Smart 1.0 owner for 7 years
I have owned and used the first Smart for the past 7 years as my only belay device (with the exception of multi pitch due to repelling). It has been the best device I have ever used. When the 2.0 came out, I didn't even hesitate on getting it. They have improved on lowering. The first version takes a little practice to lower without jerking. With the 2.0, lowering is smooth even for first time users. I would highly recommend this device for anyone looking for a auto locking device. I pretty much refuse to use any other device. Specially for lead belaying. Its the best device to not short rope someone on lead.
So Simple!
I bought this last month and I am so happy I did! I have always used ATC devices up until this point and I wanted something that would be similar muscle memory. I can’t emphasize how simple this was to use. My wife has always been concerned with belaying for a larger climber. She fell in love with this due to how easily it locks on a fall. We tried some test falls, and even without attempting to brake on the rope, it was immediately locking on its own. The release for descending is also extremely smooth. I’m not one that has ever paid attention to weight of my climbing gear but for anyone that is, this thing is super light! I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it if I had to do it all over again.
Great device for new climber
I only went climbing once with my son's Boy Scout Troop and really enjoyed it. Got my own harness and investigated belay devices a bit. While twice as much as an ATC-XP, the assisted braking and simple construction really attracted me to this device. After taking it out to the gym, getting belay certified and belaying for my son and some adult friends, I can't speak highly enough about the Smart 2.0. It's super easy to use, smooth and really inspires confidence even in a brand new climber/belayer. It's a great value and IMHO does everything a Grigri would do at more than half the price and with no moving parts.
Narrow Focus, But Fantastic Execution
The Mammut Smart 2.0 is a solid little piece of kit - It's relatively light (not the lightest, but whatever), it feeds really well when lead belaying, it has good holding power for falls and takes, and it's blindingly simple. Everything that it does, it does well, and I really struggle to find any faults with it. If it has any, it's that it isn't a "do-it-all" device. You can't rappel on it, it only works with single ropes, blah, blah blah. It's inexpensive, much more comfortable than other assisted brake devices that I've used, and feels bombproof. I bought it because one of the local gyms requires an assisted catch device for lead climbing, and it works stellar for exactly that. Way to go, Mammut - kudos for a great product.
Good for top rope, leading, extra security
Appreciate the extra security of the autoblock without all the high tech mechanism and extra weight of the Gris Gris or Revo. Intuitive, great for top roping, took a little getting used to for leading to not short rope climber but quickly got muscle memory to pay out rope (easier than gris gris for me). High quality, as expected from Mammut. Fits ropes 8.7 to 10.5 mm. There's also two Alpine (think ice) versions that in addition accommodate thin ropes, half ropes and allows for independent belay for second climber(s). Weighs 2.8 oz (80g).
Super smooth & super simple assisted belay device!
I have used a Smart Alpine for a while and recently got a Smart 2.0. It is smoother and easier to feed rope out for a leader and super easy to control when lowering a climber. Despite being easier to lower and feed rope out, this improved smoothness does not sacrifice the security of assisted braking. It still helps you catch a fall and smoothly and effortlessly helps me be a much better belayer. Awesome device and an improvement over the previous version. I can't wait for the Smart 2.0 Alpine!
Very pleased!
I'm a smaller climber, and my partners tend to be about 50 lb heavier than me. It's very intuitive to use and locks quickly and easily, which makes me feel much more confident when I belay my partner! I don't have to exert as much energy when holding my partner if they need to rest. It was a little jerky when I first used it for lowering, but found a good rhythm shortly with practice. Highly recommend and it's at a good price point compared to others
Standard for belay devices
My son started sport climbing so got this, previously using a Black Diamond ATC which is more for general alpine climbing. I wanted a little "help" as he was trying more and more challenging routes. The "assist" is significant, surprisingly so. Takes a little bit of time to get use to giving slack (5 minutes practicing at home), but adjusted very quickly. Lowering is a little awkward, but works. I am sure will get smoother with that. Realistically, that is not really why you are buying it, it is an assisted belay device and for that it works perfectly. Very simple, which is key for climbing gear, and IMO better than more expensive mechanical options. I believe it is the standard for sport belay devices.
Perfect Belay Device
Love this belay device. It's a simple, bomber piece of equipment and extremely reliable. This action works essentially the same as the black diamond ATC pilot device but I like it a bit more personally as the handle is longer, not taller, which fits more ergonomically in my hand. Lowers have been smooth and the assisted braking is always a boon for newcomers! Extremely easy feed for lead belaying as well. This is my second Mammut Smart after losing the original and I love it even more.
Great Belay Device for larger hands
I started climbing about 8 months ago and while I enjoy bouldering, I’ve not too roped much. I had a simple belay device that came bundled with my harness, but it didn’t do much to keep my family safe while climbing. I tried my wife’s BD ATC belay device and it felt nice, but my thumb kept jamming into the device when lowering… it hurt. I don’t have that problem with this device. It fits my hands great and I can lower my wife and 8 y/o son without any issues!
