Solid Alternative to Premium Urban Travel Packs

I had the ability to compare in-person the Osprey Farpoint 40, Aer Travel Pack 3, Peak Designs 40L Travel Pack, Patagonia MLC 45 and this 40L Aion. I own the Osprey Porter 45 and that is a terrific bag for packing lots of stuff but with this purchase, I wanted something more urban and versatile. I wanted a bag that had a sizable, independent laptop pocket (not just sleeve) where I can stash my laptop case, and have quick access when going through TSA. I wanted an easy to access and well organized compartment for smaller items, an independent main compartment for clothes and finally, I wanted this in a form factor that I could potentially squeeze under the seat in front of me as a personal item. This Aion 40L bag comes closest to meeting those requirements. The Aer 3 and Peak Designs 45L packs are great bags whose size and structure make them look way too big consider as a personal item relative to the Aion; they are a perfect carryon replacement, much like the Porter 45 I already have. In a comparison with other top Travel Packs, I think this Aion 40L is a fair value. It doesnt feel as robust as the Aer or Peak Designs but it is versatile and less expensive.

Still uncertain...

I debated between 3 and 4 stars on this bag as there are some great ideas, but still a lot lacking. As another reviewer said - do not pack this bag full. If you tried to put something in every divider pocket, honestly the zippers wouldn't shut and it definitely would be tight, if not impossible, to get into the overhead bins on a flight. Pros: divided zip interior, ability to fully open bag (unlike classic backpacks), passport pocket (secure, but accessible), water bottle pocket, and handles on all sides. Like the gray (slight blue) color - doesn't seem to wear/show dirt like reviews of the black one. Cons: interior straps to secure items aren't long enough (even on max - no cinching down your stuff!); straps are also a huge pain to handle each time as they also have a slide mechanism instead of a regular clip; to wear this bag packed full and walk around - it really needs a waist strap and not just a chest clip (this is one of my bigger gripes - and maybe if I didn't take a computer and was on a 2-night trip it'd be fine, or going somewhere by car). I've taken this bag on three longer trips now: 16 day trip to Italy in the fall, 10 day trip to Portland in the winter, and a 6 day trip to Houston (somehow in the awful winter weather, too). The Italy trip was a tight pack, but included two pairs of shoes, a jacket, several pairs of jeans and sweaters. I wouldn't have been able to bring this bag without use of compression cubes (I bought the Thule version to replace some worn out ones and LOVE those). It was doable, but frustrating, and honestly my older Osprey Kestrel 38 might have been easier to take. Both of my US trips required I bring a computer for working remotely (one of my main reasons for purchasing this bag - to eliminate a backpack and a carryon), so I utilized the back pocket and also packed my reading materials (books, planner) in this space. The padding is nice, but does add bulk. I'm not at all worried about any damage to my items though. I have another 11 day trip to NYC/Boston coming up (with a computer) that I'm hoping to see if I can dial in the bag a bit more... so far it hasn't impressed me in real use situations the way I thought it might after looking at it in-store and watching a few videos.

Nifty travel pack.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] For a travel bag this accomplish a good amount and I'm fairly happy with it. It is able to fit up to 40L - whatever that means. for me it means 1 pairs of jeans, 1 pair of joggers, 2 shorts, 3 shirts, 4 pairs of socks, and 4 pairs of boxers. It doesn't feel overly stuffed. It has nice retention clips as a water tightish bag that can put wet items into for storage. I have the thule covert bag and the zipper pulls are nicer. These are just a rubber seal around the rope tie. The covert has a very textured plastic tie that should be on all their bags. Overall pretty happy with it as a weekender bag. Works for my usage and happy to recommend it.

dirt does show easily

I bought this backpack in black. Everything about it is satisfactory but dirt easily shows. It looks old in less than an hour of first use. I should have bought it in a different color. I also wish there was a waist belt to buckle up. The fully loaded bag is a bit heavy for long walk. Do not buy the “sold separately “ belt bag as recommended in the video. I bought one and it didn’t work! First, the bag is impossible to go through the hole after the bag is already filled with stuff. Second, the iron buckle of that belt bag is awkward to use and noisy. In summary, I still like this backpack very much for its high quality and usability. It is perfect for business travelers.

