Survived 3000km Te Araroa & still asking for more
Picked these up for a few bucks at a resupply section and they’ve held up extraordinarily well including my recent thru hike of Te Araroa known for its mud and rocky trails. Some stitching has come loose at the top connection on one but that’s just patina as far as I’m concerned. Considering the abuse I’ve submitted them through, I’m confident they will work fine for anyone needing less than burly nylon gaiters for proper bushwalks or snow expeditions.
Simple and Functional
I preface this review by mentioning that I may have a size larger than I actually need (L/XL on a 10 Men's shoe), but I do not think that contributed to my overall rating of these gaiters. I mainly used these on my Lone Peak 3.5's, but after using them I am sure they would work fine on any Altra Shoe since they are all designed with a similar gaiter system. If you are wondering about any other shoe, the main way these function is with an inverse hook on the front of the gaiter and a Velcro back. I know some Brooks shoes may accommodate these gaiters just fine, but I would double check to make sure! The best part about these gaiters is how simple they are to use. Just make sure you have them on before putting your shoe on and then it takes a few seconds to get them secure and in place. Super simple if you are needing to change shoes mid way through a race. There is honestly not much more to these then that! The inverse hook on the front is a good choice since it helps to prevent these from coming undone on the front gaiter loop on the shoe. It would be nice to have something that locks on to that front gaiter trap since in deeper snow I did find it coming undone. I don't know if that was due to the sizing being a little large and that does interfere with how easy they are to switch shoes in. not sure on the Velcro durability yet, but right now it is holding up just fine. I Have not had an issue with snow or dirt getting into the shoes while wearing these and am excited to use them on race day since they seem to make everything easier with keeping out rocks and dirt. This is a super simple solution for trail running or hiking and I would easily recommend them with any Altra trail shoe.
Won't stay connected
I'm not sure what I'm doing differently than the folks who aren't having any issues with them. When I first put them on, I thought my hooks to the laces were on backwards - it just seemed the hook would go over the clip rather than under the clip. (Altra confirmed they were sewed in correctly) I used them on a 12-mile hike and sure enough the front clips on both came off about a dozen times before I finally stopped reattaching them. They still mostly did their jobs, but I could feel them bouncing up and down the whole time, which is annoying (to me). I'm using them on the Olympus 4s, which has its gaiter trap on the heel a little higher than where it looks like it falls on the lone peaks. Not sure if that's enough of a difference to prevent the toe hook from flapping off, but maybe? There's no way to keep the tension taut enough to prevent the hook from eventually unclipping itself.
Not a single rock in five weeks
I bought these to prevent small rocks from getting in my shoes, I wore them for five weeks straight 12 hours a day in the Sierras and not one rock or piece of debri, feet never got hot, you never have to stop to get that annoying stuff out of you shoes.
Simple and Effective
These are the first trail gaiters I’ve tried while running and hiking, and I will definitely keep using them! Pros: - Stayed in place with no issues - the hook attached to your shoelaces and stays put, and the Velcro sticks to the back of your shoe with no problems. Once the gaiters were in place, I never had to re-adjust them during my run. - Kept sand and pebbles out! - Light, comfortable fabric - not cumbersome or bulky. - Detaches easily from shoe when you’re done - the gaiter can be taken off your ankle after the shoe is removed so that no extra mud from your shoe gets on the inside of the gaiter. - Nice colors! Cons: - The gaiter attaches to the back of the shoe with velcro, and one side of the velcro is stuck to the shoe with adhesive, so you are limited to using these gaiters with one pair of shoes.
Depends on what you're looking for in a gaiter...
My first impression of the gaiters was great. They are comfortable and easy to fix on the shoe. They provide a velcro patch to stick to the heel of your shoe, and this does a good job of holding the gaiter in place. They also provide another patch of velcro to protect the one on the shoe when you aren't wearing the gaiters. I didn't have any trouble with the gaiter displacing when running regularly-the hook stayed attached in front. I think these would work well in dusty/rocky conditions. However, it's been very snowy where I live, so I tested them in snow. I found that snow easily got up under the gaiter and became trapped. If you buy these, you should also be very careful about removing the gaiter from the show. I accidentally pulled off the sticky velcro patch, and now have trouble getting it to stay fixed. These would be great if the velcro patch actually stuck-or more replacement patches were provided.
Good light gaiters for easy weather
Light-weight and easy to put on and take off. They're meant to work with Altra trail runners. There's an extra adhesive-velcro you can put on other shoes to use these with those as well, but I haven't tried that. These are not appropriate for really nasty conditions -- if they get wet, they get wet -- but they help keep splashed water/mud out of your shoes, and more importantly, they keep *pebbles and pine needles out*. As someone who tends to collect half the forest in their shoes out on the trail, these were great for keeping my shoes clear.
Great Item but the Packaging Causes Holes
Wanted to give everyone a heads up. These are really great and they are a perfect fit for my Lone Peaks. However, they are are attached to their display tag with a tagger gun. The material doesn't recover from that. Therefore, both gaiters come with 4 pin holes in them. I contacted the vendor and they confirmed that all of their gaiters are sold this way. If you are ok with patching up brand new gear, I highly recommend them. I just couldn't justify having to sew a brand new purchase.
Sturdier than I expected!
The Altra Trail Gaiters impressed me with their high quality material and construction. They proved more durable than I expected, despite the light weight of the fabric. They withstood multiple gouges and snags by low brush and twigs, without apparent damage. Although not waterproof the fabric quickly wicks water throughout the gaiter instead of holding it at one soggy spot. This means they can ultimately dry quickly. I have used the gaiters several times on rough unimproved forest trails with consistently good results. I highly recommend them.
Very poor durability, especially for large feet.
Don't get if you have large feet. I wear a size 13, the large size is supposedly for sizes 10-14 Both gaiters had large holes after the first day of hiking, the friction points with the side of the shoe rubbed through almost immediately. Picked up a pair of dirty girl gaiters and have no complaints.
