Love the removable sleeves, Durability not so good
I have a number of PEARL iZUMi cycling clothes and have always had a good experience with them, until now. I love the windbreaking coverage this jacket provides and the zip off sleeves; it makes this jacket perfect for those days when it starts out cold and warms up when you have to shed clothes. However, it just did not hold up. After about 10 wearings the snaps that hold the sleeves in place ripped out where they were sewn in. Pearl Izumi needs a serious product improvement here. Compared to a similar Gore product I own, the Pearl jacket is just not very durable. I returned the jacket for a full refund from REI, no questions asked.
Not just all show, built to go.
Nice color of blue but the fabric felt very light and I wondered if it would live up to the claim. Worried no more. Jacket provided needed protection against strong ocean head winds and temps in the low 50's. When rolling in 70-degree temps I simply unzipped the sleeves and enjoyed the cooling breeze against my arms. Fit is relaxed (not a race cut) but no wind flap even at 40 mph. Jacket has good quality stitching and enough vents to prevent the sauna-effect. Zippers work smoothly and don't catch adjoining fabric. The XL size fit my 6'0" and 195-lbs frame nicely. Even with barn-door shoulders, sleeves reached over base of gloves when stretched out over the drops.
Wear this in screaming yellow to be seen!
I just purchased the current version of this jacket (2024) to replace one that was probably at least 10 years old. I’m 5’8” tall and 190# and the large fits okay. At most I think I could wear a cycling jersey and a lightweight capilene long sleeve t shirt underneath it. Compared to my old jacket, this one does not have microfiber inside the collar for comfort. It is lacking a zippered breast pocket. It has many fewer reflective details. It is lacking a hanging loop in the collar. I replaced my old jacket because it had faded from use. I wear the jacket as a windbreaker, and I wear it to be seen. When it rains I wear a Marmot Precip rain jacket, instead.
One of my favorite windbreakers
I ride my bike about 50 miles a week and this is a great windbreaker. I actually have this, or close facsimiles thereof, in three colors: red; blue/green mix; and hi viz yellow. The one I just got is the hi viz. It does the trick! Pearl Izumi is a great brand, and everything I've had from them has held up very well. These jackets, though they counter the wind effectively, are light enough to wear in the summer heat and, when folded up, fit in my saddle bag. They're ideal for layering and -- a "must" in my case -- the side pockets hold my iPhone securely without zipping (as long as I'm riding on smooth surfaces, I'd probably zip the pocket for mountain biking). Overall, I reach for these jackets a lot!
Rear Pocket is not Sewn In on Bottom
This jacket has a pretty big design flaw. Pearl IZUMi didn't sew the bottom or sides of the rear pocket to the the rest of the jacket. Unfortunately, if you have anything slightly heavy like car keys and or wallet, they will hang freely below the rest of the jacket when slightly bent over, The problem is when sit on you saddle you actually sit on the rear pocket filled with car keys and wallet instead. To fix this you must stand up again and swat the rear pocket out of the way before you can sit down. Plus, It makes you look like you cannot dress yourself because your underwear is just hanging out for everyone to see. My wife has the previous version of the same jacket and rear pocket is sewn to the jacket all the way around. It is a much better jacket.
Screaming yellow bike jacket
This jacket fits me well and is comfortable with just a tee shirt under it on some of our cool night rides. The yellow goes along with our group uniforms which are either bright yellow or yellow green. The sleeves zip off if I get too warm. What's not to like?
Solid Performance
Just finished a ride in 40 degrees with wind and damp. Added this jacket to the same kit I wore in 43 degrees a few days ago and went from chilled to comfortable on today's ride. No rain to speak of so can't comment on that but seems like it will help in a light rain. Sleeves are a bit odd to remove but functional. Not recommended to do so while riding. I normally wear XL. I upsized to XXL so an insulated jersey would be comfortable under this, but was too big. Returning for the XL version, but getting the same model.
My favorite jacket
Great jacket. I use it daily when it gets a little bit colder outside. I just wish it would be couple of inches longer in the back. I'm taller and in order to cover my back I had to get a size bigger, so it's a little bit floppy in the wind. Not a deal breaker, but I would rather have it bit tighter. It stops the wind, but it's also pretty breathable. Perfect for the fall/spring rides. It will protect you from the drizzle for 15-20 minutes. (it's not 100% waterproof) With warmer layer underneath I've been using it even at 0°C.
High visibility and quality
High quality construction, good fit, love the double ended main zipper, convertible sleeve removal is easy and leaves a well functioning vest. Only issue is size of sleeve ends. Pearl Izumi must think that XL frames have small hands - tight fit to put on. Have the same problem with their XL gloves.
Love the features, beware if you have big hands
This jacket is definitely HI-vis! It is form fitting so there is no material flapping in the breeze as you ride. It doesn’t ride up on my shoulders (as my previous jacket did) and I can see behind me (zipper almost fully up) in my helmet-mounted mirror. With the zipper partway down, I can still see behind me but getting the full view (no jacket showing) just takes a minor head tilt. The only down side is the snugness of the wrist elastic (the elastic is not too snug while being worn, only when putting on or taking off the jacket). I usually wear an XL glove and my hands barely fit through the wrist. Taking the jacket off requires removing my wrist heart rate monitor first and sliding a finger into the elastic to help guide it over my wrist. If the wrist was 3/8” more snug, I’d have had to return the jacket. That said, the quality and benefits far out way snug wrist elastic.
