Great for hiking

I frequently do 3-5 mile easy-moderate hikes and this pack is perfect. I used to carry a full backpack when hiking but I would frequently groan about a sweaty back, too bulky for short hikes etc. Well this pack is perfect for my needs. I carry a knife, pepper spray, bug spray, keys, wallet, first aid kid, and a water bottle and still have room for small extras. I really like the pocket on the main strap, fits my iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Strap is Not for the busty gals

I love the size of this bag and that it is quick dry on the back. It loses two stars because the strap is really thick and I have a large chest so the strap always tried to ride above one of my boobs instead of between. It’s hard to explain in writing but my fellow chesty gals will understand. I like the straps of the Kavu bags much better.

Great for Short Hikes and Walks

I bought this bag for short trail hikes and liked it so much that I also take it on walks and grocery runs too! Bag is roomy enough to store my phone, sunglasses, water bottle, wallet, extra tote bag, e-book reader, power bank, and snacks. I chose the Shine Yellow color and the shade is so nice. The outer straps can also be tucked inside for a cleaner look. I like that it doesn't have external water bottle holster since I sling this bag around so much, the bottle would probably slip out all the time. The front pocket is also convenient to carry sun screen and lip balm. One thing I'd like to see in future versions is maybe some horizontal division/organization on the front pocket, as the stored items eventually end up all jumbled on the bottom. Also sometimes the front strap comes a little loose when I'm slinging the bag from back to front. So I tied the extra loose strap to the bag and moved the strap band to the buckle. If I ever lose this bag, I'd mourn it and buy another one.

Forgot I owned this bag

Only reason why I’m even writing this is because I’m searching for a new bag and remembered I have this bag. I got it in the bright yellow thinking I’d love it because I also own the older version of this bag in black. There were “improvements” and to me they lost the comfort of the older bag when making said improvements. The padding on the this bag compared to the older one was too much. The removal of the Patagonia strap right under the strap pocket and adding it to the top makes it a weird fit when I strap my keys in it’s carabiner and last but not least the material gets more dirty then original. I’ll use this bag but it’s not one I pick up often.

Good purchase with some notes.

Nice bag. Enough space for a day out around the city or a morning hike. However there could be some improvements. Mainly the large interior pocket could use an additional zippered pocket. The volume is big enough that stuff just sits moving about. The strap could use some more padding. Overall a great bag!!!!

Sometimes older is better

A practical alternative to a purse but lacks the best components of the original design. The Patagonia sling bag I bought a thousand years ago is showing its age with stains and missing zipper pulls. Cosmetics aside, I much prefer the old to the new. First, the old one is made of a soft, nylon-like fabric that's lightweight and molds to my shoulder and back. The new one is a stiff, unwieldy fabric that feels like carrying a chunk of cardboard around. Secondly, my old sling back has a zippered, interior mesh pocket within the main compartment for keeping valuables safe and secure. The new version has an interior compartment with an open envelope that serves no purpose as far as I can tell— as if your wallet is going to politely stay put while you climb over a barbed wire fence or do a handstand. I give the new version credit for having a larger exterior phone pocket. The old version was made for a flip phone (yes, it's that old.). Even so, my old sling bag has a secondary, small zippered pocket on the outside that easily accommodates today’s larger phones. Had I examined the new sling bag in person, I probably wouldn’t have bought it. Hopefully, I’ll start to like it more over the next thousand years.

The ultimate EDC sling pack.

The Atom 8L is the “Goldielocks” size for an everyday pack, it’s not too big or too small, it’s just right. I’ve been using an older version for about 5yrs and really liked it but felt it could be a tad better with some minor tweaks. Well I’m not sure how Patagonia read my mind but they did. The smaller zipper section is a little bigger, they changed the internal table sleeve into a divider for 2 equal sections, they enlarged the should pocket, and added a handle to the top, and polished everything else. Essentially they made the best EDC sling even better, just can’t say enough good things about this quality sling pack.

Favorite Bag for Day Trips/Hikes

This sling bag has been with me since the beginning of my hiking journey. Its held up perfectly through two separate 100mile in 100days hiking challenges, and its been rained on plenty (keeps everything inside relatively dry). I can fit a 2L water bladder and a flexible 1L water bottle in the bigger compartments, and I can always fit more than I think in the outermost compartment. The mesh pocket holds me phone perfectly and its easy to access everything even when the bag is on. I even prefer this sling bag to two shoulder-strap regular packs! I have the black, but I strapped a neon reflective runners arm band to the front for more visibility!

My 1st Sling Bag

The Patagonia Atom Sling is a weirdly comfortable bag. I constantly put it on backwards which is annoying but once on correctly it is very convenient having everything right there. I do wish the larger pocket had zipped compartments for my edc items like pens, chapstick, lens cloth. I feel like these smaller items get lost in the bag and I have to dig around for them risking dropping it all on the ground. I’ve been using it for over a month now and am still on the fence how I feel about it. The size is a just right but my phone does not fit in the strap pocket. I like the comfort of the bag, it even works over my winter coat.

Returning- nice but did not meet my needs

I bought this in hopes of it being a commuting bag for daily bike ride between my home and office. It is a very nice bag, however, I hoped that the tablet sleeve would fit my iPad Air since I need it for work and school. I could barely fit my iPad into the tablet sleeve. And with its Magic Keyboard case, which adds just a tad more bulk, I could not fit it at all. I'm not going to carry my iPad without its case so I guess this bag is a no-go for me. Maybe by tablet sleeve they meant a small e-reader like a Kindle or something. I ordered it in the mauve color, and the colors appeared way more pink in person. It's a nice item but I will be returning.

Perfect size and very well made

Perfect size and very well made! I wanted a smallish pack for dog walks (1/2 to 1.5 miles) on wooded property adjoining mine. This has enough room for action camera, gimbal, small tripod that I like to take along as well as a collapsible water flask. The zip pocket on the strap holds my iPhone 14 Pro. And the strap allows me to attach my bear spray (I live in NW MT). It is comfortable to wear, easy on and off with zip on top when rotated to the front. I bought the Saffron/Canyon Hike print: nice and bright! My jackets tend toward gray/black/sage and I wanted something that stood out as a non-woods color for visibility. This does that and I think it is pretty ... not my typical pack :)
