Crashed directly onto my face but am OK
The bad news: This helmet only lasted me two rides. The good news: When I crash-landed directly on my face, I was able to just walk it off. And I'm not exaggerating when I say I landed on my face. The first point of impact with the ground was directly to the front of this helmet. Does my face hurt? Yes. Would I have preferred not to crash? Absolutely. Did this helmet save me a trip to the emergency room? 100% 10/10 would recommend.
Uncomfortable if you have short hair
I really like this helmet but I have to return it since a design flaw in the adjustable rear headband makes it very uncomfortable for people with short hair. There are sharp little spikes that dig into the back of your head on the pads with ribs on them. You can see them in the helmet picture below the "IT" in Smith. The raised part of the grooves end in sharp spikes at the front. I don't know why the designers did this since other helmets I have have either smooth pads with rounded edges or no pads. I hope Smith fixes this design since I would really like to have one that doesn't feel like I am being poked with a fork.
Crash Tested
I bought this helmet last summer and I do have to agree with some of the people on here. The helmet would sometimes get snagged on my hair and that was annoying. But most importantly, this helmet saved my noggin during a bad crash. I went over the handle bars landed on my shoulder and head pretty hard. I ended up breaking my clavicle (sc joint) and had to go to ER; now 2 surgeries later, I’m on the road to recovery. I got rattled hard and I was surprised I didn’t end up with a concussion either.. Anyway, I’m glad I got this helmet. It did it’s job and looked good and while doing so. I’d highly recommend it.
Crashed, it did its job
Did its job when it mattered The thing about buying helmet supposed to other outdoor gear is it’s hard to get much real world information on protection. Fell the hardest I have in a long time directly onto this guy, helmet was toast, hit a rock, but my brain was fine so. Can’t say enough good things. Also quite breathable
Saved me
comfortable helmet and did what it was supposed to do. landed on my side and head from a bad spill on some boulders and the helmet did its job. no concussion! highly recommend.
Love it and it protected me today.
Went OTB today and smacked the right side of my head. The honeycomb material crumpled similar to the picture posted above. I am fine, but definitely would not have been. I find it perfectly comfortable, (went with size medium…my Giro Chronicle was a L) and the airflow is night and day better than my last helmet. I like the adjustable visor, too. I push it up for steep climbing to allow for better uphill vision, etc. May or may not buy the same one again, as it is on the expensive side. But, yeah it certainly did its job today, and I’m thankful for it.
Missing pieces?
Love this helmet but there is no covers on the MIPS connectors. Pulls your hair out if you have long hair. Most other helmets have covers to keep from getting tangled in your hair. So if they add covers for the MIPS attatch points.. Id give it a 5 star. 1st pic shows helmet with MIPS cover 2nd pic shows how no cover pulls out your hair. Please put covers on all MIPS helmet. Pleaee send me some covers
very uncomfortable design
The front of the helmet that interfaces with the forehead is not one continuous piece across the skull, rather is has two vertical sections that (for me) create two pressure points on my forehead. After a short ride there are two red vertical lines on my head and a slight indentation on my skin. There is little or no padding toward the rear of the helmet and the plastic piece that tightens has no padding at all and also is very uncomrfotable. It has a very open design which does allow plenty of airflow through at risk of sunburn towards the front of the head. Otherwise this is a nice looking helmet, just not for me. Returning to REI.
I bought a session bike
I bought a session bike helmet for my wife. She took a bad fall and I believe this helmet saved her from a bad concussion. I contacted smith and they replaced the helmet under warranty with just a few pictures submitted. From accident to new helmet will be just over a week. Great service and standing by their products! Thank you Smith.
Looks great but...
Got this helmet in the matte tusk color because it looked so good and matches my bike. While wearing the first time for about an hour my temples started hurting because both sides of the plastic tightening device are connected at the temple area. Smith tries to counter this by making the padding a little thicker on that section. Tried loosening it to the point of relief but then felt it wasn't snug enough to stay on if I were to take a spill. It is also a bit of a concern that there isn't any padding in the back. I hope I can get used to it because it was a bit pricey and I really love the look and style.
