I bought these boots a couple weeks ago. I needed expedited shipping, and the boots were here in time for my trip out to Yosemite. I have very weak ankles and I have used these boots 5 times since I got them without any ankle incidents! So far, I have used these boots on trails, off trails, in the mud, in shallow running water, and in snow. My feet have stayed dry and I haven't lost my footing yet! I paired my purchase with some REI Merino wool crew socks, which I am certain adds to the comfort of the boots. I am actually considering purchasing another pair just in case when my current ones go out this style is discontinued! Very very happy customer!!
I bought these boots two years ago and they were comfortable right out of the box. Overall, I felt like they fit great (and I loved the purple laces and trim)! However, after two years of moderate hiking, they split at the toe box seams, and the front seal is peeling away. I saw that they were a closeout on in the Garage just now, so I bought another pair (since they're so comfortable). I'll try taking better care of this new pair (I'm pretty hard on my boots, so maybe that's why they're not holding up?).
I use these as work boots and love them so much I bought another pair for every day wear. I work construction and that can be either a year outside or a year inside on concrete all day. These perform excellent in all conditions. Often my inside jobs eat up a softer hiker sole very quickly and these seem to hold up well. I always use a cheap 2/3 length $10 heel/arch insert in my work boots and needed it in these too. I replace the inserts every 2 months ish. I have very low arches so I need that in all my shoes. I have had these about 8 months and still doing great, I'm not good about conditioning yhe leather and they still look good.
I bought these books back in march, and wore them for a few short hikes before I took them out in the big stuff. They weren't the most comfortable, but I figured they needed to be broken in some more. I took them out on the Lincoln-Lafayette loop, a 9 mile hike, and they were absolutely awful and so uncomfortable. They slipped on every rock, I was tripping over everything, and I consider myself an experienced hiker. The toe box is nice and big, but almost too big to where I couldn't tighten it down with the laces. The outer edge on the toe even started to peel off. They're such pretty boots! I love the leather! They just completely suck. And at least the Gore-Tex worked.
First hike in these was ~6 miles in mud season. That was 6 months ago & I've had no issues whatsoever since. This is my third pair of Merrells, and the fit (size 9) is consistent between the three. The toe box is spacious. With the laces cinched tight across the instep, my toes have wiggle room, but my feet don't slide around. This was a priority for me because I had some nasty toenail damage after a downhill slide in another pair of boots. If you need boots to protect your feet in rugged terrain, I highly recommend these (or whatever Merrell has replaced them with -- Moabs?)
I bought these shoes for a backpacking trip in Patagonia and also for the Appalachian trail. Had no difficulty breaking them in and they were very comfortable and fit great. Overall I would say good waterproof ability. The only time my feet got wet was when I walked through a waterfall with water dumping into the shoes. Otherwise questionable durability, the stitches near the toebox already started to split after only 60 miles in ChIle. Overall would recommend for routine backpacking trips in moderate terrain.
I bought these boots back in January and have been using them throughout the winter without any problems. The real test came last month when I took them along for hiking on the Salkantay Trek. These boots were wonderful across a range of terrains and conditions-- rocks, mud (lots of mud), water, etc. Long story short: they kept my feet dry and comfortable, and provided all the support my weary ankles needed. I'm a very happy customer! :)
I love these boots! + I have wider feet and the boot is perfect for that. + The sole is really sticky, which I appreciate a lot on wet ground, and the cushioning is very good. + So far no issues with the waterproofing, and I hiked for consecutive days in the rain, and also in deep snow. + Also, the leather stabilizer in around the ankle does a great job at keeping your ankle in place and I think it may have helped me, too, with my knee issues. - The only - aesthetic - drawback is that the leather used for this stabilizer gets scratched super easily. I guess you'll get your used/vintage/worn look after the first use.
I got these boots for long through hikes in Aussie..where we encountered some pretty tough terrain..these boot were wonderful kept my feet dry and blister free..and have great traction...love them so much I got two more pairs. Best for backpacking trips..I like a lighter boot for day hiking
I bought these a few months before a 5-week backpacking trip. Took a while to break them in, but that's to be expected with full-grain leather. I also bought bought superfeet insoles for these, as I was spending 5-12 hours every day hiking. That said, here's what I noticed: - I NEVER had achy feet even after hours of scrambling, high-altitude hiking, and steep inclines. The support these boots give is excellent! - Very waterproof (you can feel the temperature difference of the water that gets through the leather seams, but the gore-tex liner keeps you totally dry) - Comfortable laces that don't tear up your hands when you tighten them - Great traction - I walked over snow and loose rubble with no problem. Not so good: - I realize I really put these through the ringer, but by the end of my trip the toe guard was starting to come unglued, a seam by my toe coming undone, and the ankle support part was coming apart from the heel. - The toe guard doesn't have a low profile - it often got caught on various things - Scuffs are very noticable (not something I care about, but some folks do) Luckily, Merrell reimbursed me for the repairs I had done. I'll keep these because they're so well broken in and have such great support, but I imagine I'll have to keep getting them fixed as time goes on.
