THIS LOCK SAVED MY BIKE
I keep my bike outside at the apartment complex I live at, and someone attempted to steal it. The cable was cut, but the lock itself was strong enough or took long enough that my bike was luckily not stolen. Besides some small damage to the back brakes, my bike is still all there. I called up Kryptonite and they said that I can keep my same anti-theft protection offer as long as I let them know the ID of my new lock. I would definitely recommend this lock and Kryptonite for being so helpful!
Very secure, but bike mount is flimsy
I bought this lock and cable with a new bike at REI and after three weeks I decided just to carry it in my backpack. The key lock is easy to operate, and the instructions gave good ideas like looping the cable through the front tire and itself so you have enough length just attach one end to the U bar works well, What doesn't work well is the flimsy strap holder that lets you carry it on the bike...it keeps sliding down the post, it rattles cause the lock to tap the frame in syncopation with your peddling. They really need to come up with something like a water bottle screw mount holder for this thing, because it's a little heavy to carry in your backpack all the time.
good lock, noisy mount
the lock itself seems good and the cable helps locking the front wheel & locking to thicker racks or racks that only reaches the wheels. the only issue i have is the rattling mount. bought a huldit u-lock holder (https://www.rei.com/product/153816) instead of using the mount.
Good Combo. If having issues read below.
I just bought this lock, noticed beforehand people are having issues locking and unlocking. After having this happen at home multiple times while locking and unlocking, I found that there are two rubber ring bumpers at the base where the lock meets the "U." In my case the black side of the lock did not have enough room to accommodate the bumper and would prevent locking and unlocking. I removed the bumper and had no issues, I then cut the bumper by about half the thickness and have not had issues. Your mileage may vary
Poor quality, Keys break off key ring easily
I haven't even had a chance to use this lock yet and the key is already broken just from carrying it around on my keychain. Why would they design this in such a way that this is even possible? I'm lucky this happened at home otherwise I would have lost the key. They provide you two keys, but this shouldn't be happening. If they made these things completely out of metal like they did in the past this wouldn't have happened. The lock and cable themselves seem sturdy enough but compared to my old hand-me-down kryptolok they have really downgraded in quality. The only reason I bought this thing was because I lost the key and they no longer replace keys from old cylinder-style tumbler locks.
Register & sign up for the guarantee
No lock is theft-proof. Someone sliced through mine with an industrial saw and stole my bike in minutes. But happy ending - I had signed up for the antitheft guarantee and Kryptonite reimbursed me for the original purchase price of my bike. My advice, buy a Kryptonite that qualifies for the guarantee, register, and read the terms to make sure you can properly file a claim.
Lock won’t release
I read the reviews, tips, and tricks regarding the cylinder becoming misaligned and not releasing and figured, I won’t be “that guy”. Well, I’m that guy. I didn’t even get to use the lock. I followed instructions and inserted the key completely before turning and the cylinder still managed to jam up. I used a flat head screwdriver to try and fix it but the key just won’t release the lock. I’m just glad it happened at home and not while locked to a rack in the city.
Easily Cut
Second time buying one of these locks, second time having it easily broken and an expensive bike stolen.
Comes with a stolen bike buyback
This is a great lock. It has a key, the cable can wrap around to further secure the bike besides the U-lock. And, if you use it correctly and purchase the super inexpensive insurance, they will replace your bike if it's stolen.
Never wants to unlock
Every single time I lock-up my bike, I have to look like a fool for 45 minutes fighting with the key to unlock it. I don't know why it never wants to unlock smoothly; I guess I feel safe knowing no one will take off with my bike...including me.
