Women.deserve.pockets.
I really tried to like this bag, but the lack of internal organization is really hard to work with. The key leash is in a removable laptop sleeve in the middle of a separate compartment at the back of the pack, so not easy to access. The front pocket is a full length vertical zip where everything is just loose. I’m sure this works for someone, but was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. Especially since my husband has the “male” version of the pack and it is incredibly well thought out with great organization components in the vertical zip front pouch. I thought that we were past the point where women had to beg for pockets, but here we are with a pack marketed to women missing any semblance of the things that make the “men’s” pack so awesome 😒
Great for air travel personal item
I liked this backpack. It seems sturdy enough. It's comfortable to carry on my short torso as I am only 5'2". I like that it only has 3 compartments-one in the back with a laptop sleeve, a large main compartment and an outside front pocket that is the length and width of bag. I find when a bag has too many compartments I can't remember where I stuffed items. I really like that the 2 side pockets actually hold my 30 oz water bottles with no problems with a clipping strap to hold it even more securely. It fit easily under the seat on my recent Delta flight. I could have really stuffed it. I don't think it is light enough that I would use it on day hike.
Refugio backpack
I am using this past few months and I love this backpack. This Patagonia backpack offers excellent quality and durability. The big advantage is the removable laptop sleeve, so you can replace it with a hydration pack when you are on the trail. The disadvantage is: this backpack doesn't come with a smaller pocket (typically you get this with The North Face backpacks) that helps to organize small stuff such as passports, credit cards, licenses, pens, etc. It comes with 2 large pockets, and one front decent size pocket with two side pockets for water bottles. Overall, I like it, great for everyday use and a day hike.
ok for lightweight outings.
This is a fine backpack for day trips around town. Lots of compartments, sturdy construction. My kid has one for middle school, I've brought mine on field trips, used it as a gym bag, and to haul stuff around Disneyland, things like that. It's still in great condition after years. But I took it on an actual 5 mile hike last weekend with the only heavy contents being a water bottle and two pro camera lenses and my shoulders were super sore for days. If you're putting any mileage in with any actual weight I'd recommend something with a waist strap or that's otherwise more supported. Just super uncomfortable with weight in it.
Excellent versatile bag
I had read many mixed reviews on this bag and this almost put me off. However I decided to give it a try, the thing that swung it for me was actually the lack of organisational pockets and the removable laptop sleeve! I use this for both everyday going to the office and an underseat personal item on the plane. I actually like the laptop sleeve, this allows me to switch bags and place it into my Kanken Classic on days where I don’t need as much stuff. Whilst travelling it fits my packing cube, toiletries and hair straighteners in the main compartment with room to spare. The front compartment holds a book, travel wallet and glasses case and I use the laptop section to put a jacket or my folded up kanken. I think I have found my perfect backpack.
Perfect travel pack and laptop bag!
This pack is perfect for my frequent travel when I have to fly and be on the road for a couple days at a time. Comes with a laptop pouch that slides into the back compartment and the front allows adequate space for 2-3 days of clothes and a toiletry bag. It has become my go-to bag for work whether I'm flying or not because of how much room it has to pack a jacket or a small cooler bag, but it's a perfect small carry-on size and allows me to get on and off flights and transportation easily. The front vertical zipper compartment makes grabbing charging cords or snacks a cinch!
Great but not very water resistant
Amazing backpack. I’ve had it for over 3 years and it’s still in perfect condition. Washes well - I wash it in the washing machine on delicate and then air dry. The one negative thing is that it isn’t very water repellent. Now that I’m in college and have to walk outside for classes, when it rains my backpack soaks up the water if I don’t completely cover it. It also soaks up any liquid spilled on it. Other than that, I love it. I have to get another one now though that is more water resistant.
no more front organization
Ugh when you buy the Refugio because of the nice color, slightly bigger size, and thinking it has the organization from the previous model after accidentally watching the wrong review video. Disappointed it had that weird laptop pouch within another laptop pocket (??) instead of the front pocket organization I was hoping for. Will be returning and keep looking for a better bag for work and travel. Love Patagonia, but just not this bag.
Solid Construction, poor function
I gave up on this pack while loading it - I didn't feel right using it knowing that it so clearly wasn't going to work for me. The main pocket, with the laptop sleeve, has an incredibly limited opening. In practice, this means that it is difficult to see inside or access items. This is complicated by the fact that there is very limited organization, so you really do need to be able to see inside. I'm struggling to understand what the intended purpose of this bag is. It cannot possibly be work / school, given the complete lack of organization. I cannot imagine it is travel - you'd have to empty it all over your seatmate to find anything. It doesn't appear to be hiking - there is a laptop sleeve inside. Despite loving Patagonia as a company - this falls short and is being returned unused.
Great pack, with good features.
Great pack…which I'm returning tomorrow because I decided I want the 30l one, which I already have received in the mail. I want it for our six week Europe trips where I only take a 19” carryon bag, besides a day pack, so the pack needs to be good. (By the way, I'm 76 and this pack fits me well and will ride well.). PS. We're two weeks into our trip now and I do love this pack!
