5 Trails to Add to Your Running Bucket List

Looking for a reason to head to Switzerland? We’ve got five.

Welcome to Ascona-Locarno, home to sweeping valleys, alpine lakes, and some of the best running trails in the world. In the short film 5 Trails to Run Before You Die, outdoor video production company Filme von Draussen showcases five of the top trails in the region. Add these to your bucket list.

1. Monte Gambarogno

Lake views and a low-alpine summit make up this 4.7-mile trail on the southern shore of Largo Maggiore. You’ll hit the trickiest ascent right in the beginning and enjoy a slow descent on your way back that makes for the perfect cool down. Just be sure to watch your step on the technical, rocky terrain.

2. Valle Verzasca

Sparkling green water, crashing waterfalls, and historic ruins. What else could you ask for on a 15-mile run? Enjoy landscapes of scenic villages and the Swiss countryside, but don’t forget to stop and check out the art installations along the trail.

3. Lago d’Efra

Make your way through miles of lush forest, crossing streams and passing waterfalls until you arrive at the remote Lake Efra. This trail is best traveled in the spring when the waterfalls are rushing and wildflowers are blooming.

4. Cimetta

Follow a steep and sometimes exposed path for eight miles along Locarno’s local mountain. Catch panoramas of the town, Lake Vogorno, and a 360-degree view of the Magadino Plain. Note: While most of this trail is runnable, be careful on the steeper, more exposed sections.

5. Robiei Trail

You haven’t experienced the alps until you’ve seen the Basòdino Glacier, and this 2.5-mile-long trail winds right along its side. After you’ve crushed the quick lakeshore run, head to Capanna Basòdino where you can snack on regional dishes and enjoy a well-deserved cold drink.
