Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Either I got a lemon or there is a structural issue: the toe on the right shoe starts wearing off and a whole appears.
First, to clarify, I do NOT have a wide foot...my foot is smack dab in the middle of the normal range. But I do feel like most running shoes crunch my toes together so much that it is not a comfortable fit. Recently I took a liking to Hoka's, and to be honest I didn't think that I'd ever find a pair of running shoes that were either more comfortable or less attractive than the Hoka's, but these shoes are both! The look is odd...but I'm a 50 something confident person and really don't care...the fit, however, was incredible. I would rate this shoe very high for both cushioning and for comfort. I'm not a super technical runner...just want good comfort and cushion and I'm happy.
While I agree with most of the reviews on this product in terms of comfort, this shoe is not designed to last. I have run less than 200 miles and the tread is already worn completely flat. Additionally, I have not been able to find socks that don't cause my foot to slide all over the place in these shoes. I have cinched the laces down so tight they are nearly cutting off circulation and my toes are right at the end of the shoe, so I do not have too large of a size and I cannot get a fit where my foot stays put. This causes blisters and injuries. They are very comfortable yes, but they don't last long and the insides are too slippery.
I've been wearing and enjoying low drop, natural style shoes for the past six months or so. Saucony Kinvara 7 and Nike Free RN Distance 2 being my other sets that i wear. Picked up the Altra Escalante's as the zero drop as well as the underlying philosophy piqued my interest. So far I've used them for four runs, 44 miles in total, including the Orca Half Marathon in West Seattle. Felt really solid throughout, probably my favorite pair of shoes now.
I've been running for 23 years and this is my favorite shoe after one day of use (probably an overreaction, but hey). I have a narrow foot and I still felt the rear and middle of the shoe had enough lock down, which is surprising coming from Nike shoes in the past that admittedly have a superior lockdown. I've seen posts that said the Escalante did not have enough, which seems plausible given the design, but that was not the case for my foot. I love the midsole and the knit. I would appreciate a bit more breathability in the upper, particularly near the toes. Overall, I wouldn't trade these for another shoe. They fit my needs perfectly. I run at most 25 miles a week. Looking forward to using these over the long haul.
I'm a daily runner that needed and liked minimalist shoes. Anything with a lot of support I would get plantar fasciitus with so I ran in Nike Free Runs for years, but I felt like I needed more cushioning for longer runs. After some online research, I checked these out. I was turned off a bit to be honest by the wide toe box and the shoes looked kind of weird at first to my eyes, but they perform. The do exactly what I was looking for. Minimalist, light weight, with good cushioning.
These shoes are comfortable and really soft at impact, which is great for road running. But they fit slightly differently than all the other Altras I have ever owned. Usually with Altras, its the sizing, but not the case here. In the Escalante, my feet tend to get smooshed up against the outside and front of the shoe. This could be due to years of running in narrower shoes, but it doesnt happen in Lone Peaks or Superiors. The Escalantes also seem to be unstable for me. If I try to do anything other than run in a straight line, they tend to want to flip over and I nearly turn my ankle. Someone with weaker ankles surely would twist their ankle.
All zero drop shoes can take a bit of time to get used to as you will work more of your ankle muscles. If you are a heel strike runner (and you shouldn’t be), your heels may hurt until you adapt to walking/running like you are barefoot. These shoes allow your feet to spread normally just like you are barefoot. These are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. They literally feel like you are always walking barefoot on soft grass. They’d also increased my top running speed.
Wish I could love this shoe. When I got them they were fantastic. The response great, cushioning great. Then they started stretching and now they are sloppy. Just forget trying a track workout. Now I just love the EGO sole but they upper just expands and expands. They are great for running straight ahead but impossible to run curves on a track. So buy them 1 size smaller than your regular Altra size. A friend did that now and they wer much better. I keep them for recovery runs but I got the Escalante Boston Racer. Finally my perfect shoe! Get the upper right on the Escalante (like the Racer) and you have a perfect allround shoe.
Excellent shoe- paid close attention to the recommendations of starting out with shorter distances to get used to the zero drop. Been ramping up and running quicker (without the intention) at my normal distances. Love the extra room in the toe box, but it is a little larger than your normal fit of a running shoe. Highly recommend- love the bouncy, but firm midsole.
