great value for a good pedal
This is my 3rd pair of crankbros pedals. I have original eggbeaters and doubleshot 2s on my road whips and have thousands of miles on those pedals with zero issues Went with the candy 1 for the new mountain whip. I like the weight vs. economy value of this pedal. Good online reviews combined with my personal experience with the eggbeaters and doubleshot 2s made this purchase easy...plus my shoes are already set up for this rig. Good stable platform feels secure. So far I've used the candy 1s on Boise foothills trails: Shane's loop and 3bears and at Bogus Basin's Berm Baby Berm and Morning Star. So far so good...as expected.
Gravel bike Candy
Lightweight, look good and easy to clip in and out of. Crankbrothers makes bombproof products. Work great on my gravel bike!
Odd economizing
The instructions for mounting the clips on shoes are elaborate, and include a template. The instructions clearly state that, depending on the depth of the clip attachment area on your shoe, 0, 1 or 2 shims are needed for proper fit and function. The template said my shoes required 2 shims per shoe. The number included with the pedals? 2 in total. So, to get the additional 2 shims required a call to the manufacturer, a discussion with a not particularly helpful person who acknowledged this wasn’t a mistake, but just how they do things. Two additional shims where sent in the post and arrived about a week later. To be clear, these shims are plastic, maybe 3/8 x 5/8 inches and perhaps 1/16 inch thick. They weigh almost nothing and cost maybe a few pennies to produce. I bought these pedals clips and shoes at the same time from REI based on a recommendation from a staff member. This is not a huge problem and for me; just a nuisance. But if I planned to use them for an imminent vacation, event, or outing I would have been out of luck. So, an odd decision by the manufacturer and not the best product knowledge on the part of REI.
Pedal review
When I started using clipless pedals in 2009, I started with Shimano off road pedals. REI don't stock the Shimano SPD M540, so I bought the crankbrother Candy 1, and I gave up after one of practice, I didn't even try them on the road because I couldn't easily clip the shoes on and off. So I ordered the SPD M540 using the same shoes Izumi tour road cycling, I was ready to hit the road without any practice. Now I am not saying the Crankbrother pedals are bad, it just didn't work for me and I am not sure why.
Very poor quality
These are not what they used to be, went through two pairs of pedals in three months. The quality is very poor and has gone way down hill compared to their old product.
Known quality at an affordable price
I was simply looking for one of the cheapest replacements I could find of known quality for the crankbrother's Eggbeater pedals I had on a bike that I was converting to an indoor trainer. This pedal set fit that, and in some ways is even better than the more expensive pedal set I got for my mountain bike.
A clipless pedal that works will on my commute
I love how easy it’s been to learn to ride clipless with the Candy pedal, there’s enough of a platform I haven’t had any hot spots with my cheap shoes. I’m a little concerned about how long they will last but if they wear out in a few k more miles I’ll upgrade to the Candy 3
Solid Pedals, good price.
Solid pedals, this is my 4th set of Crankbrothers pedals. So far so good-- I'll stick with them. Use these on my gravel bike-- solid value for the price.
