I have been running with fairly minimal running shoes, but these were a little more minimal than perhaps my feet are ready for. I had gotten into the routine of mostly running on a treadmill and my previous pair of shoes were a bit less minimal than these. The shoes I had been running in also began to fall apart faster as covid-19 drove me outside. The new Merrills are so thin that I am developing callouses on my feet. I think this may be a good thing long term, but I am coming to the conclusion I can't run in them every day until my feet adjust. The shoes fit like a dream and I set a personal record the first time I wore them.
This is the sixth pair of Merrells I have owned and I am pleased more than ever with this new edition of the Vapor Glove. I’ve previously owned both Trail and Vapor Gloves and this pair might be my favourite. As a movement coach and physical recovery specialist, I actually use this pair almost exclusively inside. I was very happy to feel how much detail I get from the floor through the shoe and it has helped me in both my own training (strength and movement based) as well as while simply wearing them and coaching my clients. They have also been a great tool for spaces where I want to train barefoot but floor conditions might not be ideal for that.
Ordered a size 11 as both my Merrell boots and Trail Glove 4's are 11 and fit perfectly. The Vapor Glove 4 size 11 is a little bit too big which can be fixed by fastening the laces a bit tighter than normal which makes them less comfortable. I was hoping for the sock like fit of the Trail Glove 4 with a more minimalist design but that's not what this is. On top of that the seam is coming undone at the toe (check the picture) and I've only had them for a week. That's a 5k walk once a day for a week on a dirt path. So I doubt these shoes would hold up for more than a couple months with every day use on any sort of trail. Although I dislike the Trail Glove 5, I would recommend that for a barefoot running/everday use shoe over this one.
This is a great all around shoe, I've worn it for running trail running hiking, wearing it out on the town etc. I chose the darker so they blended in a little bit more and they are great. Think I got over 200 miles on my first pair and have had 2 now, plus one of the trail version. These are great for getting into the barefoot style and taught me lots about form and proper technique and am a much better off runner. I used to have uneven wear (from left to right) on the back of the heel of my logger style boots and after wearing these for a while(and a new pair of loggers) it seems my ankles/legs have realigned to some extent because they wear completely normal/flat now and my overall performance/ flexibility/mobility and balance are much improved and I definitely owe a lot of it to this shoe! Get on the barefoot life you'll never go back! Especially for half the price of a similar styled running shoe!
The vapor glove, like the trail glove, has little cushioning, with all the pros and cons that come with that: excellent ground feel, but not so much in the way of protection from pointy rocks. If you looking for a good minimalist shoe, this one fits the bill: very light and flexible. My only complaint: I wish the toe box were a bit roomier. I ordered a size 9, which I typically wear, and it is a bit snug. It looks and feels quite durable for such a minimal shoe. I had a pair of trail gloves in the past, and I put 700 miles of trail running on them before the sole wore too thin. By the look and feel of it, I am hoping that the vapor glove will also be a durable shoe.
Product is awesome if you like that barefoot feel. I love running barefoot, but many races don't allow it, nor does the military. These are pretty close to being shoeless. Super comfortable, super lightweight. The only cons I have are they are a bit spacey in the toe box, run large (which is fixable, but I never got around to exchanging), and the lacing is annoying to play with, but I slipknot all my shoes. I would highly recommend these to people. I had run in Mizuno's for years, but they stopped making a barefoot 0 drop, so I switched to Merrell and found these. My 4 out of 5 was strictly bc of sizing, but honestly, if i could have given a 9.5 or of 10, i would have.
For a wide toe box shoe, this one fits me very nicely all around. It hugs my foot and heel just right. And the toes are snug yet with just enough room to be comfortable for long walks. I use these walking between 6 to 10 miles every day on City Street sidewalks mostly. These shoes are not good for uneven surfaces where there may be stones or sharp points that will be stepped on. You will feel these every time. Better to get a shoe with a protection sole plate if planning to walk rough trails. I'm happy for the vibram sole giving me a good, solid grip. But they do wear out in a few short months (approx 750 miles). I've tried many styles of shoe but always come back to this one.
I have been walking hundreds of miles in these shoes for a few years now. I like to feel the trail or sidewalk or road as I walk along, but need the protection the soles and uppers provide over just bare feet. These do not have a sole plate, so sharp items like rocks and roots can result in pain if not seen and avoided. The Vibram sole does provide traction on the ground. The shoe is lightweight which is nice for walking miles at a time without weighing down the feet. They feel snug and comfortable. I wear a thin toe sock from Injinji with them - a perfect match. I recommend these for the person that does not need or want the padded sole and does want to be in tune with the trail.
I wish this shoe came in a wide size (W). If it did, I would have bought my standard size--a 12. I had to buy a 13 in order to get it on my wide foot. That means there's about 1 to 1-1/2 inches too much shoe at the toe. It's okay, though, for my expectations. I bought these for bike-riding shoes. I found that this shoe was so comfortable that I would have bought a 12 W (if they made the size) for a shoe that I could wear every day. These shoes are very comfortable, but the fit is not a good one for anything other than bike-riding. Walking is awkward because of the extended length. If only Merrell would get on the stick and make their whole range of shoes in a wider width.
This shoe has a lot going for it. First, price, very affordable. After that is a long list of features that make this shoe excellent. The look of the shoe is good and for an athletic item to work well and look nice is great, very subjective. the shoe feels very nice and give the whole "bare foot" effect. If one does some research the bare foot idea can be understood. The Vibrant rubber works really well and the shoe packs well.
