL yet but will soon and look forward to using the hip belt, which felt great in my at-home test. Pros: lockable zippers and the fact that shoulder and hip straps can be stowed away, although I haven't figured out how to manage the straps' zippered covered when the straps are in use. Cons: ID pocket has no way to secure whatever you put in it. A single shoulder strap would be quite useful. For reference, I am 5'3", 105 lbs, and this pack fits well.

Great Travel Pack...but...

I bought the Osprey Fairview 40 for an upcoming month long trip to Italy. We'll be taking trains from place to place and I wanted a manageable travel backpack to supplement the small rolling bag I'll also have. I researched and tried on multiple bags. In the 40L'ish size range the Fairview has by far the the best suspension and hip belt of any bag I found. At 60+ comfort is my #1 consideration and I was shocked to find how almost no similar sized travel bags had a good enough hip belt to very comfortably transfer the weight off shoulders. The bags material and zippers seem quite sturdy and an array of handles will make carrying a breeze if I want to hold the bag rather than put it on my back. A pass through to drop the bag onto my rolling bags handle would have been a nice touch but I'm using the nicely placed strap tighteners for that purpose and that seems to work OK. So, what's the "but" about? Outside zipper pockets!! Yes, there's an open outside pocket but it can't be closed. Come on Osprey, it would take so little to do much better. This is such a high quality bag but with no place to reasonably securely put things I want easy access to I can only give it three stars. Add two well placed and resonably sized outside zippered pockets and it would get five stars from me for sure. I'd still recomment the bag - again, best suspension out there - but with the concern about the lack of outside zippered pockets.
