Awesome pack, but better to buy pieces separately

I bought this to bring on a long trip, and my travel partner bought the Farpoint 40 (basically the men's model of this pack, without the removable day pack). Because I saw both actually side by side, I realized that the 40l Fairview (and Farpoint) has some exterior pockets and a laptop sleeve, whereas the 40l bag that comes as part of this set has only the one large main pocket (and two zip mesh pockets inside, which the separate 40l also has). As a result, I returned the set and bought the 40l and the daypack separately. They work exactly the same and the whole Fairview/Farpoint system is interchangeable, but I like having the additional organizational help, as even with packing cubes I tend to lose smaller objects in the cavernous main pocket. I especially like the idea of an easy access pocket on the front of the big bag that I can slip things in and out of, but it's still hidden behind the daypack that's strapped in front of it for a little extra protection. I didn't see this spelled out in any reviews, by Osprey themselves or anywhere else before buying, so I thought I'd say so here, just so people know the fullest picture of the options.

Didn't Love, Too much going on

I didn't love it! I ordered 4 backpacks to compare for a 2-week trip abroad. The other 3 I was comparing are: Cotopaxi Allpa 42 L Travel Pack, REI Co-op Women's Ruckpack 40 Recycled Pack, and Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L. Cotopaxi and REI packs blew the others out of the water. This Osprey pack is essentially a 30L pack plus a 15L day pack. I didn't like that every time you need to get something out of it, there are several straps/buckles you have to finagle and it was kind of frustrating. It's good quality, nice features, but just too cumbersome and overcomplicated for me and what I wanted in a pack.

Fairpoint 55 backpack/travel bag

I’m a woman 120 pounds ,5’3”…and this was not a good fit for my size. I went to Europe for two weeks and used the system and was miserable. I put it through its paces too… Used every feature it offered. if I was a big strapping young man, sure it would be awesome, but not for a small person ! I had to pack a variety of climate clothes which created bulk and weight …if you are just going someplace warm and sunny it might be OK. It’s pushing it as far as carry-on, but I did carry it on a number of flights and finally checked it on my third flight… just could not manage it anymore. It’s just too big for a woman who is on the slighter side. I wish I had consulted REI because they would not have steered me towards that pack. I returned it and ordered the Sojourn 44. (I was really after the type of backpack that zips all around and not just at the top) I’ll let you know how I like the Sojourn.

Best. Travel. Bag. EVER.

This bag is AMAZING. I returned a different, highly recommended travel backpack because it was extremely uncomfortable. Meredith at the Tualatin REĂŤ recommended this bag to me and spent a good 20 minutes making all of the minute adjustments that are possible to make it fit me perfectly. The extra day bag is a definite bonus and the fact that you can attach it either to the bag itself or to your fron-side when wearing the backpack is a nice security bonus. We are traveling Europe for 5 weeks soon and this bag is really going to make it an enjoyable trip.

Nearly perfect travel bags.

We purchased the men's and women's for a tour of Scotland. Both bags are working out great, with two exceptions. An integrated rain cover for the day bag would be a plus but what we really miss is small external loops on the day bag. There are five on the larger backpack, none on the day bag. The larger pull through sections in the middle that the straps go through to secure the smaller day bag to the larger backpack could be used but they are too wide for most carabiners that we have on hand. A bungee is needed to then attach other items to the bungee. Small loops would be perfect on the smaller day bag, it is surprising that there are none.

The perfect Carry On travel bag

I was looking for the perfect Carry On backpack for traveling hands free and I found it. This bag was within the carry on guidelines and I used the day bag as my personal bag, which fit nicely under the seat in front of me. I used the backpack for a 4 day trip where I was traveling with my mom, who needs a walker and cannot wheel her own bags so having my luggage hands free was super helpful. The bag opens fully for easy packing. The straps help compress to ensure your bag can fit in the overhead. I appreciate how the day bag can either piggyback the backpack or be used in front of you for quick access to your personal items. I liked the Fairview 55 so much my nephew purchased the Farpoint 55. What a better traveling experience.

Just get the 40l

I like the 40l bag and it worked very well on a trip to Europe for 2 weeks as my main bag, but the 15l bag is both too small for what I carry for under the seat usage and too big for me when attached to the 40l bag. The 15l bag is awkward to use, the dark interior and small opening made getting stuff in and out or finding smaller items difficult and the lack of more than one smaller pocket was hard for smaller items unless you like using a lot of pouches. Carrying the 15l on front was a bit better but attaching and unattaching was difficult and annoying. If I was to do it again - I would just get the 40l fairpoint and not the 55l.

Great bag, but problem with load-bearing straps

I love this bag and own the Osprey 28L Skimmer as well, so this is an excellent larger option for backpackers. It fits well and has a large capacity, and I LOVE the little day pack it comes with! However, I have one issue with the “load-bearing” straps. This is a 55L so assuming the straps (the ones that attach at the very top of the shoulders) are actually intended to help manage a larger load, they are not effective in doing so. The ladder lock buckle does not catch the strap. Every time I moved, the strap would loosen from the buckle. I intend to sew in a stopper or replace the buckle but it’s an odd defect to have on such an expensive bag. For reference, I brought my bag in to REI and the workers agreed it was strange, and we tried another of the same bag and the same defect was present.

An absolute gem of a backpack

I looked at every available backpack in this size for my upcoming trip and read hundreds of reviews on all the different options. I selected this backpack and after 5 months of travelling through 10 different countries, I am so pleased with this pack. There is great attention to detail in the design , and everything about this pack serves the purpose excellently. I absolutely love this backpack.

wanted to love it

In Dec 2023, we bought three of these packs for a trip to England where we were travelling by train, subway, and plane exclusively, so lots of walking from stations to hotels. I really wanted to love this setup, as I have an Osprey Aura 65 backpack that fits like a glove and am pleased with the brand. However, in practice, all three of us found the backpack to be unwieldy especially with the daypack attached. The hipbelts are not sufficient so shoulders bear the full pack weight. After the first morning, we resorted to carrying the big pack duffel-style by the side handle, while wearing the daypack. This totally negated the whole hands-free purpose of this setup. Dislikes: 1. hipbelt is inadequate. I realize there are trade-offs to be able to tuck the harness system away. it just didn't work for us. 2. daypack opening is weirdly narrow, making it hard to load and retrieve items 3. daypack is not flat on bottom, so it kept falling over when trying to load or just resting on flat surface 4. daypack did not have way to secure to big pack other than two pass-thru straps. it kept sliding down the big pack and dangling. finally ended up using cable ties to connect the handles. 5. lack of exterior slide-in pockets on big pack to hold small items and documents Likes: 1. great jewel-tone colors 2. exterior mesh pouches on daypack were perfect for large water bottles and rain jackets 3. fit easily as carry-on in overhead bins 4. big pack handles are nicely padded