Good for work travel

I purchased this backpack for a work trip, overall I liked it and would recommend. As others have mentioned, it does easily become scratched up and looks worn in, but I don't mind the look. It worked as a personal item on a Southwest flight (fit under the window seat with no issue). It easily fit everything I needed for 2 days and was easy to organize with all the pockets. The only con is that it is not the most comfortable to carry, expect some shoulder and back pain if you're walking a decent amount - but that is to be expected with any large backpack filled to the brim.

Sleek and Thoughtful

A sleek, well-laid-out 40L bag! Passport pocket, small accessory pocket, clothes section WITH dry bag, AND an electronics / laptop section. AND it holds a water bottle. It has everything I want and still packs neatly away under the seat. I am so happy with this purchase.

Awesome carry-on bag

I've been using this as my carry-on bag for two years. The laptop sleeve is awesome and padded very well. There is plenty of room for clothing and the outside pocket is awesome for electronics accessories, or anything you need quick access to. There's a small pocket at the very top of the back that holds keys while traveling. The compression straps on the inside are way too short but I normally don't use them so not a big deal.

Perfect travel bag for me

This bag is very well made, has large capacity, yet fits comfortably under an airline seat. I especially like that there are numerous pockets on the top area of the bag, which allows me to pack so I can easily access things like pills, hygiene products, a lunch, and electronic paraphernalia when I am flying and have the bag under the seat in front of me.

Great bag, but needing more to justify the price

I have owned this bag for about a year and have used it on about a dozen trips, from cruises, country hopping around Europe, and road trips to cities and national parks. So suffice it to say I have put this bag through a lot of extensive real world use. The bag gets the job done and I can easily sustain myself for a week or a few days more out of it. For reference this is what I usually pack for road trip consisting of city and national park visits in colder weather, this will last me 6 days before I have to do laundry: 1 pair minimalist running shoes,1 pair of running shorts, 1 workout shirt, 2 pairs running socks, 6 pairs of underwear, 6 pairs of wool hiking socks, 1 t-shirt, 3 nylon long-sleeve shirts, gloves, neck gator, beanie, down puffer jacket, polyester fleece sweater, and 1 wool long-sleeve shirt. Non-clothes items I pack: Soap bar w/ case, normal sized stick of deodorant, travel size shampoo bottle, double edge safety razor, lathering brush, small paddle brush, toothbrush, small charging cube and wires, Roku remote/box with HDMI and USB wires, bulky MSI gaming laptop with its very bulky charger, Kindle Fire 10, headlamp, and passport. If you don't pack shoes in it and/or own a slimmer laptop, you could easily fit a lot more stuff. Pros: Sits well on my shoulders even though I load it very heavy, the water bottle pocket does not become useless when the bag is stuffed (I can still easily fit my 32oz Nalgene), very durable and rain resistant construction, dedicated pocket that will fit a passport and more. Cons: The interior compression straps don't use the typical 3 pronged clip design (its a hassle to get them unclipped), this are no exterior straps or bungee web to secure extra items like jackets or a baseball cap, the should straps cant be tucked away or detached so no turning it into duffle bag, finally, it does not come with a hip belt, you have to pay extra for one. All those cons make it not worth the price to me, especially the fact that there are no exterior compression straps that I can hook extra items to or tie a jacket to the outside with. This bag is good, but gets beat out by the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 40L since the Osprey eliminates all those cons while keeping the pros.

Love the new bag

I bought this bag specifically for a week-log trip to the east coast, and I am so happy I did. It held everything I needed with room to spare, was easy to carry, fit in plane overhead bin with no trouble. It was easy to live out of, no hassle digging for what I needed. I am very pleased.

Great bag

I was looking for a bag to take to europe in addition to a carryon suitcase. This really could hold as much as my carryon. I dont think I could get away with it being my personal item though. You could stow it under the chair, but it for long flights I think it would get in your way too much, as it the back side is padded to protect your laptop, and wouldnt bend to make room for our legs. Im only critiquing this from the my own needs. In general great bag, great quality, nice looking.
