good enough
Ask yourself, how into cycling is your son. This will not work if they are trying to keep up with Dad on trails. It must weigh 40lbs(guess) my son is 65 thats like me trying to ride a bike that weighs 100lbs. Not fun. Its good enough for the park, the neighborhood and the sidewalk. My son couldnt dhift or stop this bike at first but it has broken in and hes ok with both now. Good entry level bike but beyond that i gotta say step up and spend more..
Great Purchase
Staff were knowledgable, curtious and set up the bike in not time. Prior to purchasing this specific mountain bike I did alot of online and in store research on what would be the best bang for my buck. And while other top brands were appealing this Diamondback could not be beat, starting with the price and ultimately features.
Dangerous: Comes with Adult sized Brake Levers
My son has no chance of stopping this bike. So far, both REI and Diamondback have been useless about replacing them.
Not nearly the bike it should be.
My son was a picky shopper for this purchase. We saw this bike online and he was in love with the paint scheme. We went into and they didn't have it in stock, but we test rode the Co-op 20' bike. It's only $30 more. Well, my son had no interest in that one, despite feeling it was a great test ride. He's only 7 years old, but a very intense young man. :) He wanted the Diamond Back. We ordered it online and it came. We picked it up in Salem, and went for a 50 minute ride. He could NOT crank the shifter down to gears 1, 2 or 3 with his hand strength. I started inspecting it and notices that the crankshaft had the kind of friction I would expect of a Walmart bike - it was no good. My son was not getting the "low-friction, high speed" thrills he'd come to expect from his $180 Polpo (REI 16" bike) he'd had for a couple years - he was in tears after being so disappointed after shopping so hard. :) Admittedly, we didn't give it a good test ride at the store. Long story short - we returned it for the Co-Op 20" thing he'd ridden before and he loves it and decided the paint was to his liking also. :) If the Co-Op bike is $299, this Diamondback should be half of that, no joke. It's just not the same caliber of bike. The Co-Op is a GREAT bike and my son is in love with it.
Great Entry Level MTN Bike
After a lot of online browsing finally landed on the Octane 20" for a 7th birthday present for my son. He is right at 47", the bottom end recommendation for height on this bike. He is able to maneuver and shift pretty well but the only issue he is having are the brake levers. They are just a little too big for a bike this size. He is however getting used to them. Overall very happy with the product and workmanship. All parts match up with the price point and we are looking forward to some family shredding.
