I don’t want to wear anything else!
These things are amazing. Sometimes I forget they’re even on. I am the absolute worst when it comes to any type of shoe. I seem to get rubbing and blisters no matter what. However, these have no hot spots for me. The heel and the ball of the foot have enough flexibility to feel barefoot and enough protection to walk on rocks. They are very durable as well. I hike, run, and lift weights in them. I put a lot of stress on the straps and there’s no sign of wear.
Great shoe and good introduction to barefoot shoe
This shoe came out better than expected. I got them at 25% off and ordered the olive and black colors. The olive is really cool in person. It's like a sandstone color with a hint of light olive green. Some people may not like the design of these but I actually do. This comes from someone who typically wears ultraboosts. This is my first barefoot shoe and are generally recommended as such for most people. They're really comfortable. They feel like slippers when you have them. If this your first jump into barefoot shoes take it easy. Start with walks then work your way to trails and running. If you don't walk a lot as your normal routine your transition will be harder due to your body having less time to adjust to these and your muscles having to adjust to a different style of movement. I walk 5-6 miles a day in society's typical modern shoe and these shoes took me about a week to get used to. My calves burned for most of that week as my legs adjusted to more of a mid foot and toe foot strike almost all the time from a heel to toe strike almost all the time. The first day or two I had to really concentrate on making sure I was promoting that mid foot to toe strike by leaning forward more and using my core and shoulders to make that movement more prominent and easier in my steps. Once you get this down it's pretty easy to wear these shoes and your muscles will start to adapt and get stronger. They are really comfortable shoes and the hype you hear about thee type of shoes just might be 100% true.
Falling apart within 4 months.
Packable, light weight, comfortable BUT short lifespan. Upon receiving these where my only footwear for a 1-week trip with no break-in. I walked daily 3-7 miles or more, on easy trails and city streets. Used them kayaking. They did change my stride without any heel padding, but remained comfortable on light to moderate terrain. The only discomfort was grit and small pebbles getting that needed to be removed every once in a while, usually after walking through water. The softer colored material between the toe and heal pads started abrading very quickly, showing significant wear after that first week. It almost shreds. Since then I have worn these sandals mostly in the house and some walks around town with one rocky hikes in NJ. At four months of wear the foot pad started separating. I glued it back with shoe goo, using clamps. This lasted only a couple of weeks before starting to separate again. At $80 I would not recommend these due to the short lifespan of the shoe. REI would not accept a return as they had been used "extensively."
Very comfortable
After walk 8 miles in these sandals I have to say thank you for a great shoe. I am a avid hiker and these sandals held up and my feet are so happy
unbelievable comfort
fit and comfort excellent, however wearing out very fast, worn for 14 days while holiday in Malta(averaged 10-12,000 steps/day) and sole very worn already. Also found to be slippery on smooth stone steps. not sure if good value for money due to wear rate…but best open shoes for comfort, no blisters, rubbing etc.
The Z's are INCREDIBLY LIGHT and functional.
Form follows function. The Z-Trail EV's function is most excellent. For many years I preferred toe post huarache style truly minimalist sandals for running ultra marathons up to 100 miles and the Z-Trails were often my favorite walking/errand and post ultra sandals. I regularly run trails in this new model. They are great, although for technical terrain or slippery conditions, trekking poles are helpful. For extremely steep slopes, the lack of a toe post may allow more slippage of the foot on the outsole than you want. Generally I love running any surface in the Z-Trail EVs. During the early months of the pandemic, I experimented with much heavier running in the Z's. The new Z-Trail EVs are a nice improvement over the prior model, but kept all of the best features.
Garbage
Break super easy, got out of van in peru and stepping onto curb from collectivo ripped my sandal strap after only having them for less than a week. This is the 2nd pair of these that broke in this way. SUPER flimsy if you actually use them at all. they look cool but they are not meant to be used in any sort of practical context.
Almost perfect all-purpose sandal
I wore these sandals hiking, backpacking, commuting on my bike, on vacation, snorkeling, and just around town. I really enjoyed the fit and the simplicity of the straps, and how minimal they feel while providing only what I need on my feet. My one complaint is that the sole becomes very slippery against the foot when wet, causing my feet to slide around on each step after creek crossings or rain or mud, etc. I couldn't quite get the straps to secure my feet well enough to not slip while still feeling comfortable. I think my feet aren't quite wide enough for the design (I would describe my feet as average width low volume). This sliding eventually caused the rubber post holding the strap by my pinky toe to snap off. Luckily the straps could be reconfigured to last me the final days of my backpacking trip.
The Best Minimal Trail Sandal
The Z-Trail EVs are by far the best minimal rail sandals on the market. I wore Chacos before Xero Shoes entered the market, but the thickness of the Chaco Z sandals started hurting my lower legs while hiking. I eventually had to stop wearing them due to shin splints and foot pain. Enter the Z-Trail EV. The sandals are zero drop from heel-to-toe and very flexible to allow natural foot movement with every step. The outsole traction is phenomenal as well, and Xero offers an unbeatable 5,000 mile sole warranty. The one and only con I have with this sandal is that my feet slide around a bit when they're wet from hiking through creeks and doing water activities in them.
Good, not great
I've had these for 2 summers now. Very comfortable and surprisingly stylish. Great for light trail and short duration usage. Two main disadvantages: first, the insoles become very slippery when wet. This makes those really uncomfortable for any water sports, especially any that may require balance (which is a real pity, because they would otherwise be a great option). Second, while they are great for travelling given their slim profile and good looks, the thin sole does make them less practical when doing a lot of walking / standing on concrete/pavement. A tad more cushion could solve that, but this is a personal preference.
