Good warmth but bad durability
I bought the hooded version (eggplant/purple) that tends to come in-and-out of stock here. Overall, a nice warm jacket that is lightweight. However, pilling is a problem after 10-12 uses with a backpack. SIZE/FIT: slim or Alpine fit. I'm 5'9" (162 pounds); 40 inch chest. I tried both a medium and large. The medium was definitely a snugger fit. The large was a bit too baggy on me where I thought air would escape from the bottom of my jacket. I think it does run true to size, but I had to get used to the slim fit. WARMTH: very good warmth. I wore a base layer, mid-weight fleece, and the ATherm jacket in 3degF-16degF weather in Hokkaido Japan in January/February. I didn't notice too much of a difference between my 700 fill down jacket and the ATherm. DURABILITY: average to poor. I've only worn the jacket about 10-12 times, each time carrying my laptop backpack (Professional Flight backpack; 29 liter capacity). I noticed some pilling on the outside of the jacket where the backpack is rubbing. MISCELLANEOUS: I love the thumbholes. Came in handy when I forgot my gloves.
Excellent Warm, Breathable construction
Great jacket but too tight for me around the torso. I'm 5'9 and 190 lbs. I'll be returning to try a size XL but the large should have fit according to the size chart.
Exceptional Comfort, Poor Fabric Durability
On a recent trip through Northern Europe, with outdoor temps ranging from the low 30’s to the high 50’s and with occasional light rain, this jacket was a godsend. The double layer construction — a wicking open weave polar fleece interior layer and a wind and light rain resistant outer layer — provide an amazing mix of lightweight warmth and temperature and moisture regulating comfort. The snug fitting hood, also Polartec lined, along with a drawstring hem and athletic fit, helped keep cold air out when temps dropped (I was comfortable into the lower 40’s over only a t-shirt). But the real magic here is that the jacket remains comfortable as temperatures rise due to the wicking and breathable construction. I was as comfortable sitting in 65-70 degree train cars as I was walking outside in blustery weather. This is unquestionably the most comfortable jacket I’ve ever owned. Design details are also spot-on, with zip hand pockets and a zip external chest pocket, a low-friction fabric lining in the sleeves (beneath the polartec) that makes slipping the jacket on and off a breeze while wearing long-sleeve shirts, and generous length sleeves with thumb loops that allow you to skip gloves in moderate weather. But there’s a catch, and it’s a big one. After only a few months of wear while typically carrying a lightweight backpack (during travel and the day-to-day commute), the exterior fabric is heavily pilling in several areas, and I expect that it will ultimately fail prematurely in a few areas. There’s inevitably a durability trade-off for such a lightweight, stretchable, and breathable fabric, though I’ve never owned another jacket, or outdoor garment really, that has shown wear so quickly. There is also slight pulling at the (polartec powerstretch?) cuffs, though given the thickness of this fabric I’m not concerned about them tearing or wearing through. To be clear, this is a very well made and high quality product overall, though I’d happily sacrifice just a little stretch or weight for better durability.
By far my favorite jacket.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m 5ft 11inches. 175lbs and I ordered a large. Couldn’t be more of a perfect fit. Not baggy, not tight. Arm length and overall length is perfect. I have worn this jacket day in and day out and still looks brand new. Used it on several hiking trips as well as on occasional morning running. It’s so comfortable and light. It keeps you decently warm but never overly hot. Perfect for morning and winter weather days as casual attire as well as out camping for a week. Great product. Surprised its not more popular.
A for the Atherm
This jacket works great over a t-shirt so you can feel the super softness of the Polartec Alpha. I like the thumb holes and different fabric at the hands too. The face fabric is tougher than most mid-layers and so it works well as an outer layer except in rain. Too bulky and heavy for backpacking compared to competitors though, so it's more of a casual or day-hike mid-layer. I have the hooded version too and love the snug "under helmet" hood - again the Polartec Alpha in the hood feels great on my head.
Great for Layering
I find this jacket fits very snug and athletic. 5'9" and 150lbs. Ordered a small. Easily layers under other jackets. Plan to use under a shell for skiing and around the city in the winter.
Warm and breathable
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The ATherm jacket is a well balanced mixture of warmth, breathable and light weight. I’ve been currently wearing the ATherm as a solo piece in temperature ranges of 35-50 degrees. Around the lower 40’s it retains the warmth and is slightly wind and water resistant. This does require delicate care to wash. It’s very light weight, which allows you to combine with heavy coats if needed and will regulate your body temperature.
Awesome jacket
(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) Loving this jacket. It is very comfortable. It breaths super well and keeps you warm in some surprisingly cold situations. It fits perfectly under a shell and also does well on its own. I prefer Polartec Alpha over fleece as I rarely overheat in it. It is a very superior jacket and functional is almost any situation.
Great Jacket
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Had this jacket for 5 days now. Cool temps, in the 40's. I wore it working on the range for 8 to 10 hrs a day, with nothing but a t-shirt underneath. Stayed comfortable the entire time, even in the rain. My new go to jacket!
Great jacket
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This jacket is warm, light and is perfect for both warm and colder temperatures. The material is great and flexible. Highly recommend it to anyone who loves to travel and outdoor activities.
