I made the leap and bought a boot that would last and stand up to the punishment that I would put forth onto them. I’m glad I did. I’ve been wearing Salomons for a trail running sneaker for years now and decided to stick with the brand that has made me true believer. These boots are sturdy, comfortable and very well balanced. Not to mention I love the way they look. I would wear them to a fancy dinner if the parking lot wasn’t paved. Can’t say enough about them.
No break in required, light, waterproof lined in melty snow, sturdy heel with flexible toe. The tongue padding was great on descent slopes bombing over top of the snowy switchbacks with 40# pack. The heel was just as well for up's and no super feet inserts needed. Had to kick step for a couple hundred feet up and heel plant down after I broke a cheap pair of crampons on refreeze. no discomfort there. Hauled butt to the summit and sprinted the last 50 feet... 12 mile day first time out with 40 lbs. I tried them on in the store and went a full size up from my work boot size. I felt the heel of all the other "Mountaineering boots" and knew by certain these were the best on the shelf. You know its good when you don't want to take them off for the cashier.
Growing up in the great outdoors and then joining the Army, and still today adventuring every chance I get as an adult - I've gone through so many different brands and styles of boots. These are hands-down the BEST boots I've ever owned. I just spent the weekend camping through a pretty decent blizzard getting snow dumped on me for almost 12 hours nonstop and my feet stayed dry and warm. Quality socks definitely helped but I'm telling you, you won't be disappointed with these bad boys. Thanks Salomon!
I am very pleased with these boots! I manage a buffalo ranch. Cactus is everywhere. They have held up well. And I go through a lot of boots out here.
So comfortable! Felt fully broken in since the moment I put them on. Been wearing in the snow and are fairly warm keep my feet very dry. Can feel the quality, definitely recommend.
These boots did not survive the White Mountains. They are okay for flat terrain, but they are not durable enough for 4000 ft peaks.
I've had the XALP MID LTR GTX for several months now. The boots for true to size and are comfortable. The tounge took some breaking-in in the upper sections. There were pressure points that formed at first even on trips around town. Even still on longer hikes it can be bothersome. The lower lacing system is difficult to get snug with the punched leather holes. The edging chasis and sole work well and help climb when not on trails. The traction is great and what I've come to expect from Salomon products.
I'm 5'10 160 lbs, wear a 10.5 and I'm a runner, I wanted a pair of comfortable mid boots that I could take on a 4 day inca trail hike. I've heard great things about solomon boots so I decided to give these a try. The boots feel very solid and have a great design. I loved the way the laces latch in and give you a great way to customize your fit with the laces. Unfortunately the tongue of the boot seemed like it wasn't designed for comfort. I noticed the stitching on the web that holds the tongue to the boot had the knot tied on it right where it makes contact with your ankle. You would think that wouldn't be much of a problem but even with socks on it almost felt like I had a pebble stuck in the boot pressed up against my ankle. The sides of the tongue itself also seemed to rub against my ankles. I ended up returning the boots and buying a pair of Asolo Falcon GVs.
They walk great, good grip and ankle support. Throughout the first year I took these shoes to 4 different continents with environments ranging from -20 to +120. The main problem I found to be having was waterproofing. Currently being in the Dolomites in Italy, on an multi night trip, I never had dry feet. Wet grass soaks your toes. I had the same problem last winter in the grand titons and Yellowstone, hiking through the snow got my toes wet. I'll be looking at getting other shoes.
Really good boots, light and very supporting. However sizing is in the small side and they have quite a narrow fit. I’m normally 8-9 but I had to return the first pair in exchange for a 10. Quite costly as they are shipped from Germany.
