Shockingly surprised in the best way

I've never fit Merrell shoes, the lasts were always a bit too narrow for my regular 10.5 D width feet even with thin or medium Smartwool. The new Moab 3 men's hiking shoe is a perfect fit for me! I always swap in black Superfeet, but the Moab 3's insole has just the right amount of arch support and cushion. Can't remember the last time I kept a hiker's factory supplied insole. Each 10.5 men's shoe weighs 465 grams each. No heel slippage, toebox spacious enough for swelling yet are not sloppy no matter the temperature or weather (some shoes constrict or contract when wet or humid, etc). And this may seem trivial, but the laces do not come untied nor need double-knotted. It's the little things... The Moab 3 is a true hiker. It's not an urban exploring/travel/casual/mixed-use shoe. It has a very solid sole and lug pattern that I found needs a trail's everchanging undulations to bring the shoe to life. It's very stable side to side (no IT band pain from unsupportive shoes), does well on loose over hard and when surfaces are uneven such as dried mud. With such good footing on gravel, sand, dirt, I was worried it'd be a slippery accident on water. Not so! They would not be my choice as a do-it-all for airports, cement jungle, pavement pounding (after about 5 hours the shoes felt a little softer). Thankfully that's not what Merrell designed the Moab 3 for. They are a great-fitting lightweight hiker that does so many things so very well.

Not what they used to be

I've been gearing up with this shoe for decades and I have noticed that over the past several years they have lost their once high level of quality. I purchased two pairs about 10 months ago, the waterproof moab and the Gortex moab. The first thing you will notice is that they do not have the comfort they used to have. The bottoms are so thin that you feel everything you walk on, whether gravel, roots, rocks, whatever. The first thing you should do is remove the insoles and throw them directly in the trash. Even with new Spenco inserts they still don't have enough meat to soften the feel. I'm a lifelong hiker and as mentioned, have used the Merrell products for ever. I think I have purchased my last pair. Quality has literally tanked over the past several years and I can't see spending the money on a product that they have decided to take shortcut after shortcut to reduce the cost of manufacturing in order to maintain profit. Why not at least provide reasonably decent inserts. The sides of the shoes blow out more frequently than in the past as well. It is typical of manufactures these days to slowly, piece by piece lower their quality, maintain price and too bad for the consumer. Time to move on.

! Do not buy until they fix this 1 design flaw !

There is hard, Nylon plastic shank right underneath the ball of your foot because of a design oversight. Merrel must change the shank design back to the Moab 2 to regain comfort in smaller men's and larger women's sizes. This is not an issue with a single shoe: I've purchased three different pairs in three different sizes to see if any are more comfortable -- all of them have the same stabbing pain right under the ball of my foot. The Moab 3 have a redesigned footbed, including a longer, lower quality shank which is the same in many different sizes of shoe. The shank is about half an inch longer, and has been moved forward by about a quarter of an inch. The shank is so far forward now that it's right under the ball of my foot. The shank in the Moab 2 was shorter and thinner, providing stability to the shoe without impacting comfort near the ball of the foot. The shank has gone down in quality too -- the shank is now thicker has two holes which are punched, front and back. The holes when punched leave a "dip" in the shank, causing there to be dead space in the footbed, and a feeling that you're stepping on a ledge right on the ball of your foot. With this design, the shank is so long and so far forward that the shoe doesn't bend except right in the toe, causing the ball of the foot to be compressed against hard plastic when pushing off. It's difficult to wear these for longer than an hour without serious pain. I had to modify my shoes to get them to feel "okay-ish." I cut out the front part of the shank in my Moab 3 (women's 9.5 wide), and replaced some of the missing space with foam from another shoe. @Merrel, if possible I would like to very briefly (< 15 minutes) discuss the issue with someone to articulate exactly the issue that I'm having and to help improve your product. I loved my Moab 2's. I'm really sad to see and feel a decline in comfort in the 3's, and I'm worried I might have to hike the PCT on a different shoe.

Moab 3 poor quality and craftsmanship

-bought less then 6 months ago and the sole is already worn to the gray undersole on toe and heel. -Inter sides on heels worn to the padding -like the Moab 2 limited arch support and have purchased after market arch support to prevent planters faucitis. -

Thankfully It’s Still A Good Shoe

Wasn’t sure if they could actually improve the Moab 2 as it was and still is a great boot/shoe. The good news is that they didn’t screw up the Moab 3 in the update process now that Wolverine owns the brand. All of the great attributes of the Moab 2 are in the Moab 3. I do prefer the outsole tread design of the Moab 2, but the 3 works well thus far. We’ll see how the new, more open lug design holds up over time wear-wise and durability-wise because the Moab 2 outsoles are very durable and long wearing. All in all, they didn’t break something that worked and wasn’t broken.

Bought these for my husband and he loves them. We've hiked over 40 miles on our vacation and he wore them straight out the box and had no issues. We spent 10 days hiking in zion national park, bryce canyon National Park, Grand Canyon, antelope canyon and Vegas. He wears a 9.5eee and wore 9.5w

Size Difference

I purchased a pair of hiking shoes to wear as an everyday shoe because I wanted to travel light and didn't want to carry my regular hiking boots on my trip to Alaska. I wear a size 10 1/2 W. The shoes that I received from Merrell are significantly larger. I checked my regular shoes and my feet fit fine in 10 1/2. See the photo. The pen is touching the tip of my big toe. With the addition of rag socks the shoes fit, but with regular socks my feet are swimming in these boots. I will be traveling in the tropcs next. I'm going to need a shoe insert for these boots to work.

Great beginner shoe

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I gifted these to my fiancé to go on hikes with together and he had nothing but amazing things to say about these! As soon as they came in the mail he wanted to try them so we went for a nice walk. He had nothing but good things to say about them. He said they were super comfortable, super light weight, nice amount of cushion on the heel so they weren’t hard on his feet, the soles have a great grip for walking up and down hills. Of course this is only a couple of hours of wearing them but so far there’s nothing really to complain about. Overall I would say this is a pretty great beginners hiker shoe that is pretty reasonably priced.

Comfortable, if only they made them like they use2

Bought a pair of Moab 3 a little over year ago but if you consider our long Canadian winters I’ve only worn them for a relatively short period of time, unfortunately both shoes are separating apart at the soles, I’ve had to resort back to wearing my 5/6 year old pair of Moab’s . I‘m hoping this can be resolved with customer service because I absolutely loved the comfort and durability of my previous pair of Merrell, and would like to give them a better rating especially considering my past experience, besides I’m not very keen on having to buy a new brand of shoes so early after my last purchase.

Great Fit

It’s hard for me to find shoes that fit. The shoes fit well and they have excellent traction so they don’t slip a lot. The only reason I didn’t give them a five star rating is because they don’t exactly match the color shown on the product page on the website. I was expecting them to be more of a natural leather color. I kept them anyway

Tough enough for the Rim to Rim.

Started at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Took North Kaibab to Phantom Ranch to South Kaibab up to the South rim. Around 24 miles in around 12 hours in my Moab 3's. They were a great shoe for those trails. Definitely needed my Dirty Girl gaiters to keep the rubble out of the shoes.
