good choice
It is very useful when I go to the big mountain.
New Favorite Hat
Love this hat! Wanted something lightweight that would shade my face and ears, and also the back of my neck without having that back-of-hat-bump thing when you're carrying a tall pack. This hat is perfect as it lays flat in the back. I have a child-size head and can never find 'adult' hats that fit me but this one actually works! Very comfy on a hot day doing 14 miles. Barely knew I was wearing it! Have yet to wear it in the rain though.
NOT WATERPROOF
Not waterproof at all. I wish it was a way to return it or exchange for a real waterproof hat
fantastic coverage
got this hat last minute before a trip to Denali. while we don't like last-minute planning, we DO like the emergency purchases that sometimes come out of it. I wouldn't have purchased this hat if I'd planned earlier, because I don't like buying things that feel like hyper-specialized gear. However, the desperation of a rainy forecast pushed me into this purchase, and now I really love this hat. The brim shape allowed for wide vision and the cape comfortably covered my neck. This allowed rain to roll onto my daypack rain cover instead of my shirt. Now I believe that rain gear, while it could be considered specialized, is less so frivolous spending and more so trip-saving messiah material.
I love this hat
Just bought it last week and wore it to the desert this past weekend and it was great. Very comfortable, doesn't pinch your head, and the neck cape is wonderful. I was concerned when I was looking at it in the store because the merchandising tags (nor Sunday Afternoons website) indicates that it has UPF protection. The REI website tho does show a UPF rating of 50 and they assured me that they get their specs directly from Sunday Afternoons. I just confirmed with customer service at Sunday Afternoons that the hat is indeed UPF50 rated so buy with confidence for sun or rain use.
Not the same as Cloudburst Rain Hat
Don't remember when I bought, 10+ years ago(?) the original "Cloudburst Rain Hat", but it served me well until it didn't - no longer rain proof. This hat is barely doable as what happened to the really long neck flap? And the slide on the chin strap? This new one is not an easy adjustment. But! I will say the front brim design is a nice improvement. The material construction is way lighter then the old Cloudburst, but guessing that is due to advancements in materials. I've been out in a decent downpour- no wind - for about 45 minutes. And yes it kept my head dry. So, yes I will keep and wear it as there really isn't a better option out there. If I lose it or wear it out, yeah I'll buy another one. Recommendation: Coming from a "Cloudburst Hat" I think you'll be disappointed. But as a first time buyer I think you'll really like it.
Perfect rain hat!!!
It is PERFECT! Tired of hats attached to coats. They block your peripheral vision and don't hold tight. This allows me to see around while I walk in the woods, keeps the rain off my neck and routes it down my back. There is an adjustment in the back so that you can customize the fit and it holds perfectly in place. I can't believe I have walked my dog in the rain for years without this!
Not at all waterproof!
Bought this to wear to a rainy football game. My head was wet after the first quarter, rain was wicking in through the seams in front then finally soaked the entire thing. It's being returned, very disappointed in the performance and especially at this price.
Good purchase
Husband bought this for fishing/boating. It provides real decent shade around front and sides of face from sunburn on the water, and the cape in back is perfect for neck protection without being too long. He has a larger than average head and it fit at the max adjustment, sorry not sure of his actual hat size. The chin strap works great in wind and can be secured to fit situation without being irritating or uncomfortable. It also looks nice on him.
Has Pros, Has Cons
I bought the Mineral color in a Medium (I'm 5'2", 130lbs for reference). I wish it were a more vibrant blue, but it's dull and should "go" with more outfits. I've used it in the windy dessert for sun protection and it does its job. I strongly dislike the swishy sound it makes, but I'm sound sensitive. I wish it had the two pockets on the side for sunglasses, but mine seem to stay put alright. There is no ventilation as it is meant to keep out water, but they could have used mesh with a flap for air flow. The chin strap is perfect; it has a weight at the bottom of the cord and the bead to adjust tightness is strong and capable. I don't feel chocked nor think the hat will fly off. The brim was a little wider than I'd like, but that only adds to the sun protection. It does fold, but it wouldn't fit into the average women's pant pocket. Overall, I would recommend this hat.
