Glad I bought it! Looking forward to mountain use!
I recently picked up this jacket on sale and it wonderful. Lightweight but durable, easy to pack, layer able underneath and should last a long time due to the ability to wax it when necessary. I made a review of it on my YouTube if you are interested in going on a hike with me and hearing my thoughts.
Former KUHL Addict Now Reformed
After living in the forest for several years, I learned through trial and error that pinching pennies on cheaper rain jackets/wind breakers is not the way to go. At my local REI they were sold out of this jacket but I tried on other jackets to get a feel for the fit. They fit like they were made for me. I ordered this online and since it arrived I have been praying for rain. Well my prayers were answered and this jacket kept me dry but was ventilated enough that I didn't succumb to the overheating and sweating that I had become accustomed to with my Colombia rain jacket. What I love most about this jacket is the wire support so I can adjust the hood rim and it doesn't fall in my face (covering my eyes) nor does it over expose my face and eyes when the elements lean towards the brutal side. As a former KUHL addict, I think I've found my new favorite brand. The composition, material, and durability make this jacket worth every dollar I spent.
I believe
Yes it’s expensive and not water proof. Only bad reviews I’ve are complaining about this . Good light weight , durable shell . Not ultra light but I’m also not afraid of tearing the jacket. Waxed it up and withstood hours of drizzle to light rain, but it did get a little damp near the seams on the arms. On the flip side I didn’t get overheated and sweaty . I’ll take outside dampness to base layers getting wet from perspiration. Dried out completely overnight in cold damp weather . Worked well with a puffy, light base layer in nasty wind at 20F too. Full rain jacket is overkill in most situations, you’ll get sweaty , and they don’t last years like I’m expecting this jacket to. Every expensive waterproof jacket I had starts falling apart at the taped seems . Keep a cheap poncho or frogg togg handy if your stuck in a downpour .
5 Days Backpacking Yellowstone
This jacket became my permanent outer layer for five days straight in the Yellowstone backcountry. Vents and pockets are strategically located and easy to get to with a pack on. Arms and neck move fantastically well with sewn in stretchy undersides; G1000 everywhere else blocks the wind and is durable for leaning and laying without worrying about tears.
Warmer Climate Jacket
First of all I may be biased because I got this jacket with a good deal percentage off. It is described as a summer jacket but Sweden is pretty cold and climate varies. I have not had it that long but it seems to work in temperatures between high 40s to low 60s F, which in my region is Fall, Spring, or even Winter. It has more breathable back panel and vents for cooling but even then it will be too warm when hiking in 60 degree weather. It seems very tough and looks a bit like something issued by a military, especially with the "light olive" color. It is not bulky and is easy to pack up. The zipper was a bit finicky when I first got it but it works fine after using it more. I would recommend a lighter color if you are really using it in warm climates because darker colors do make a big difference for temperature. I usually wear medium but small actually fit me better.
Fantastic jacket
This jacket does a fantastic job of providing insulation from the wind. Keeps you comfortable by blocking and diverting the wind. Also lightweight and breathable enough to comfortably wear without getting hot or sweaty. I usually wear a Large or even an XL, but a Medium fit me perfectly. I'm also tall, and the length of this jacket fit me very well. Would absolutely recommend it!
Great jacket for summer hiking and fishing
Absolutely fantastic summer jacket. I use this as my summer shell in the Colorado Rockies and have trusted it on many summer backpacking and fishing trips. I waxed this up heavily and now it doesn’t absorb any water and dries almost instantly. Water will get through the jacket in heavy rain but I have hiked for hours in drizzle and remained warm and dry. Ventilation is king with this jacket and I often use it fly fishing to protect from bugs and sun. As a part of my fishing I often end up off trail squeezing through bushes and this jacket shows no signs of wear after a full spring and summer season, so the durability is also spot on.
