Great Beam
Most lights tend to flare out only giving you close visibility, but this beam somehow covers your immediate vicinity and far ahead. I'm so glad I found this light after many purchases with beams of lesser capability at the same price. My only issue is with the time of charge being at around an hour and a half with the light on low, but less than an hour on medium or high. If you plan to ride all night, it would be smart to put on a second light for good measure to make sure you make it home. To make the light last, you can ride with it flashing, but that totally messes with your depth perception.
Good lighting, bad charger, died young
The housing is solid, but Bontrager lights suffer from bad charger ports. The port is very difficult to access, requiring you to push back a rubber plug (that eventually suffers from fatigue and falls off) and use a very slim USB plug (not just any micro B). This one died at 1 year 3 days (just outside the return window!) when the USB port went crunch. I can hear it rattling around in there now—and it looks like there was nothing backstopping it, so the solder joints were taking mechanical strain. Really bad design. My previous Bontrager, an older model, had some of the same issues with the charging port, although not as bad, which I think means they're getting worse. That one died when the button rubber corroded and fell off, though. Until I see evidence that they're learning from their mistakes, I don't think I'm getting another Bontrager.
Battery will fail
Just want to warn everyone that these lights are unfortunately fast fashion. After 4 years, mine can no longer charge. Either the charger or battery are busted. It's never had moisture in the port, just won't charge after the summer. I took it to my local trek store and they said It can't be warrantied after 2 years and can't be repaired, that I should take it to Home Depot to have it thrown away since it has a Lithium Ion battery. I'm going to try to repair it, but I recommned you use your money on a brand that will actually repair their product and make product that lasts longer than a few years
Great for Commuting
The Good: excellent build quality in the light and mount, there are two yellow light ports on either side to add side marking viability, even low beam is brighter than most other lights, strobe effect is great for daytime visibility with cars and pedestrians. While you can charge the light while it is on, the provided micro USB charge cable is only 8" long and the light is no longer water resistant with the port cover open. The Not So Good: take care not to loose the provided micro USB charge cable. The charge port is deep inset on the underside of the light and most standard USB cables will be too chunky to fit in charge port. Note: the light uses the case to cool the LED, don't be surprised after a long ride that the grey top shell is noticeably warm. Hopefully the next generation will come with the easier to use micro USB-C connection.
won't charge anymore, no way to replace battery
This was fabulous light...for 2 years. The warranty is 2 years. After that it no longer charges. I got in touch with Trek (who makes it) and they said not only is the battery in this unit not replaceable, but that they do not make any lights with replaceable, rechargeable batteries. This is 2023. We expect environmentally-conscious products and dealers. Too late to return it to REI. I'll be searching for a light that has a replaceable, rechargeable battery. The other reviews commenting on how hard it is to plug this one is are 100% correct and it's also ergonomically very challenging to remove the light from the holder. I ended up taking the holder off my bike instead of attempting to use their failed lever engineering. Problem with that work around is that it makes getting to the charge port even harder. Not going to purchase anything from Bontrager again.
bad season for batteries
Got this light March 2021 and have loved it since. Super bright, decent battery life for everything other than max brightness, compact and low profile. Just as the last few reviews, my battery gave out on me recently. No response when plugged in, button does nothing. Glad I got 2.5 years from it, but disappointed it didn’t last longer.
Believe the reviews when they say this is junk
Probably was only used 4-5 times. Now it won't accept a charge. completely dead, worthless. Piece of junk for $100
Great when working, but broke after a year
The light is nice and bright, it's easy to change settings while biking, and has a low profile. When it works it's a great light. But it stopped working completely after only a year. Disappointing for such an expensive light.
Expensive for something that won't last
Product failed one month after warranty period ended. For the price this just isn't worth it. Not to mention the ewaste I now have to deal with.
Not for urban night riding
Got the light for mainly use in urban streets day and night. Solid build quality. Turns out 1000 lumens is too bright for me. Also turned out that after charging one time, it no longer worked. Unable to charge via the micro USB no matter what cable/charger pairing I tried. Returned it, and decided to go with a different brand and half the lumens. I miss having better options for lights that don't require charging after every other ride. Minus 1 star for usb charging. Minus 1 star for product failure.
