Well designed and built for work and travel
Michael

I've been keeping my eye on this backpack for a while as a backpack that can work for both work and travel and so far I have been very impressed. I wanted something that was small enough to serve as my personal item, yet big enough to carry my laptop, work items, and lunch for those days when I go into the office. With this backpack I got the bonus of a well built (and rugged) exterior that should hold up to many years of use, well designed access points, and a reasonable number of grab points on the bag to allow me to grab the bag from the side, top, or by the straps (I have found that too many handles limit the ability to have an effective water bottle pocket and have a tendency to catch on things). The dual top handles are big enough to comfortably fit my hands, and while not overly padded, they are well designed with a soft touch material on one side (which contrasts nicely against the greenish-brown nutria color) so that they seem comfortable. They also serve as a handy way to hold the bag open while loading as well as an easy way to pick up the bag if the laptop panel is opened fully. I also like the expanding gusset as a nice way to add extra space (or to compress the packed material down) without resorting to straps that can get in the way of the zipper for the main compartment. As far as the color/material goes, I chose the Nutria, and I love it; it is kind of a slightly greenish-brown color (it looks much nicer than it sounds), and it should age nicely (particularly with the nature of the waxed canvas) and last a long time. In travel mode I wanted a backpack that can fit my CPAP, iPad, and headphones for easy access during the flight, and it had to have a luggage pass through to slide it on to my rolling carry on. So far, this backpack seems to meet all my needs. I love the way that the laptop storage completely unzips so that I can lay this thing out flat on the belt for the xray machine at the airport, and the stow away divider between the main compartment and the laptop area will be great as I won't even need to remove my CPAP from the bag when going through security. I like the way that the luggage pass through is aligned so that the bag is upright on top of my rolling luggage so that I can easily access stuff inside the bag without worrying about it spilling out or worrying about my water bottle coming out of the pocket. I also like the fact that the front of the bag is largely devoid of excess attachment points (besides the hidden daisy chain) so that there is less to snag when stowing under the seat in front of me on the plane and so that the backpack doesn't look like I just stepped off the trail. For work, I am easily able to fit my laptop, charger and other accessories in the well organized laptop section (I love that there is a sleeve for the laptop and a second one for the iPad, plus a zippered pocket for the charger and other accessories). The main compartment, while the opening is a bit snug, it is easy to get my lunch and all the other things I need for a day in the office both in and out of the compartment. I especially appreciate the absence of straps (my previous backpack was a Deuter Gigant, which is also a nice backpack, but I constantly found myself fighting with the compression straps when opening and closing the zippers on the main compartment). The front panel is also nicely laid out with just enough organization to fit the things I need, without having so much space that I end up overloading it. I am currently using the zippered pocket inside the front panel to carry small items, but that may chance as I use the backpack more, but it is easily accessible and looks like a good place to store my sunglasses when travelling.

Even though 90% of the population is right-handed, this model places the water bottle pocket on the left side.

Huge capacity!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m taking this bag to Disney in 2 weeks. It’s going to hold all the necessities for me, hubby, and 5 year old twins. I love how durable the bag is. I’m not concerned whatsoever about it falling apart and I can tell it’s going to protect everything inside from any potential Florida pop-up storms. This would easily hold everything a person would need for a weekend getaway. I took some photos of the inside of the bag. One photo has a 17” laptop inside the laptop sleeve. Another photo has TWO 17” laptops… one in each laptop sleeve. Two fit snug, but worked. 1 laptop and 1 tablet would fit much better. All of the pockets have extra pockets inside for more organization. I also love that this can expand for more room, if needed. Overall, very high quality product!

Perfect travel backpack

After a decade with my old travel backpack, I realized it was time to find a replacement. I took the decision very seriously and read reviews and watched YouTube videos. I decided on the Thule because its size seemed right, it was expandable, and had lots of organization. I've used it on several trips and I'm very happy with it. It fits under the airline seat. Holds everything I need and more. It's also much more organized than my old stuff and dump bag. It's comfortable to wear. I do wish it had two bottle holders, but so far, it hasn't been an issue. I'm very happy with this bag and look forward to using it for a very long time.

Brilliant Design

A very well thought out travel backpack. It is super comfortable to wear and the quality appears to be excellent. Extremely happy with it and wish I had had it on my trip to Greece last summer instead of the bargain basement backpack that I took. I will be using it in three weeks when we fly cross country from Washington to Florida, for our excursion to the Florida Everglades, and on our Amtrak travel back home.

Great commuter bag

Great backpack. Very roomy laptop sleeve and additional padded compartments for electronics plus expandable middle section for all other documents. Bought to use as a work backpack instead of a briefcase and like the optional side handle, but wish there was a way to remove or secure backpack straps so they didn't hang when you do that. For what it's worth though, these are not floppy backpack straps and they do stay close to the bag when you carry it with the side handle. Overall a great buy from the Annual Sale and incredibly comfortable for commuting. Is also large enough to be your only bag for short business trips.

Thule Almost Got it Right

Overall, the Aion is a well designed, quality bag with great organizational features. However, I can’t believe Thule would use a frail piece of plastic on their key strap. Total cost of this bag (with tax) was $206. The key holder on this backpack is useless. Their design team should know better. At this price point, users expect durable fabric, zippers and accessories. I contacted Thule customer service to share feedback. I’ll be cutting off the plastic clip and sewing on a metal one.

LOVE this versatile backpack!

It is so comfortable on my shoulders and back - it was easy for me to carry along our recent adventures! The different pockets also made it easy to stay organized while traveling, which I love. So happy with this bag!

Decent bag, not thrilled with the straps

I travel for work often and was excited to come across this bag. The bag is okay, the straps are disappointing. Narrow enough to cut into my chest and shoulders when I have the bag filled (which is always because I only pack carry-on). The material inside the straps seems cheap and I can’t imagine it will hold up very long. The straps also attach to the bag about 2 inches below the top of the bag, and offer no way to snug the top of the bag closer to your shoulders. It ends up hanging low and leans out from the shoulder making the weight feel more awkward and not totally secure. There’s a cross-chest strap that helps, but doesn’t fix the issue.

Love it, just one thing I want to call out...

After comparing something like 30 backpacks for a new personal item/carry-on laptop bag, I settled on this bag for its organizational layout and price point. It arrived today and I couldn't be happier with the quality. It's notably larger and roomier than expected -- I can fit my Nintendo Switch in the accessory half-pocket and could probably get away with packing a second small laptop in the tablet pocket in a pinch. Perfect size for a weekender. My only gripe with the bag... I'm a fairly petite woman with narrow shoulders and the shoulder straps are not a great fit for my body. The maximum tightness on the sternum strap is not even close to secure enough for me. Not a huge deal when I'm planning to use the bag for air/train travel and road trips (can always use the luggage pass-through panel), but if I were to go on a long hike or backpacking trip I'd be concerned about comfort. If you have a narrow build and you're planning to carry a lot of weight in this bag for several hours, try it on in person first if you can!

Superb quality and function, good sized

This bag is 28L size. It is a good sized pack but not large. It is great for a travel carry on but small for an all-in-one that would replace a carry on backpack and a piece of luggage. I love the details from the zippers to the flexibility inside to the expansion zip out. The fabric is supple yet durable. The shoulder straps are curved for a more contoured fit - especially for women. I did also get the hip pack to couple it as a waste strap - it rides higher on the torso than I would like (I’m 5’9”) but it is a great combo and much better than trying to stuff the hip pack into the pack when you are flying with carryon limitations.
