This jacket is fantastic. I love the color (purple/eggplant) and the fabric. I wore it for a week during constant NW rain. I wore it walking and bike riding. I really liked that the fabric didn't feel like the usual rain coat. It was very breathable. I didn't get the usual wetness on the inside that I have gotten from other coats - especially when using it for bike riding. I liked the large outside pockets; handy for holding your phone or for just walking with your hands in your pockets. I also like the cuffs and the velcro that allows you to tighten up the cuffs around your wrists. All in all a great jacket.
This would be a great jacket if you only need to wear no more than a thin long sleeve shirt and thin hoodie underneath (summer somewhere, not in the PNW?)...like if you're planning to wear this in town and only stand around in it?! The shoulders are narrow and the sleeves are full with just that much underneath - I couldn't wear a thick fleece under this. The hips are also too narrow. I ordered a Medium, my usual size at 5'4", 125 lb, 38-39 hips. I need a jacket I can wear over more layers. Not sure if I'll exchange as the L is no longer available and the XL would be too big. Too bad as I love the color, features and light weight of this jacket.
The fit of this jacket is fantastic. I ordered my normal size - medium and was able to wear a heavy sweatshirt underneath with no issues. It also still looks great with a t-shirt, not too baggy. The wrists and zipper flap are velcro. Only time will tell how well the velcro will hold up. I was able to go hiking in 40 degree F with only a fleece layer underneath the jacket and I was surprisingly warm and comfortable, not too hot or cold. My only concern is the hood. The string to tighten the hood is behind your head and challenging to use when already out and about. When I tightened the hood the brim receded exposing more of my face to the rain. Minor concern, but I like to keep my glasses on and dry if possible.
Great lightweight jacket! I am usually between a M and a L and I actually got this in an XL which surprised me enough to want to write a review- the L fit well even with a sweatshirt underneath but was slightly narrow in the shoulders and slightly tighter at the hem than would be comfortable for hiking or biking. If I were using this as a city jacket I would have stayed with the L but the XL covers more of my backside and is looser for easier movement with layers underneath. I am 5’5, 155 and usually a size 10 so the XL surprised me- size up!
I really liked this jacket. We know it never rains in California but lucky for me I had this jacket and it did rain. I really love that it is soft and not stiff. Water didn't penetrate and kept me dry through my run. Love that the jacket is designed to breath which made it very comfortable after 5 miles. I also use this jacket for cool evening outings. Great to throw in a bag and go! The only down side is if you are a full figured women bump up the size by one. But overall I am very happy with this jacket.
I wore this jacket during a few weeks in February, in MN. One day was a rain/sleet mixture, and this coat worked well for keeping me dry--it eliminated that damp feeling that I can tend to get w/my winter down jacket. I did have a light down vest underneath it to stay warm (it was upper 20's/lower 30's), but again, this coat kept the warmth in and the dampness out. Then, I took it out to Keystone, CO and used it as a wind proof layer while skiing. (Had a wool base layer, fleece jacket, and this.) It was 28 degrees plus sunny, and I felt great with it. The mobility was better than I had expected, able to use my ski poles, etc. with it. I love how the hood covers my head really well, and the neck comes up high to protect me during windy times. I like the large side pockets, they are useful and also placed to make the coat more flattering over other brands.
I got this jacket in winter (I live in the Northeast), so it wasn't ideal weather for testing. However, I did find it to be very effective against wind and rain and even light snow. It covers your entire torso, which is great. The material didn't let a drop of moisture through, and the hood gave my head just the right amount of coverage. I felt well protected from the weather. It also added a few degrees of warmth. The front closure is very secure with zipper and velcro. The outer pockets are nice and big. I would have liked to have a couple of pockets on the inside - that's my only complaint. This will come in handy when I'm hiking in drizzle, and it's easily packed up to have on standby when rain is in the forecast. There's no question in my mind that this jacket is technically sound.
I really liked this jacket for a lot of reasons. The fabric has a nice feel to it, not as "crunchy" as many other waterproof fabrics...but it's still waterproof, even the pockets. I found the pockets to be easy to access with a pack on, and I could unzip them with one hand (zipping them back up usually needed 2 hands, though). The hood stayed put in moderate wind (gusts to 20mph-ish), and the structured brim didn't end up misshapen after being stuffed in a backpack or duffel bag for a while. The hood isn't helmet-compatible, but it's not advertised as such, so that didn't surprise me. the smaller size hood makes it stay put more effectively, I think. This jacket fit true to size, consistent with other Marmot products. The sizing isn't intended to allow heavy layers underneath, but wearing my regular size allowed a midweight middle layer such as a light puffy or fleece. The shoulders are a bit snug, which makes the jacket look sleek and appropriate for around-town wear. I gave this product 4 stars for a few reasons. Mainly, in a jacket made from a fabric billed as a "performance" element, it does not really stand up to high exertion activity. The fabric doesn't stretch much at all, which limits movement, especially with the snug shoulders. I also really missed any way to dump heat, such as pit zips. Since it's not large enough to be a layering piece for cold weather and lacks movement and venting features that would make it a high exertion or warmer weather piece, the utility is kind of limited to around-town or commuter rain jacket kind of use, which is great for many. It's just less than ideal for folks looking for a more versatile piece, because there's a bit of unrealized potential here!
This jacket definitely keeps me dry and fits great. The hood fits over my hair and the pockets are big. I really like the Velcro closures as well. The inner liner does stick to my skin when I'm sweaty, so best to wear a fabric layer underneath.
The good: The new breathable, waterproof and eco-friendly materials of this jacket have held up to their promise so far. The jacket kept me dry in moderately heavy showers and was comfortable to wear over a mid-layer in 40 degree temps. I appreciated that I neither felt overheated, nor did the wind seem to blow right through this jacket as it has for other breathable shells I've owned. On a warmer day the material initially felt a bit sticky when I put the jacket on after already being active and sweaty but within about 5 minutes of wearing it I was impressed with how well everything equilibrated. The fact that the jacket is manufactured using eco-friendly processes is also a plus. The cautions: I personally found the fit and details of this jacket to be a bit odd in a few places. The collar of the jacket, when fully zipped, comes up so high that it not only completely covered my mouth but the majority of my nose as well. The hood worked pretty well but it felt a little bit shallow at times and as though it wanted to slip back (it never actually did). Finding a fit I liked with only one point of adjustment was a bit challenging and tended to pull the collar material directly against my nose and mouth which was uncomfortable for hiking/jogging. In more extreme conditions, having only my eye area exposed may be a benefit but for every day use it is not my preference. The jacket itself hit mid-hip but did not seem to be cut quite full enough to accommodate that length. Sleeves and shoulders fit great but it would have been nice for the jacket to either be cut short enough to hit above the hip or full enough at the hem so that it didn't continually bunch up through the central torso when moving and wearing a pack. Those with longer torsos or a straighter build through the hip region would be fine in this jacket.
