I needed a bag tough
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I needed a bag tough enough for air travel to Svalbard, Norway. Big enough to hold 2 1/2 weeks of clothing and gear. Collapsible so it could be easily stored on a sailboat. This bag delivered. Added bonuses included bright orange color on the inside which made identifying contents much easier…straps that allow it to be carried on your back…and ease to use a lock on zipper mechanism to discourage easy pilfering when the bag is out of sight. It’s a great duffel. Also proved to be pretty waterproof when traveling back and forth to the family cabin in northern Minnesota….which is on an island…and frequently involves rain. No one likes wet gear……
Bombproof with a few functionality quirks
So far I've used my duffle for holiday travel from the east coast to WY and back. Super convenient having the backpack carry option, and not having to worry about your bag blowing up on the tarmac. I was also impressed with the storage capacity as I was easily able to fit my snowboard boots on top of what I thought was an already full bag. That said, the bag is a bit awkward to open in part due to the thick flap the overlays the zipper and the positioning of the shoulder strap when set up to carry like a backpack. I think the material will soften a bit with time making the easier to work with, but the shoulder straps are where they are.
How to imimprove what could be an industry leader
I used this on a wilderness trip with mixed results. Great if there is no rain. Not so good with rain. Attractive price point. Excellent construction, robust material zipper and seam construction, easy access, high visibility orange, excellent straps and carrying options. LEAKS in light rain, UTTERLY SOAKED in moderate rain. Pack went back to seller with no problem. Sea to sky responded reasonably and in a timely manner. Add taped seams, and and a waterproof zipper and you have an industry leader as the best cooler pack on the market even at a higher price! Let me know if you ever do this and I will gladly try one out!
A burden bag for traveling -- rough/hard/heavy ---
I needed this for traveling -- but the bag itself weighs a lot on its own, the material is super hard and a chore to manipulate. The bag just felt like it was hardened to be rugged...which makes good sense for keeping in the car and throwing around camp without worry. But I went with the Osprey Transporter instead for these reasons: 40L feels like you can fit much more than you think -- soft fabric -- single opening (one flap with no extra zippers floating all over the place) -- unobtrusive handles that hideaway on every side of the bag unlike this Sea to Summit bag - and very soft, easy to use backpack straps.
Great bag, not so great straps and handles.
Awesome construction quality and materials. This bag takes a beating like a champ. Perfect carry-on size, if you're not a hoarder. The reason for the 3 star rating? The shoulder straps are too short. In backpack mode, even fully extended, I'm playing fat-guy-little-coat to get the pack on. Also, using the backpack straps as regular duffel bag handles seemed like a good idea but fails in practice. The magnets are cute, but fairly useless. The straps do not fit comfortably in the hand in duffel mode. Fix the straps and I buy another! Otherwise, I'll suck it up for a while to see if I can get over it.
Grab and Go bag to go far far away
I needed a "grab n' go" extended weekend travel bag and this fit my criteria: durable and orange. Color is almost as important as the function for me. this bag is pretty lightweight for how rugged it is. the backpack shoulder straps are comfortable enough for urban hiking, the waterproofing proved itself in Ireland's non-stop spring storms. 45 liter is small enough to fit under an airplane seat and big enough for 4+ days of stuff, I was surprised by how much stuff I could cram into the bag. perfect carry on or touring pack. but then again, I'm a small-ish person and pretty low maintenance.
This is a perfect bag
This is a perfect bag for me. I purchased the 45L for clothes and hygiene products when I car camp. My 90 holds tent, pad, sleeping bag, cot, cooking gear, chair, jacket. Great for camping, motorcycle trips, boating or traveling! Durable, quality product.
Zipper is terribly designed
I've used this bag a total of three times, the zipper is very poorly designed. The Zipper stays pull off of the zipper itself when trying to close the bag, and when you do get the zipper to pull, using two hands very carefully, the zipper seam itself will split open behind it. I brought this up with warranty and they stated it's designed for rugged use. Apparently sitting under a cabin bunk with my daughter or the back of a car or on a deck of a boat for 1 hr before sitting on another cabin floor is too harsh an environment for this supposed "rugged use". A good warranty service would at least offer to look at the zipper and fix or replace it, but the terrible design would only cause it to malfunction again.
Excellent quality.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Perfect size to what I need for my gear. I love the color and excellent built quality. Took this bag on my Havasupai Trip and my overland trips.
My favorite duffle bags
I'm a big fan of these bags. I use two of them: a small one for day-to-day gear carrying, the large one for travel. I like the rugged fabric on these bags, the comfortable wide straps, the ability to setup the straps as handles, backpacking style, or duffel bag style, the locking zipper, and the no-nonsense simplicity of the bag. There's a single large compartment with a zippered pocket on the inside cover. No pockets on the outside which makes this bag more secure. I used the large bag for my round-the-world travels. It has held up well. Highly recommended
