Comfortable and Easily Adjustable
I have been riding with this helmet for around 4 months now and I am a big fan. It is lightweight and very well ventilated, even when wearing a bandana underneath to absorb sweat, my head never gets hot. Despite being lightweight, this helmet feels very sturdy and durable. While it feels durable and impact worthy, luckily I have not had a chance to test how it holds up in a bad crash! The click adjust system, and the buckles on the straps are easy to adjust to get that just-right-fit and it stays in place without the need to cinch down super tight. Unlike other helmets I've tried, this one does not bounce or move around while you crash through rock gardens or over technical terrain. Overall a good helmet for the price, would definitely recommend.
Most excellent helmet
My husband and I have not worn a helmet in years while we do encourage our kids to wear helmets. this year my husband got me a new bike and we started taking more frequent family bike rides. A few weeks back for my birthday we were going on a family ride. Ss we were getting ready to leave my daughter handed me a present. I opened it and was surprised that it was a smith convoy helmet in yellow to match my bike. As I tried it on i was surprised how easy it was to adjust and fit. There was ample adjustment to get the perfect fit. After our ride I realized it was much better vented than the helmet i wore years ago. The vizor really helped with the sun and the knob adjustkept it from moving around. No complaints here
Spared me another concussion
Took a nasty slam on a dirt jump, cracked my helmet and crumpled the plastic and was on crutches for two weeks. I bought the same one to replace that one because it protected me so well. Couldn’t give a better recommendation than that. Side note: MIPS is the real deal. After sliding out last year and spending months rehabbing a concussion from slamming my head on the pavement before I knew about MIPS. A well made helmet with mips is one of the best investments you can make. It matters.
Very comfortable
Both my wife and I purchased these helmets at the same time. My wife bought the small size (her head measures 54 cm) and I bought the Medium ( my head is about 57.5 cm). The helmets were easily adjusted with the little round crank in the back. I haven’t had a helmet fit so comfortably before. There were no tight areas as I have experienced tith any of the previous 3 that I have owned. Although we are road cyclists, we find the “brim/visor” type of helmets drastically reduces the suns glare that always would flow around and pass the sunglasses.
My friend crashed and hit his head. Got me testing
When I put this helmet on, and I tighten down the dial in the back, it sits securely. with the chin strap secured, if I was to hit the ground with the front or side of my face my helmet would easily slide off the back off my head and ends up behind my head like a hood. Even if the chin strap is uncomfortably tight, still slides off the back of my head. I used to have a simular smith visor helmet with a more robust strap set up that was way safer.
Safety Issue
I really wanted to like this helmet, but I'll be returning it shortly. It has a serious safety issue- the helmet's tensioner and strap buckles loosen as you ride. There are several other reviews complaining of this same problem. I noticed it on my second ride... I have to continually retighten my helmet throughout my rides. I tried looking through the user manual to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong...but it appears to be a design flaw. Hopefully someone doesn't get hurt.
Great Helmet, Poor User Manual
Great helmet from Smith, fits as expected and color matches the REI website. Four stars because Smith neglected to include the following fitment info from their website in the product manual: "Your helmet should feel snug but not tight and should stay put if you shake your head up and down and back and forth. Next, buckle the chin strap, and adjust it so that if you open your mouth wide, your helmet presses slightly into the top of your head. You should be able to fit two fingers between the buckled helmet chin strap and your chin." The text font and illustrations in the manual are so small I had to locate a pair of reading glasses!
Size up if you're on the edge
Note on sizing - my noggin is 22" exactly and the size small wasn't big enough. Way too small, actually. So if you're on the edge of the size, size-up. Otherwise very nice quality helmet.
Love my new helmet!
I have several helmets, mostly Bontrager. But a friend of mine in Oregon swears by Smith helmets (I live in Ohio). I wanted a helmet that was smart looking, so I decided to look at the Smith brand. I wanted one with a visor, and found a color that matched parts of the color on my gravel bike. This helmet feels great…very lightweight and airy. It sits down on my head well. I definitely wanted MIPS, as the last two times I have fallen, I hit my head pretty hard on the ground. This Convoy is a quality helmet, and my new favorite and go to helmet, regardless of what bike I am riding.
Great All Day!
We have been sporting smith eyewear for over a decade now! Love the sunglasses, even wear the Elite line of eye protection for work...so I was comfortable diving in to their supply of bike helmets for our new lids. The Convoy was for my wife. She doesn't like to be overstated or draw attention. She wants it to perform and not do so with a whole lot of frills. Mission accomplished with the Convoy. It is comfortable, not feeling excessively weighted, well ventilated, good overall protection, and comes in black. Are there other entries with a lower cost point? Yes, there always is...but we usually make sacrifices in quality for economy. This was less expensive than others, but it never made us feel like we lost out on the investment. It looks great, wears easy, and instills more confidence for when you encounter the unforeseen. It's a helmet...and for what you pay...it is a nicely equipped, easily adjustable, comfortable helmet from a trusted brand.
