REI SoHo Video: 5 Boroughs, 5 Projects

Something cool is going on in New York City.

As you might expect, the REI SoHo store's 150 new employees have been working tirelessly to train and prep the store for its official grand opening December 2 through 4 in the historic Puck Building.

What may be less expected (though is typical of REI store employees nationwide) is that the entire REI SoHo team recently put their outdoor values to work by volunteering in each of New York City's 5 boroughs. These projects allowed REI employees to give back directly to the communities where they and so many of their future customers call home.

The team volunteered in:
Gateway National Recreation Area (Staten Island)
Prospect Park (Brooklyn) with Prospect Park Alliance
Riverside Park (Manhattan) with Riverside Park Trust
Rockaway Beach (Queens) with Rockaway Waterfront Alliance
Shoelace Park (The Bronx) with Bronx River Alliance

Meet a few of our hardworking employee volunteers in the video below.

Our local community involvement actually began several years before securing our space in SoHo's Puck Building. In addition to the groups listed above, we have partnered this year alone with the following organizations through grants and/or event promotions: Central Park Conservancy, Friends of the High LineNew York/New Jersey Trail Conference, Recycle-A-Bicycle, Rocking the Boat, Hike the Heights, Alliance for Morris County Parks, CLIMB, Friends of Westchester County Parks, Groundwork Hudson Valley, Hackensack Riverkeeper, Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference and the New York Restoration Project.

Additionally, area REI employees could be found volunteering through Hands On New York Day in McGolrick Park, It's My Park! Day in Prospect Park and Central Park Conservancy's "Pitch In, Pick Up" program.

Our SoHo store has been pleased to join other Tri-State REI locations in extending our relationships with these amazing nonprofit groups and helping provide additional opportunities for New Yorkers to get into the outdoors.

Visit the REI Blog next week for a video update on the store's construction and to see how REI is honoring the Puck Building's rich legacy.
