High quality
Looks very well made, nice zipper, BOA fastens very securely, I'm very happy with this seat pack.
I stretch this to its limit
People say this pack is small - which is true - but you can still pack a surprising amount of gear in it if you pick carefully. I keep a tube, Crank Brothers F15 multitool, folding SwissTech pliers, one CO2 cartridge, tire levers, patches, glue, master link, oil, pedal spike, tire boot and a small light. Normally I don't use Tubolito tubes but I have one in here because it's very compact. My inflator detaches from the Blackburn CO2'fer pump, so that conserves space. The pack is very well made and extremely secure.
Good Idea. Poor Quality.
I would say this bag is great, but after just a few hundred miles of riding the strap started to rip. I’ve never had this happen with any other saddle bag that I can remember. I contacted Silca about this but haven’t gotten a response in over a week.
Avoid! Expensive concept doesn’t hold up
I bought 3 of these packs because I really liked how secure the Boa strap system is, they looked pretty weatherproof, and their just-right size for my minimal toolkits. They definitely hold things securely under your seat, but unfortunately the zippers have failed on 2 of them already. Seems like the zippers are too fine and can’t handle exposure to grit and dirt, despite the weatherproofing. Not a fun experience to find your pack won’t open when you need to fix something! I tried to bring them back to REI within a year but they wouldn’t replace them or anything because they were “worn. Pretty disappointing for a $50 saddle bag from a company I admire, and not to happy with REI’s declining customer support.
Great pack, TERRIBLE zipper.
Great sized, compact pack for basic tire repair. The BOA system is awesome and keeps it tightly against the seat (no movement!) However, I echo the reviews about the bad zipper - it works great until it gets dirty. Then it jams or doesn't close correctly. I've used mine the last 3 months, and this zipper requires constant cleaning and lubrication to be functional. I'll keep this until it inevitably fails, but it's way too expensive to have such a terrible zipper. If silca fixes it, this would be a perfect piece of gear.
Product not as pictured
REI has sent me the wrong version of this Silca Mattone pack twice. The version I've received does not have the flap to separate items in the pocket. the boa is easy to use and doesn't get stuck to anything like a velco strap could. I have been told by an REI online rep that they do not stock the version with the flap, if that is a decision factor proceed with caution, you may get the version without it.
Seems legit
Like it more than the roll version, much cleaner aesthetic and just as functional. Stays secure on medium-rowdy hardtail descents. Only a handful of rides with it so far, so cannot speak to longevity, seems well constructed though.
Do not purchase!
Although the pack sits securely against the saddle rails with no rattling and holds the right amount of gear (multitool, replacement tube, C02 cartridge, etc.), the unfunctional zipper renders the item useless. After only a year of use and meticulous cleaning of my bike after each ride, the zipper became complete jammed. I needed my multitool and literally had to rip the bag open with a pocket knife.
Cool design, poor execution. Not weather safe.
Cool design poor execution. After my first ride in the rain both the zipper and boa stopped working and I had to break the zipper to get into my pack for my tools.
Smart solution bag
Compact saddle bag to carry just the essentials. Well designed, particularly with no velcro on the outside of the bag, which tends to ruin nice cycling shorts. That alone makes this bag ideal.