Excellent multi-purpose jacket
I bought this on the spot once I realized it existed. I hmm'd and haw'd at the price for a while and finally decided to pull the trigger. Reasons for initial excitement: - Been in the market for a GOOD multipurpose shell jacket for a while. - The hood is EXCELLENT. Very adjustable, very good fit, very good coverage. I love the wire reinforced brim and the way the brim can be deployed to act as a sun shade or if it's raining, or pushed back so it's out of your way, and it stays there. - The sleeve length and torso length are perfect. Draw cords at either side let me get it exactly as snug as I like it around my waist. The drop-tail grabs around my butt and keeps the jacket in place while walking. I can easily push it up to be around my waist if I prefer and it more or less stays in place there, as well. - The sleeves are just large enough to accommodate layering underneath, and without layers can (eventually, with some work) be pushed to my elbow, for instance when I'm using this jacket to keep bugs out when it's warm outside. - The two big pockets are BIG and handy. The two vents allow you access to the pockets of whatever you're using as a layer underneath. - Stretchy fabric on the sides under the arms and the back is breathable and cool against the skin - The construction of the shoulder is unlike anything I've seen in a jacket and lends itself to completely unhindered mobility, working overhead, etc - The double zip, which is left-handed, while initially frustrating and slow to use, now makes perfect sense and I wouldn't have it any other way. The zipper was not so good but it broke in nicely and got easier once I put a little wax on it. Why 4 stars? - The "locks" at either side for the drawcord are placed in such a way that the left side is constantly bothering me and the right side sometimes bothers me. - After less than a year of use, holes are forming along the bottom, on the inside of the hem from using the drawcord to cinch it around my waist; the use of elastic cord is rather primitive to achieve a customizable hem and this G-1000 doesn't take well to being constantly scrunched. - The stitching that connects the stretch panels to the G-1000 is EVER SO SLIGHTLY off in some spots which leads to unusual bunching. - The elbow is a constant point of itching, moreso when it was new; they put the seam from the stretch fabric to the G-1000 RIGHT where your elbow joint tends to make contact. I paid full price for this jacket and I don't regret it. It's marked down quite a bit now and it's a great deal! Things it's good/not good at: Good to wear while out walking when it's just a little cool, or on the warm side but very windy. Good to wear while bushwhacking through thick brush. Not good in really any kind of rain for any period of time; even when fully waxxed up, it is NOT a rainjacket. It works pretty well in the snow as long as you're good about shaking off the snow from time to time before it melts in. Kinda wish it came in more color options :)
Game changer.
This was my first Fjallraven purchase, and i'm very happy with it overall. It solves for me one of the big maybe the biggest problem in trekking/hiking, being hot and sweaty moving and wearing a pack. In summer once i start moving even wearing a t-shirt in the old PFAS-PFC ridden oil based jackets i feel like i'm in a steam room wearing a garbage bag. This sucker breaths and breaths well, the mesh on the sleeves and the back panel, game changers. Make no mistake this jacket is made for movement, and I wouldn't advise wearing it in cold weather for a variety of reasons. I read other reviewer say they wax and bam their G-1000 jacket is waterproof. This has not quite been my experience but i'm wondering if it's maybe me, the way i'm doing it. But, its close, my core stays dry its only the sleeves that sometimes water would bleed through, but hey, the plastic jackets that claim to be waterproof do too and your wet anyway from the inside! The hood, rocks, love the adjustments, length is good but the sleeves are way too long, i have to fold them under or they hang below my hands. Only reason we are not five stars, is where the vents are, they are big and excellent vents but why on earth they are right next to the pockets with zippers the exact same length is beyond me? I frequently reach down to vent only to open my pocket or want to open my pocket then grab the vent zipper. They should move them a tad further apart and make the opening on the pocket shorter or lower. Im 5’8 190 lb’s and wear a medium which over all fits great except the sleeves.
Best jacket for wearing a pack
Ive learned after decades in the wilds of Alaska that no one product fits every need. For any effort wearing a pack in warmer weather this IS the jacket and I've owned several brands and models from off the shelf to custom made. Why? The promise of breathability and waterproof has never been truly realized, staying dry is a myth, drying out is not. This jacket breaths better than any jacket i've ever owned, you can feel the difference. The mesh under the arms and especially the back are a game changer. You know how it is, you're skiing or hiking and you take off your pack and it's soaked with sweat. With a little effort that doesn't happen with this jacket and even if you get little moist once you've shed your pack this dries quick. The rock solid warranty of this jacket and all that Fjallraven offers blows away the competition, free repairs, and waxing and lifetime guarantee? Anyone else do that? I love that you can adjust just how much water resistance you want for your season and climate. Do a good job of waxing with the right wax and this jacket sheds water as good or maybe better than a laminate without all the sweat. Cons, the sleeves are a little long. and it's cut a little snugger than im used to but I got use to it, it's clearly for active nordic people who are tall, vikings! The vent and the pocket are a little too close and the zippers are right next to each other which can get a little confusing on which one you're grabbing. Pros, durability, if you're in brush thus will hold up much better than laminate. Good for the environment, no PFCs organic cotton and recycled nylon. better breathability. Adaptive, if you live in say Flagstaff maybe not as much wax, if you live in the PNW or here in Southern Alaska more is better. Rock solid warranty even after one year. The only reason it's not five stars are the little things I stated but function is top notch.
