Perfect Hat!!
My wife for Father's Day had me pick a couple of hats for hiking and all around use. I was diagnosed with several skin cancers over the last 15 years and was looking for a hat other than my Tilley I used when boating. Although it is a great hat it just isn't great for everyday use. I was wearing baseball caps and discovered recently I had another cancer on the top of my bald head. My doctor told me regular base ball caps DO NOT protect you from UV rays. So this hat fits great, is light weight, is easy to hand wash (I can't find info that tells you how the manufacturer recommends cleaning!), protects from UV rays and neatly folds into itself so you can literally put it in a pocket. I would highly recommend this hat.
Good packable cap, but pocket is silly
I have the previous version of this cap. It sort of reminds me of a European military field cap without looking too "tactical". It is a great hat for stuffing in a bag and good for exercising in moderate temperatures. It is functional and lightweight, but not super breathable, so I don't use it during the warmer months. I think the pocket is unnecessary (and slightly silly) - the cap folds down and can be secured with the elastic band in the back - quicker and easier than trying to stuff it into the pocket. Not everything has to have a built in stuffing pocket! I am subtracting one star for that one minor shortcoming.
Long Overdue Review for this AWESOME Hat!
I first purchased a packable hat back in May 2023 in the color Fig. I loved the style, the light-weight, and quick drying features so much that I continue to purchase each new color as they come out. The Shadow Ray color will be my 5th hat. I'm very active everyday so having multiple hats allows me to wear a fresh one when needed. I toss mine into the wash on a cold, delicate cycle and hang dry; so easy! Despite the many wears and washes, I find these hats hold up pretty well. Since I wear them for work, I'm not too fussy. The soft brim allows me to fold it up for a cute Euro-Cycling look (I do this when I'm in the shade and that's what it reminds me of! Haha:). The elastic closure is fantastic for claw clips and pony tails! I can pull my hair back into a mid-low bun and the wide elastic opening goes right over. I cinch it tight and it'll stay all day, even in the windiest weather. The only feature I don't take advantage of is the packability, but that's only because I wear them so often. Definitely give this hat a go if you're looking for a cute and very functional lightweight cap!
The best hat
I bought this hat last year and liked it so much that I bought it in another color this year. It's rare that I find a packable hat large enough to fit my giant noggin, but this one fits perfectly with just a little room to tighten it. Not to mention it looks cool and is comfortable to wear for long hours of hiking. It doesn't give me a headache or leave an indentation in my skin. It packs away nicely but I find it just as easy to shove it in a bag or pocket without going through the trouble of folding it up. It always retains its shape and has not shrunk or stretched despite being machine washed and dried several times. It's nice to have the new blue one, but the old maroon one is still holding up well after over a year daily wear.
Cute & comfortable; lightweight but not vented
I keep this in my backpack all the time - it's very comfortable and soft fabric. I like the elastic at the back - easy to pull a ponytail through without getting hairs caught like caps with velcro often do. While this hat is lightweight, I do notice that it doesn't dump heat as efficiently as something with a mesh -- I find myself pulling it off when I get into a spot of shade to cool off. Hat fits me perfectly but I rarely cinch down the cord (only if it's very windy and I want it to feel "tight") - I have a pretty medium-size-for-a-woman head, so I could imagine this one-size-fits-all being too small for some
Fits my large noggin
I like the bungee style closure, but one-size hats with that feature rarely fit my head. This is a perfect fit, relaxed but snug. I don't even have to open the bungee all the way. I didn't realize until after buying it that it folds up into its own pocket - very cool feature. It's also super light. Finally, I really like the color. It's like a washed out redwood hue that looks good with other earth tones.
Not one size for all!
I love the print of the fabric. The hat is HUGE and adjustment is two elastic strings with a toggle in the back. Don’t make a mistake and lay your head back or it’ll hurt! The material hangs down and either covers my ears or pushes them outward. It is surprisingly very hot for a summer cap. Cannot recommend unless you have a very large head.

Newer version disappointing
I recently bought what was supposedly the same model as one I bought two years ago ,and lost. This newer version runs so large that if you cinch it all the way for a smaller head it bunches up in the back. I had to return it. I wish REI would return to the previous model. The colors and patterns were nicer too.
A candidate for REI's best product.
As a fair-skinned guy without much hair I need to wear a hat when outdoors for any length of time. I seldom leave home without this hat, literally. It's almost weightless and rolls up to the size of a pack of cards, small enough to fit in my EDC bag, in case I leave behind my wide-brimmed hat, or I'm just outside longer than I expected. But this hat isn't just a backup---also works as a soft casual cap. I even wear it sometimes at the gym. Machine washed several times and it just looks more "experienced" and broken in.
