Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I have been wearing the previous model of the Altra Duo with great delight. This new version has zero padding in the heel (( to cut costs ?? to reduce weight by minuscule amount ?? )). This shoe is not comfortable for me. I wore only once and returned.
WOW! I'm NOT previously a competitive runner, so 5 miles is a long distance for me in my late 50s. Have been most satisfied with wide width Hoka Bondi for cush on the dirt trails, albeit the Duo beats it hands down - totally rocks! Roomy toe box and footbed. HIGHLY recommend, especially for those whose feet are aging and would like a well-designed shoe at a fair price.
I began wearing the duo 7/11. It's been only six weeks and the soles have worn down significantly. The rubber seal near the big toe on my left shoe is already coming away. I walk/jog in my hilly neighborhood on asphalt/cement sidewalks. I typically gain 430-450 feet of elevation. Since 7/11 I have logged 118 miles. I expected the shoes to last at least 240 miles I have been very happy with Altra road running shoes in the past. This is my 4th pair. Perhaps the duo has design flaws or it's the wrong shoes for my terrain.
I have been running and racing with Altra Duo for 2 years (keep purchasing the original design over and over). I hesitated to order the new 1.5 because of reviews. I finally ordered a pair but unfortunately reviews were correct. I ran easy 4 miles in them and got a blister in the back of my ankle shortly after starting. The shoes are, as usual, super comfortable. I love how responsive they are and how well they protect my feet (no black toes since I switched to the Duo!). Please fix the design!!!
I hesitate to give these a number of stars because I didn't take them out for a run. The heel of these shoes is very different from the other Altra shoes I have. It is made of a really thin mesh material with some light padding. You can see in the picture that it looks like the heel is set way back and it really is. It did not fit my foot at all so I returned them. As with other Altras I went up half a size.
That aggressive angle you see on the heel of the shoe in the picture? Yeah it's for real, and I have no idea why the shoe is designed this way. Altras have been my new go-to work, run, and hike shoe since a foot injury last year, and they're usually super comfortable out of the box and true to size. This weird heel design easily adds a half-size and has no benefit I can see. Returning.
Love these shoes! They are very light and have great cushion for running on roads and sidewalks. I do not have any problems with them biting my heals but I do tighten them so that my heal does not slide. There is plenty of toe room and they do not bother the starting of bunions. This is my second pair, the first were the Duo 1 and these fit much better.
I am an Altra wearer: I wear the Paradigm and the Torin. I have really loved the Duo -once I discovered to order a half size smaller than the previously mentioned models. That said, I am not a fan of the flimsy heel design of the Duo 1.5. I got my first-ever Altra blister. I superglued a thin piece of silicon into the back of the heel and solved that issue. I am a fan of the thin tongue (it is cooler and I live in the south) but it does take a little extra time to put the shoe on and insure that there aren't any wrinkles. Since I'm a runner and not a triathlete worried about quick transitions, I have decided that the great comfort while running is worth the extra effort in putting the shoe on. Altra, the heel cushion does not have to be thick and heavily padded to fix the problem! I would recommend this shoe with a warning about the heel. I'm ordering a second pair and I'm planning to glue in a heel cushion - ran over 26 miles in them last week with happy heels.
These were my first pair of Altra Duos. I researched running shoes quite a bit in effort to fix my chronic bruised toe nails. I run about 5-15 miles per week mostly on road or gravel trails. Historically I have worn Nike Pegs. I trained for a half marathon this past summer and more of my toes bruised and got worse. I have tried many different kinds of socks and increased my shoe size which did not alleviate the problem. I was convinced that the extra toe space Altras provided could potentially solve my problem. I was excited to receive the Duos. They are super comfy underfoot and toe space is great. The reason for the one star review is the zero padding at the heel collar. There is the seam at the heel of the shoe, it's covered with basically a thin layer of clear sealant and that's it. It's hard, uncomfortable and shred the skin on both heels through my running socks in less than an hour of walking around in them. I've never had to break in a running shoe and I'm not about to start so these are going back.
This was my first pair of Altras and I love them so much I am buying them again. Good cushioning and a nice wide toe box. I have noticed some wear/holes developing where the fabric bends but that started months ago without impacting the overall comfort and utility of the shoe.
